Book excerpt: Dating! Drama! Driving! Remember what it was like to be sixteen? Whether it was the year your teeth were finally free of braces or the year you were discovered by the opposite sex, that magical, mystical age is something you will never forget. Edited by Megan McCafferty, author of the runaway hit novels Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings, Sixteen: Stories About That Sweet and Bitter Birthday is a compilation of short stories inspired by all the angst, melodrama, and wonderment of being sixteen. Sarah Dessen’s “Infinity” is about a girl confronting two major milestones: getting her driver’s license and losing her virginity. The Dead Girls in Jacqueline Woodson’s “Nebraska 99” have already decided to “do it” and must now cope with being teenage mothers. And Carolyn Mackler’s “Mona Lisa, Jesus, Chad, and Me” explores whether friendship can survive when partying and prayer clash. Also included is a new Jessica Darling story by Megan McCafferty about the last fifteen minutes Jessica spends—or rather, doesn’t spend—with her best friend, Hope, who is leaving Pineville. Featuring stories by Steve Almond, M. T. Anderson, Julianna Baggott, Cat Bauer, Emma Forrest, Tanuja Desai Hidier, David Levithan, Sonya Sones, Zoe Trope, Ned Vizzini, and Joseph Weisberg, these hilarious, poignant, and touching tales are perfect for both those who have yet to reach that milestone and those who want to reminisce about their “sweetest” year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1904, sixteen women travelled together by train to cover the St Louis World's Fair. The Sweet Sixteen traces the fateful ten-day trip that resulted in the formation of a professional club for the advancement of Canadian newspaper women. Drawing upon letters, journals, interviews, and most significantly, newspaper stories written by the women themselves, Linda Kay narrates the journey to St Louis with evocative detail. Delving into the group dynamics and individual experiences of these women, Kay explores the cultural divide between the Anglophone and Francophone members of the group and provides compelling biographical sketches of each woman's life and work. The Sweet Sixteen documents the struggles of a group of tenacious and talented women who, in 1904, did not have the right to vote, were not regarded as persons under the law, and were credentialed as journalists at a time when marriage and motherhood were considered a woman's one true calling. Their legacy -the Canadian Women's Press Club - is a testament to their daring.

Book excerpt: Reba was a wonderful mother. After her husband died she had raised her five children with her limited resources and some help from her sister and brother-in-law who were childless. When the youngest child was nine years old she saw her mother murdered. Three men raped and murdered her mother. All three of the men were prominent citizens. One of them was even the sheriff. When they realized the woman was dead the men sobered up. They agreed it had been an accident- an unfortunate accident. The woman shouldn’t have had her dress up showing her white little ass as she urinated there in the woods where she had been picking blackberries. They became concerned with trying to protect themselves and their families. When they found out the little girl had seen them they became obsessed with trying to stay out of her sight. The child ran into each of the men. Each time she identified one of the men as her mother’s murderer she was told she was wrong. The men were family men. They were prominent citizens. The uncle and aunt took the children to raise. After the child kept insisting she had identified the men correctly the uncle got a detective to investigate the case. The detective was murdered. The death was investigated by the sheriff and declared an accident. The child entered her teens and her mother’s death had still not been avenged. The system had let her down. She felt unbearable guilt that she hadn’t somehow been able to stop her mother from being murdered. When she was fifteen years old she began taking the punishment of her mother’s murderers into her own hands. Over several years the three men died. Each time she was present. After the death of the last man she collapsed mentally. The aunt and uncle realized she had been responsible for the deaths of her mother’s murderers. The girl had fallen in love with one of the men’s sons. It was never to be. The girl’s mind became that of the child she used to be. The aunt and uncle lived life day by day hoping she would never regain the horror of the memories that lay buried in her mind.
