Tragedy strikes Sam and Becky. A bank robber holds a knife to Becky's throat as she struggles to escape. The robber's partner aims his gun, preparing to shoot at Becky. "No!" Sam shouts and hurls himself into position between the shooter and Becky. As Sam lay fighting for his life, Becky sobs, "I love you, Sam Wilson. I always have, I always will!" The word of mouth results, have been the product of years of experimentation done millenniums ago. When did grandma become the epitome of wisdom and experience? Well, we should go back millenniums, when it was the job of the oldest generation to take care of the youngest generation, while the adults generation in between went out to collect food, water and other basic necessities necessary for survival. The job of raising and training the children was left to those people who were most experienced. It is possibly this reason why the oldest and the youngest generations still find that they are more compatible and comfortable with each other, due to natural preference, instinctive selection and human psychological and social behavior. So the children of the tribe, group, gathering, and city were put in charge of the elders, who used to talk to them about their ancient traditions, talk to them by their own grandparents. The rules and regulations of living in society and getting to know one’s own place in the hierarchy of a tribe was thus transmitted from generation to generation through these elders. Grandpa trained the kids with tribal knowledge and physical exercise. Grandma was in charge of their overall emotional, spiritual and physical well-being. She was responsible for their health, well-being, food and other essential things necessary to keep children healthy and well-balanced members of the family and later on the tribe. …and that caring instinct still is present… That is why the matriarch – mother – was given the job of passing on the herbal knowledge to the girls in the family, preparing them to be future matriarchs taking care of their own families, as years went by. The boys were trained into becoming warriors, teachers, farmers, food gatherers or in other professions by the males of the tribe. So the lines were demarcated out very clearly in well-regulated times since ancient days. The house, home and hearth and other duties pertaining to a domestic nature was under the jurisdiction of the females. The land, the preservation, cultivation and protection of the area around it was under the jurisdiction of the males. So it was the man’s prerogative to be the hunter and the warrior, to feed and protect his family and tribe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Small Spaces, Doll Bones, and Mary Downing Hahn, a truly chilling (and historically inspired) ghost story from the talented author of The Forgotten Girl. Celeste knows she should be excited to spend two weeks at her grandparents' lake house with her brother, Owen, and their cousins Capri and Daisy, but she's not. Bugs, bad cell reception, and the dark waters of the lake... no thanks. On top of that, she just failed her swim test and hates being in the water—it's terrifying. But her grandparents are strong believers in their family knowing how to swim, especially having grown up during a time of segregation at public pools. And soon strange things start happening—the sound of footsteps overhead late at night. A flickering light in the attic window. And Celete's cousins start accusing her of pranking them when she's been no where near them! Things at the old house only get spookier until one evening when Celeste looks in the steamy mirror after a shower and sees her face, but twisted, different... Who is the girl in the mirror? And what does she want? Past and present mingle in this spine-tingling ghost story by award-winning author India Hill Brown.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of poems written on napkins and in notebooks. In a way, the poems wrote themselves. The poems were written as a way of maintaining my mental balance and as a means of exercising frustrated desires. I have indulged myself in considering loves lost. Then I would amuse myself with a poem or two written in a humorous vein. Some poems are dark, and others are lighthearted. It is hoped that the enclosed poems will provide the same mood-changing service for the reader as they have provided to your author.

  • Publisher : Hawthorne Books

  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book Core written by Kassten Alonso and published by Hawthorne Books. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS INTENSE AND COMPACT NOVEL crackles with obsession, betrayal, and madness, and was an Oregon Book Award Finalist for fiction 2005. As the narrator becomes fixated on his best friend’s girlfriend, his precarious hold on sanity rapidly deteriorates into delusion and violence. This story can be read as the classic myth of Hades and Persephone (Core) rewritten for a twenty-first century audience as well as a dark, foreboding tale of unrequited love and loneliness. Alonso skillfully uses language to imitate memory and psychosis, putting the reader squarely inside the narrator’s head. In addition, deliberate misuse of standard punctuation blurs the distinction between the narrator’s internal and external worlds. A sense of alienation and Faulknerian grotesquerie permeate this landscape where desire is borne in the bloom of a daffodil and sanity lies toppled like an applecart in the mud.
