Download or read book Sweet Machine written by Mark Doty and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Doty's last two award-winning collections of poetry, as well as his acclaimed memoir Heaven's Coast, used the devastation of AIDS as a lens through which to consider questions of loss, love and identity. The poems in Sweet Machine see the world from a new, hard-won perspective: A coming back to life, after so much death, a way of seeing the body's "sweet machine" not simply as a time bomb, but also as a vibrant, sensual, living thing. These poems are themselves "sweet machines"—lyrical, exuberant and joyous—and they mark yet another milestone in the extraordinary career of one of our most distinguished and accomplished poets.

Download or read book The Foot of God written by Pierre R. Léon and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One often speaks of the hand of God. One forgets that his foot is more terrifying. Where he puts it, no grass will ever grow. Le Pied de Dieu is a reading and a rewriting of the sacred text where Pierre Léon recreates the God he knew from a Catholic upbringing. He relates the Bible to us, sometimes in good humor and sometimes in bad! God, who is always serious and often wrathful, is unwittingly also very funny in his commandments, his injunctions, his sexism, his sexual and other obsessions. In this irreverent text where parody is mixed with truth, and which is based on abundant quotations from the Old and the New Testament, Pierre Léon sketches the striking portrait of a God whom Bible school and sacred history had carefully concealed from us.
Download or read book A Passionate Apprentice written by Virginia Woolf and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. Behind the loss and confusion, however, and always near the surface of her writing is a constructive force at work - a powerful impulse towards health. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. This early chronicle represents the beginning of the future Virginia Woolf's apprenticeship as a novelist. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. In Woolf's words, 'Here is a volume of fairly acute life (the first really lived year of my life).'
Download or read book Le Corbusier the Dishonest Architect written by Malcolm Millais and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book for architects, but for all those that have suffered, consciously and unconsciously, from modern architecture and have wondered how it came about. This was largely due to one man, an architect called Le Corbusier. For some he was a genius, but the truth is he was a sham, a fake, a charlatan whose only gift was for self-publicity. He was the most influential architect of the second half of the twentieth century; his influence overwhelmed the architectural profession on a global scale, who swallowed his publicity whole, and still hold him in awe. For the rest of the world, the mere mortals, his influence was disastrous, as traditional buildings were destroyed and replaced by featureless boxes of varying sizes, imposing a dreariness hitherto unimagined. As usual, it was the poor who suffered most as they were herded into tower-blocks. These were often grouped into estates that ringed many towns and cities, which then degenerated into high-rise slums with all the well-known attendant social problems. This book exposes the myths that surround Le Corbusier, detailing the endless failures of his proposals and his projects. These were due to his profound dishonesty, both as a person and as an architect. His legacy was an architectural profession that believed, and still believe, they were designing buildings based on logic, functionality and honesty whereas they were doing the opposite.
