Book Swedish Sensationsfilms

Download or read book Swedish Sensationsfilms written by Daniel Ekeroth and published by Bazillion Points LLC. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By and large, Sweden's place in film history is secure and prominent. Swedish films are associated with Ingmar Bergman's successful and high-quality works. However, another breed of Swedish film is notorious for its laissez-faire attitude towards nudity and relaxed sexuality. Produced in the back yard of the Swedish film industry, these sexually daring films join countless sensational movies that deal with shocking or taboo subjects - street punks, space aliens, hard drugs and drunken Vikings. Ekeroth delves into Swedish culture and returns with an overview of 'Sensationsfilms'.

Book The Man from the Third Row

Download or read book The Man from the Third Row written by Fredrik Gustafsson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until his early retirement at age 50, Hasse Ekman was one of the leading lights of Swedish cinema, an actor, writer, and director of prodigious talents. Yet today his work is virtually unknown outside of Sweden, eclipsed by the filmography of his occasional collaborator (and frequent rival) Ingmar Bergman. This comprehensive introduction-the first ever in English-follows Ekman's career from his early days as a film journalist, through landmark films such as Girl with Hyacinths (1950), to his retirement amid exhaustion and disillusionment. Combining historical context with insightful analyses of Ekman's styles and themes, this long overdue study considerably enriches our understanding of Swedish film history.

Book The Visible Wall

Download or read book The Visible Wall written by Rochelle Wright and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on films produced in Sweden for primarily Swedish audiences, Wright analyzes how the portrayal of the relatively small Jewish minority has evolved over the years. She also compares the images of Jews in Swedish film with those of other ethnic subcultures: long-term resident communities such as tattare ('travelers', an indigenous pariah group often confused with gypsies), Finns, the Sami, and recent immigrant populations such as Greeks, Italians, Turks, and Yugoslavians. She is also the first scholar to discuss Ingmar Bergman's presentation of Jewish characters. Wright confronts important - and exceedingly difficult - social questions. She deals head-on with xenophobia, anti-Semitism, immigration, assimilation, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and the national self-image of Swedes as reflected in their cinema. She also analyzes the manner in which Swedish film represents the persecution of Jews in Nazi-dominated Europe.

Book Swedish Mentality

  • Author : Åke Daun
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 1996-01-12
  • ISBN : 0271071915
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Swedish Mentality written by Åke Daun and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1996-01-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a distinctly Swedish national character? Are Swedes truly shy, unemotional, conflict-avoiding, melancholy, and dour? Swedish Mentality, the English translation of the hugely successful book published in Sweden in 1989, considers the reality behind the myth. The author, Åke Daun, is a respected ethnologist who is sometimes referred to as the "guru" of Swedish character. In recent years, it has become popular to discuss Swedishness and Swedish identity. The advent of the European Union and the increasing presence of immigrant refugees in Sweden have fueled public debate on the distinctiveness of Swedish culture. Daun, however, goes beyond stereotype, drawing upon statistics gathered over more than a decade of research. The result is an entertaining and engagingly written book. Throughout, Daun quotes from interviews with native Swedes and immigrants as well as from travel accounts, folklore, and proverbs. We learn why some Swedes might prefer to walk up a flight of stairs rather than share an elevator with a neighbor and why some gain satisfaction from walking alone in the woods or going fishing. Daun describes a range of factors influencing Swedish character, including population composition, rural background, and even climate. He recognizes behavioral variations related to gender, age, class, and region, and he considers subtleties of individual character as well. Swedish Mentality should interest a wide array of readers, whether of Swedish descent or not.

Book Nitrate Won t Wait

Download or read book Nitrate Won t Wait written by Anthony Slide and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looks at the preservation process: newsreel, television, and color preservation; the often controversial issue of colorization; and commercial film archives. It provides detailed histories of the major players in the preservation battle including the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, the American Film Institute, the Museum of Modern Art, the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and the Library of Congress. This first historical overview of film preservation in the United States is also highly controversial in its exposure and criticism of the politicization of film preservation in recent years, and the rising bureaucracy which has often lost sight of preservation and restoration as the ultimate purpose of film archives.

Book A Cinema of Obsession

Download or read book A Cinema of Obsession written by Mariah Larsson and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mai Elizabeth Zetterling (1925–94) is among the most exceptional postwar female filmmakers. Born in Sweden, she lived in England and France for most of her life, making her directorial debut in 1964 with the Swedish art film Loving Couples after a fraught transition from working in front of the camera as a successful actress. Critics have compared her work to that of Ingmar Bergman, Luis Buñuel, and Federico Fellini, but Zetterling had a distinct style—alternately radical and reactionary—that straddled the gendered divide between high art and mass culture. Tackling themes of sexuality, isolation, and creativity, her documentaries, short and feature films, and television works are visually striking. Her oeuvre provoked controversy and scandal through her sensational representations of reproduction and motherhood. Mariah Larsson provides a lively and authoritative take on Zetterling's legacy and complicated position within film and women's history. A Cinema of Obsession provides necessary perspective on how the breadth of an artist's collected works keeps gatekeepers from recognizing their achievements, and questions why we still distinguish between national and global visual cultures and the big and small screens in the #MeToo era.
