Book excerpt: The first middle grade novel from Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin’ (now a popular Netflix film), is a funny, heartwarming story perfect for fans of Rebecca Stead, Ali Benjamin, and Holly Goldberg Sloan. Four starred reviews! Patricia “Sweet Pea” DiMarco wasn’t sure what to expect when her parents announced they were getting a divorce. She never could have imagined that they would have the “brilliant” idea of living in nearly identical houses on the same street. In the one house between them lives their eccentric neighbor Miss Flora Mae, the famed local advice columnist behind “Miss Flora Mae I?” Dividing her time between two homes is not easy. And it doesn’t help that at school, Sweet Pea is now sitting right next to her ex–best friend, Kiera, a daily reminder of the friendship that once was. Things might be unbearable if Sweet Pea didn’t have Oscar—her new best friend—and her fifteen-pound cat, Cheese. Then one day Flora leaves for a trip and asks Sweet Pea to forward her the letters for the column. And Sweet Pea happens to recognize the handwriting on one of the envelopes. What she decides to do with that letter sets off a chain of events that will forever change the lives of Sweet Pea DiMarco, her family, and many of the readers of “Miss Flora Mae I?”

Book Positive Technology Designing E experiences for Positive Change

Download or read book Positive Technology Designing E experiences for Positive Change written by Andrea Gaggioli and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the potential role that digital technologies can play in promoting well-being. Smartphones, wearable devices, virtual/augmented reality, social media, and the internet provide a wealth of useful tools and resources to support psychological interventions that facilitate positive emotions, resilience, personal growth, creativity, and social connectedness. Understanding the full extent of this potential, however, requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the scientific principles of well-being into the design of e-experiences that foster positive change. This book provides an overview of recent advances and future challenges in Positive Technology, an emergent field within human-computer interaction that seeks to understand how interactive technologies can be used in evidence-based well-being interventions. Its focus of analysis is two-fold: at the theoretical level, Positive Technology aims to develop conceptual frameworks and models for understanding how computers can be effectively used to help individuals achieve greater well-being. At the methodological and applied level, Positive Technology is concerned with the design, development, and validation of digital experiences that promote positive change through pleasure, flow, meaning, competence, and positive relationships.

Book excerpt: Consciously learn the hand action of the golf swing then unconsciously apply this hand action within the structure of turning shoulders and hips during the golf swing. This book is written from the perspective that correct hand action is crucial to developing a well coordinated, fault-free golf swing. Moe Norman and me share the opinion that proper hand action is missing from many golf swings. In short, this book teaches the hand action of the golf swing and how to coordinate your shoulder turn with this hand action. The lessons on the hand action of the golf swing consist of four chapters: The Golf Grip, Addressing the Ball, the Hand Action, and Adding the Shoulder Turn. These chapters are written with detailed step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photographs illustrating many of the steps. Book Reviews The Feathered Quill by Deb Fowler ... This amazing golf instructional will be of use to everyone from the novice to the seasoned amateur who wants to tweak his or her game. This golf instructional was one of the best I've seen in some time, one that anyone wanting to improve their game should definitely add to their list! Kirkus Reviews ... When the author discusses hands, he covers everything from the waggle--those tiny adjustments that help fine-tune the "sweet spot"--through hand pivot and rotation, foot position, shoulder alignment, establishing target lines and the legendary golfer Paul Runyan's chipping technique. The lessons here are complicated--there are no gimmes--but they're also winningly commonsensical. A vital book that fills a gap in the golf instruction literature.

Book Insurance Climate Change and the Law

Download or read book Insurance Climate Change and the Law written by Franziska Arnold-Dwyer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insurance industry has found itself at the front line of climate change challenges, providing insurance cover in relation to risks associated with climate change. As risk carriers, insurers pay claims for climate change related losses – such as property damage caused by windstorms, flooding, and wildfires – which have been increasing in frequency and severity. As major institutional investors, insurance companies invest in assets that may be increasingly vulnerable to climate risks. Insurance regulators across the globe have therefore started to require insurance companies to identify, manage, and report on climate change risks that could pose a threat to their financial stability. However, managing and reporting on the effect of climate risk on an insurer’s balance sheet is an inward-looking perspective that does not stem climate change. It needs to be paired with an outward-looking perspective that takes account of the insurance industry’s impact on the environment and the insurance industry’s capacity to influence what policyholders, investee enterprises, and other business partners do to address climate change challenges. For the insurance industry, the key components of positive outward impact are ‘impact underwriting’ and ‘impact investment.’ This book sets out the current legal and regulatory landscape for impact underwriting and impact investment. Whilst the focus of research and regulatory interventions to date has been on inward impact, in this book it will be argued that, to take positive climate action that supports the Paris Agreement goals and the national and international Net Zero targets, the debate should now move on to considering the positive outward impact the insurance industry can make and how we can create a legal environment to facilitate this. The book puts forward the case for a new vision of the role of the insurance industry as climate action enablers and makes proposals for insurance products and risk transfer and loss resilience structures that can support policyholders in their transition to a Net Zero economy. The audience for this book will include legal practitioners, insurance industry professionals, financial and insurance regulators, policymakers, and interested academics.
