Download or read book Sweet Anticipation written by David Huron and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-01-25 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological theory of expectation that David Huron proposes in Sweet Anticipation grew out of the author's experimental efforts to understand how music evokes emotions. These efforts evolved into a general theory of expectation that will prove informative to readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as those interested in music. The book describes a set of psychological mechanisms and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music. All examples of notated music can be heard on the Web. Huron proposes that emotions evoked by expectation involve five functionally distinct response systems: reaction responses (which engage defensive reflexes); tension responses (where uncertainty leads to stress); prediction responses (which reward accurate prediction); imagination responses (which facilitate deferred gratification); and appraisal responses (which occur after conscious thought is engaged). For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and spine-tingling chills. Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia we experienced as we apprehend the world.

Book In Defense of Sentimentality

Download or read book In Defense of Sentimentality written by Robert C. Solomon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy has as much to do with feelings as it does with thoughts and thinking. Philosophy, accordingly, requires not only emotional sensitivity but an understanding of the emotions, not as curious but marginal psychological phenomena but as the very substance of life. In this, the second book in a series devoted to his work on the emotions, Robert Solomon presents a defense of the emotions and of sentimentality against the background of what he perceives as a long history of abuse in philosophy and social thought and art and literary criticism. The title piece reopens a classic debate about the role of sentimentality in art and literature. In subsequent chapters, Solomon discusses not only such "moral sentiments" as sympathy and compassion but also grief, gratitude, love, horror, and even vengeance. He also defends, with appropriate caution, the "seven deadly sins." The emotions, at least some emotions--are essential to a well-lived life. They are or can be virtues, features of the human condition without which civilized life would be unimaginable.

Book Emotion Relationships 2 Books in 1

Download or read book Emotion Relationships 2 Books in 1 written by Sadhguru and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotion “One can make any emotion into a creative force in one’s life.” – Sadhguru It’s not just poetic license that allows us to refer to emotions as “juicy”. In a literal sense also, emotions are a chemical cocktail that course through our bodies. But while we have no problems with pleasant emotions, unpleasant emotions are the source of much angst in our lives. In Emotion: The Juice of Life, Sadhguru looks at the gamut of human emotions and how to turn them into stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Relationships “If you enhance yourself into a very beautiful state, everyone will want to hold a relationship with you.” – Sadhguru Human beings constantly make and break relationships. Unfortunately, relationships can make and break human beings too. Why are relationships such a circus for most of us? What is this primal urge within us that demands a bond – physical, mental, or emotional – with another? And how do we keep this bond from turning into bondage? These are the fundamental questions that Relationships: Bond or Bondage looks at as Sadhguru shares with us the keys to forming lasting and joyful relationships, whether they are with husband or wife, family and friends, at work, or with the very existence itself. Sadhguru is a yogi and profound mystic of our times. An absolute clarity of perception places him in a unique space in not only matters spiritual but in business, environmental and international affairs, and opens a new door on all that he touches.

  • Publisher : Motilal Banarsidass Publishe
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9788120832312
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis written by Walter 'shantree' Kacera and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2007 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to offering a comprehensive understanding of the art of tongue diagnosis, this book includes ancient and modern healing practices based on Healing Tastes, Herbal Therapies and Dietary Protocols. The knowledge contained in this book is invaluable for supporting oneself and others on the journey to wholeness. The educational foundation of the book prepares us to really understand the meaning and use of tongue diagnosis. The ancient art of tongue diagnosis, as this book defines it, is the science of the shape, shadings and markings of the tongue, which describe the current state of an individual`s health, as well as their inherited constitution. The potential of tongue diagnosis is that it gives a non-invasive way to measure the tissue integrity of the body, especially the Agni of the digestive system or the Fire or strength of the digestive system. This can be assessed by simply observing the color and structure of the tongue, then we have a very simple way to take preventive steps to correct those imbalances, and we have a very simple feedback system, meaning the tongue`s color, size, shape and shading, to let us know how successful our approach has been.

Book The Ontology of Well Being in Social Policy and Welfare Practice

Download or read book The Ontology of Well Being in Social Policy and Welfare Practice written by Steven R. Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides important philosophical insights concerning the kind of creatures we are such that we can experience something we understand as well-being, with these insights then being applied to various areas of social policy and welfare practice. The author defends what he calls The Ontology of Well-Being Thesis (TOWT), addressing ontological questions about the human condition, and how these questions are fundamental to issues concerning what we might know about human well-being and how we should promote it. Yet, surprisingly, these ontological questions are often side-lined in academic, political, and policy and practice based debates about well-being. Addressing these questions, head-on, six features of the human condition are identified via TOWT: human embodiment, finiteness, sociability, cognition, evaluation, and agency. The main argument of the thesis is that these features reveal the conflicting character of human experiences, which can, in turn, have a profound bearing on our experience of well-being. Notably, it is our conflicting experiences of time, emotion, and self-consciousness, which can potentially help us experience well-being in complex and multi-dimensional ways. The author then applies these insights to various social policies and welfare practices, concerning, for example, pensions, disability, bereavement counselling, social prescribing within health settings, the promotion of mental health, and co-production practices. This book is of importance to philosophers, social policy analysts, and welfare practitioners and is also relevant to the fields of psychology, sociology, politics, and the health sciences.
