Book excerpt: This series of small primers on drawing encourages readers not only to pick up a pen and start drawing, but to see the world that surrounds them with fresh eyes. Visual thinking and using one's imagination are skills that are often neglected in today's world. With author Peter Jenny's help, readers will learn to perceive their environment in a new way and will soon follow his lead, discovering the joy of drawing. The three books in the series each present a short introduction by Jenny and twenty-two easy exercises, with each book focusing on a different aspect: Notes on Drawing Technique takes actions such as gesticulating, touching, feeling, doodling, and moving as the starting points for putting pen to paper. Notes on Figure Drawing focuses on the archetypal presentation of the human figure, and Learning to See teaches the reader to discover art in everyday objects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweden Through the Artist's Eye So sings a poet who has entered deeply into Swedish nature and Swedish life. 'Sweden, our mother!" We love our mother, but we do not find it easy to dilate on her merits to any passing stranger. We know full well that there are other mothers, more beautiful, mightier, wiser than ours. We do not claim from others anything beyond respect for our mother, but we ourselves know what treasures we have received from her. Great painters have often been strikingly successful in painting or drawing their mothers. Love and reverence have guided their hands, and given birth to creations of immortal beauty. Think of Durer's drawing, of Rembrandt's, Whistlers and Carl Larsson's paintings of their mothers. The pent-up springs gush forth, loosened by love's warmth, and, as Durer has it, 'the secret treasure of the heart is made manifest in the work." And thus it is when the artist paints the land which gave him birth. He discovers and points out beauties and grandeurs which no other eye has discerned, and thus deepens and enriches the feelings of his countrymen towards their common fatherland. Book excerpt: The menstrual product industry has played a large role in shaping the last hundred years of menstrual culture, from technological innovation to creative advertising, education in classrooms and as employers of thousands in factories around the world. How much do we know about this sector and how has it changed in later decades? What constitutes ‘the industry’, who works in it, and how is it adapting to the current menstrual equity movement? Cash Flow provides a new academic study of the menstrual corporate landscape that links its twentieth-century origins to the current ‘menstrual moment’. Drawing on a range of previously unexplored archival materials and interviews with industry insiders, each chapter examines one key company and brand: Saba in Norway, Essity in Sweden, Tambrands in the Soviet Union, Procter & Gamble in Britain and Europe, Kimberly-Clark in North America, and start-ups Clue and Thinx. By engaging with these corporate collections, the book highlights how the industry has survived as its consumers continually change.

Download or read book Studies in Strindberg written by Michael Robinson and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Strindberg’s accomplishments as a dramatist are set against his achievements in other fields, as an autobiographer, painter, letter writer and theatre director. There are studies of individual plays, in which Strindberg’s theatre is related both to naturalism and the theatre of the absurd, and of the role played by his life-long interest in historical drama as a means of mirroring his own experience. Other essays consider the problems posed by Strindberg’s preoccupation with converting his own life into literature and the relationship between his later plays and the musical Expressionism of Schoenberg and Berg as well as the importance he placed on letter-writing as a model for writing of all kinds; these letters are also used to explore his ideas about acting and theatre generally. A recurring concern is with the extraordinary period of mental and emotional turmoil, known as the Inferno Crisis, in which Strindberg refashioned himself as a writer; not least through his ground-breaking work as a painter. The collection is prefaced by an account of the difficulties Strindberg’s works have encountered in their reception in England and concludes with a ‘ penance for Strindberg’ in the form of a wide-ranging study of the nineteenth century actress that re-examines the concern with character and theatricality of the earlier essays in a new context.
