Download or read book Tiffany s Swedenborgian Angels written by Mary Lou Bertucci and published by Swedenborg Foundation. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902, a Swedenborgian church in Glendale, Ohio, commissioned a set of seven stained-glass windows -- each representing an angel from one of the churches in the book of Revelation -- as a gift for a sister church in Cincinnati. Made by the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany, the windows are a vibrant example of his stunning glasswork. After the church was torn down, the windows were put into storage and forgotten. Recently rediscovered, they have been restored to their former glory and are now part of a traveling exhibition called In Company with Angels. This companion book gives the history and the biblical background to the angels as well as insight into the lessons these angels can teach us today.
Download or read book The Delights of Wisdom Pertaining to Conjugial Love written by Emanuel Swedenborg and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delights of Wisdom Pertaining to Conjugial Love is a book by Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish theologist, scientist, thinker and mystic, here providing a thorough spiritual understanding of marriage love and sex. Excerpt: "Spiritual cold in marriages is a disunion of souls and a disjunction of minds, whence come indifference, discord, contempt, disdain, and aversion; from which, in several cases, at length comes separation as to bed, chamber, and house. That these effects take place with married partners, while their primitive love is on the decline, and becomes cold, is too well known to need any comment. The reason is, because conjugial cold above all others resides in human minds; for the essential conjugial principle is inscribed on the soul, to the end that a soul may be propagated from a soul, and the soul of the father into the offspring. Hence it is that this cold originates there, and successively goes downward into the principles thence derived, and infects them; and thus changes the joys and delights of the primitive love into what is sad and undelightful."

Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."
Download or read book C zanne and the End of Impressionism written by Richard Shiff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.

Download or read book The Phantom Image written by Patrick R. Crowley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a rich corpus of art works, including sarcophagi, tomb paintings, and floor mosaics, Patrick R. Crowley investigates how something as insubstantial as a ghost could be made visible through the material grit of stone and paint. In this fresh and wide-ranging study, he uses the figure of the ghost to offer a new understanding of the status of the image in Roman art and visual culture. Tracing the shifting practices and debates in antiquity about the nature of vision and representation, Crowley shows how images of ghosts make visible structures of beholding and strategies of depiction. Yet the figure of the ghost simultaneously contributes to a broader conceptual history that accounts for how modalities of belief emerged and developed in antiquity. Neither illustrations of ancient beliefs in ghosts nor depictions of afterlife, these images show us something about the visual event of seeing itself. The Phantom Image offers essential insight into ancient art, visual culture, and the history of the image.

Download or read book Sacred Scripture White Horse written by Emanuel Swedenborg and published by New Century Edition. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sacred Scripture / White Horse, Emanuel Swedenborg provides the spiritual theory behind the verse-by-verse analysis found in multivolume works like Secrets of Heaven and Revelation Unveiled. Sacred Scripture provides an explanation of how the inner meaning of Scripture relates to the outer (literal) meaning by using numerous examples to illustrate how similar themes emerge again and again through the Bible. White Horse begins with a short summary of the spiritual meaning of the white horse described in Revelation 19:11 and continues with an effective summary of Swedenborgs theology of Scriptural interpretation.
