Download or read book Swirling Flows and Flames written by Toufik Boushaki and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirl flows are used in a wide range of industrial applications. In non-reacting cases, examples of applications include vortex amplifiers and reactors, heat exchangers, jet pumps, and cyclone separators. In reacting cases, swirlers are widely used in combustion systems, such as gas turbines, industrial furnaces, boilers, gasoline and diesel engines, and many other practical heating devices. Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book Leading edge Electric Power Research

Download or read book Leading edge Electric Power Research written by Cian M. O'Sullivan and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new and significant research on electric power. The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks.

Book Effects of Streamline Curvature on Turbulent Flow

Download or read book Effects of Streamline Curvature on Turbulent Flow written by Peter Bradshaw and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Streamline curvature in the plane of the mean shear produces large changes in the turbulence structure of shear layers, usually an order of magnitude more important than normal pressure gradients and other terms in the mean-motion equations for curved flows. The effects on momentum and heat transfer in boundary layers are noticeable on typical wing sections and are very important on highly-cambered turbomachine blades: turbulence may be nearly eliminated on highly-convex surfaces, while on highly-concave surfaces momentum transfer by quasi-steady longitudinal vortices dominates the ordinary turbulence processes. The greatly enhanced mixing rates of swirling jets and the characteristic non-turbulent cores of trailing vortices are also consequences of the effects of streamline curvature on the turbulence structure. A progress report, comprises a review of current knowledge, a discussion of methods of predicting curvature effects, and a presentation of principles for the guidance of future workers.

Book CFD Applications in Nuclear Engineering

Download or read book CFD Applications in Nuclear Engineering written by Wenxi Tian and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High fidelity nuclear reactor thermal hydraulic simulations are a hot research topic in the development of nuclear engineering technology. The three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Multi-phase Fluid Dynamics (CMFD) methods have attracted significant attention in predicting single-phase and multi-phase flows under steady-state or transient scenarios in the field of nuclear reactor engineering. Compared with three-dimensional thermal hydraulic methods, the traditional one-dimensional system analysis method contains inherent defects in the required accuracy and spatial resolution for a number of important nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulic phenomena. At present the CFD method has been widely adopted in the nuclear industry, across both light water reactors and liquid metal cooled fast reactors, providing an effective solution for complex issues of thermal hydraulic analysis. However, the CFD method employs empirical models for turbulence simulation, heat transfer, multi-phase interaction and chemical reactions. Such models must be validated before they can be used with confidence in nuclear reactor applications. In addition, user practice guidelines play a critical role in achieving reliable results from CFD simulations.
