Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the observational work of William and Caroline Herschel. It focuses on deep-sky objects, observed 1774-1817. The study of the sky from southern England also concerned double stars and the Solar System, yielding the Uranus discovery in 1781. But William Herschel was much more than a mere observer. He built large reflectors, developed new methods and thought about the nature and evolution of cosmic objects and the structure of the Milky Way. He was an extremely influential astronomer and had a worthy successor, his son John.

Book excerpt: This is the biography of Henry Crowe whose career encompassed time as an infantryman with the Royal Irish Regiment during the First World War, an observer with the RFC and fledgling RAF, a pilot in Ireland at the time of the Irish War of Independence, a photographic officer and flight commander in Iraq, and Commanding Officer of Nos. 23 and 74 Squadrons. His memories of time spent in Iraq and on the North West Frontier between the wars have a real resonance today, illustrating just how little has changed in some respects.Henry served at the Air Ministry in various positions and concluded his service with the RAF in India, retiring as an Air Commodore in 1945. He had a keen interest in photography and took hundreds of images of the places he served, the aircraft he flew and saw, and the people he met. With an early Bell and Howell cine camera he also captured film of Malta, Iraq and India between the wars. As a photographic record alone this book is fascinating. But Henry wrote about his experiences as well and it is his memoirs that form the backbone of this biography, written with the full backing of his family.Henry Crowe was highly decorated and especially well thought of during the course of his career; reading Bob Crosseys account of his fascinating life, it is clear to see why.

Download or read book Beneath a Turkish Sky written by Philip Lecane and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the First World War’s largest seaborne invasion and the Irish were at the forefront. Recruited in Ireland, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were ordered to spearhead the invasion of Gallipoli in Turkey. Deadlocked in trench warfare on the Western Front, the British High Command hoped the assault would knock Germany’s ally out of the war. Using letters and photographs, this book tells the story of the ‘Dubs’ officers and men as they set off on what was presented as a great adventure to win glory and capture Constantinople. Accompanied by the Royal Munster Fusiliers, packed aboard the SS River Clyde, the ‘Dubs’ landed from ships’ boats on the fiercely defended beach at Sedd-el-Bahr. The song The Foggy Dew says, ‘It were better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sedd-el-Bahr.’ This book tells the story of the forgotten Irishmen who died beneath a Turkish sky in what was Ireland’s D-Day.

Download or read book Her Piece of Sky written by Deepa Agarwal and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is contemporary women’s writing in Hindi all about? How far does it reach beyond the commonly perceived limits of feminine experience or feminist ideology? From legendary writer Mannu Bhandari’s The Cremation Ground which satirises notions of eternal love, to Alpana Mishra’s superbly crafted Homeless in the Cantonment, a devastating chronicle of army life, these stories dissect numerous aspects of human existence with a startling incisiveness. Mridula Garg’s exploration of an unusual relationship in The Second One exposes the hypocrisy rife in so-called ‘decent’ middle-class families while Mamta Kalia brings empathy and humour into her depiction of a poignant human situation in The Agony of an Artiste. Political issues are raised by Chitra Mudgal, Chandrakanta and Vandana Rag. While Kavita focuses on the new dilemmas that challenge women today, veteran writer Rajee Seth presents a picture of the daily battle of a working woman with empathy and insight. Sexual obsession is explored too, from both the female and male point of view by Manisha Kulshreshtha, and by Pratyaksha in her sensual narrative of infatuation, The Hunt. Published by Zubaan.
