Download or read book Swimbladder Allometry of Selected Midwater Fish Species written by Albert Brooks and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the relationship of fish standard length to swimbladder length, width, and volume. The intra- and inter-specific variation is studied in over 1600 selected mesopelagic fish specimens belonging to 55 species from 9 families. These species are believed to account for most of the volume reverberation occurring throughout a large part of the Sargasso Sea. Regression equations presented in the report allow calculation of swimbladder volumes directly from measurements of fish standard length for 55 species of midwater fish. Additional equations allow the calculation of swimbladder length and width from measurements of the standard lengths of these same species. It is shown that for 40 species, bladder volume increases with increasing standard length. Slopes of the regression lines for 14 species are shown to be insignificant from zero. For one species, bladder volume decreases slightly with increasing standard length. Results of the study demonstrate that equations currently in use overestimate the volumes of the swimbladders and thus acoustic cross sections of many midwater fish species.
Download or read book A Review of the World Resources of Mesopelagic Fish written by J. Gjøsaeter and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1980 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fish species can be called mesopelagic if it spends the day in the mesopelagic zone. The mesopelagic zone has been defined in different ways based on depth, temperature and light regimes. For the present purpose, depth seems to be the best criterion and mesopelagic fish can thus be defined as species generally spending the day at depths between approximately 200 and 1 000 m. Generally they perform a diel migration, coming to the upper 200 m or even to the surface during the night. The present report briefly reviews the systematics ecology and life history of important groups of mesopelagic fish. Further, some methods used for abundance estimation of these fish are described and discussed. The bulk of the report reviews the present knowledge of abundance and species composition of mesopelagic fish in each of the FAO statistical areas. Although the data in most cases are few, an attempt has been made to give tentative estimates of the biomass and production in the various areas. When available, information on the life history of the most important species in each area is also given.

Download or read book Ichthyology Handbook written by B.G. Kapoor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, progress in fish biology has advanced at an unprecedented rate and has led to many breakthroughs in the field. This book provides a wealth of information on the strategies that fish adopt with respect to waters with markedly different physical and chemical characteristics. It shows how their physiology, behaviour and lifestyles are adapted to exploit particular niches and gives comprehensive insight into fish life under extreme conditions. The readers are introduced to the ways in which fish exemplify many phenomena of general biological interest - the existence of competitors, chaos, and predator-prey interaction. Fish pathology as well as the components of the immune system are addressed. In this book, original and at times controversial views are presented, areas which have so far received inadequate attention are highlighted and avenues for further research are suggested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swimming is an integral part of the life history of many fish species as is intimately linked with their ability to express feeding and predator avoidance behaviors, habitat selection and environmental preferences, social and reproductive behaviors as well as migratory behaviors. Therefore, swimming is an important determinant factor of fitness in a true Darwinian sense and, not surprisingly, swimming performance has been often used as a measure of physiological fitness in fish. The main aim of this Research Topic is to showcase some of the current studies designed to improve our understanding of the physiological energetic and metabolic requirements of swimming and of the adaptive responses to swimming in fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most habitats, adaptations are the single most obvious aspects of an organism's phenotype. However, the most obvious feature of many subterranean animals are losses, not adaptations. Even Darwin saw subterranean animals as degenerates: examples of eyelessness and loss of structure in general. For him, the explanation was a straightforward Lamarc
