Book excerpt: “As gripping as a thriller and accessible for people without any scientific education,” wrote the biggest Swedish broadsheet, Dagens Nyheter, when My Sweet Heart was released in 2012. The book has been fundamental in the rise of the low-carb movement in Sweden, where the debate surrounding low-fat diets has been raging for almost a decade. Inspired by a woman with type 2 diabetes who, using a strict low-carb diet, was able to stop taking insulin injections and lost 42 kilos in weight, science writer Ann Fernholm, PhD in Molecular Biotechnology, started to examine the science behind low-fat dietary advice. Why should people who need injections to reduce blood sugar fill their plates with carbohydrates that raise blood sugar levels? Like a mystery writer she unravels the story of how, in the mid-1900s, research took a wrong turn. Piece by piece, she also puts together the puzzle surrounding ill health. Why are abdominal fat and type 2 diabetes so dangerous? Why do they increase the risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia? What she discovers is that high blood sugar and high insulin levels are real villains in many major public health problems. Readers appreciate Ann Fernholm for her factual depth, at the same time as she has a unique ability to describe science in an understandable, lively manner. My Sweet Heart has received unanimously good reviews in Sweden and has been a turning point in many people’s lives.

There are essays on the Neoclassical architect Sir John Soane, Sigmund Freud and Kurt Schwitters, one of the masters of collage. Others examine imperialist encounters with remote cultures – the consquitadors in America in the sixteenth century, and the British in the Pacific in the eighteenth – and the more recent collectors of popular culture, be they of Swatch watches, Elvis Presley memorabilia or of packaging and advertising. Book Sweet Revenge

Book excerpt: For this definitive biography, acclaimed journalist and bestselling author Tom Bower was granted unprecedented access to Simon Cowell and those around him—and the result is a fascinating multilayered portrait of one of the world’s most intriguing television personalities ever to dominate the music industry. Simon Cowell has made an international name for himself as the no-holds-barred judge on the television phenomenon American Idol. He’s been called mean, arrogant, brash, and unapologetic, but his stinging barbs and smug personality have also earned him cheers from fans, as well as millions of dollars, a string of exotic beauties, and industry clout to develop his own projects. But Cowell’s true reward is revenge. Sweet Revenge is the ultimate insider’s account of Simon Cowell’s rise to fame—even as others plotted his downfall—from his cheeky exploits as a British school lad to his failures as a frustrated young music exec in London to his explosive rivalry with Simon Fuller over the genesis of the Idol franchise to the PR disaster that nearly sunk his wildly successful show The X Factor. Conducting more than 150 interviews with industry power players, Cowell’s inner circle, and Cowell himself on a private jet, chartered yacht, at his L.A. home, and on the studio lot, Tom Bower pulls back the curtain on a man who is at once insecure, ambitious, easily bored, vain, needy, and driven, a man who will go to any limit to secure his success. Cowell is also revealed as a loyal friend and loving son. His father, to whom Cowell was particularly close, became his most trusted adviser and mentor. Packed with juicy details, exclusive interviews, and never-before-revealed facts, Sweet Revenge presents a complete picture of Simon Cowell that few have ever seen.

His sister-in-law and her circle of twenty-something post-punk bored-again friends are looking for a hobby. It is the beginning of the 1980's when The Committee is formed, pre-the internet, mobile phone and social network revolution. And very much pre-the world of political correctness. Ostensibly out to help Ricky they are very much looking to amuse themselves. This stylised black comedy deals with layered levels of persecution and relative reality that boredom and angst have engendered, with the eponymous George unwittingly at both its centre and periphery.

Book Drinking Smoke

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mac Marshall
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2013-08-31
  • ISBN : 0824836855
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Drinking Smoke written by Mac Marshall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco kills 5 million people every year and that number is expected to double by the year 2020. Despite its enormous toll on human health, tobacco has been largely neglected by anthropologists. Drinking Smoke combines an exhaustive search of historical materials on the introduction and spread of tobacco in the Pacific with extensive anthropological accounts of the ways Islanders have incorporated this substance into their lives. The author uses a relatively new concept called a syndemic—the synergistic interaction of two or more afflictions contributing to a greater burden of disease in a population—to focus at once on the health of a community, political and economic structures, and the wider physical and social environment and ultimately provide an in-depth analysis of smoking’s negative health impact in Oceania. In Drinking Smoke the idea of a syndemic is applied to the current health crisis in the Pacific, where the number of deaths from coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease continues to rise, and the case is made that smoking tobacco in the form of industrially manufactured cigarettes is the keystone of the contemporary syndemic in Oceania. The author shows how tobacco consumption (particularly cigarette smoking after World War II) has become the central interstitial element of a syndemic that produces most of the morbidity and mortality Pacific Islanders suffer. This syndemic is made up of a bundle of diseases and conditions, a set of historical circumstances and events, and social and health inequities most easily summed up as “poverty.” He calls this the tobacco syndemic and argues that smoking is the crucial behavior—the “glue”—holding all of these diseases and conditions together. Drinking Smoke is the first book-length examination of the damaging tobacco syndemic in a specific world region. It is a must-read for scholars and students of anthropology, Pacific studies, history, and economic globalization, as well as for public health practitioners and those working in allied health fields. More broadly the book will appeal to anyone concerned with disease interaction, the social context of disease production, and the full health consequences of the global promotional efforts of Big Tobacco.

Book Georges Perec s Geographies

Download or read book Georges Perec s Geographies written by Charles Forsdick and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Perec, novelist, filmmaker and essayist, was one of the most inventive and original writers of the twentieth century. A fascinating aspect of his work is its intrinsically geographical nature. With major projects on space and place, Perec’s writing speaks to a variety of geographical, urban and architectural concerns, both in a substantive way, including a focus on cities, streets, homes and apartments, and in a methodological way, experimenting with methods of urban exploration and observation, classification, enumeration and taxonomy.
