Book Swami Vivekananda s History of Universal Religion and Its Potential for Global Reconciliation

Download or read book Swami Vivekananda s History of Universal Religion and Its Potential for Global Reconciliation written by Sister Gayatriprana and published by Cook Communication. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in the words of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) a history of Vedanta, the deep exploration of the inner human world going back to the most ancient rishis or seers whose testimony is still revered in India. He traces the tradition up to the beginning of the twentieth century, showing how the dynamics of social structures within Vedanta and the appearance from within Vedanta of traditions such as Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism influenced and molded the tradition. In addition, he studies the impact of the Western, Abrahamic invasions of India that began around the eleventh century CE. These brought to bear on Vedanta a worldview which operated on the assumption that the physical world was the primary reality and that the kind of radical exploration of the inner world embraced by Vedanta was highly suspect and not valid. The Vedantic tradition adapted in many different ways, producing a variety of philosophical positions that are still extant today. Along with these traditions went various forms of yoga or self-transformation, in Vedanta the key to experiencing the inner meaning of not only philosophy, but also of our human condition, and of reality itself. This tradition presents four contexts of experience (chatushpad), suggesting the “right brain” mode of approach as described by Iain McGilchrist (2009). Under the influence of Shri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) Vivekananda gained access to vijnana or a knowledge higher than those classically described and known in the chatushpad. Vijnana permitted the acceptance of not only the traditional, deeply experiential truths of Vedanta, but also of the validity of Western materialism when seen as related to each other on a continuum of consciousness to be traversed by contemporary forms of yoga. I see the result as a resolution of “right-left” brain conflict à la McGilchrist and thereby a model for universal human understanding, conciliation and co-operation. In my introduction I attempt to show how the whole picture can be related both experientially and conceptually to matrices of consciousness developed in India as far back as the early medieval period. A large glossary and index-cum concordance indicate the various contexts and depths of thought that emerge from Vivekananda’s multi-contextual vijnana.

Book Animal Sacrifice Religion and Law in South Asia

Download or read book Animal Sacrifice Religion and Law in South Asia written by Daniela Berti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents original research on the controversies surrounding animal sacrifice in South Asia through the lens of court cases. It focuses on the parties involved in these cases: on their discourses, motivations, and contrasting points of view. Through an examination of judicial files, court decisions and newspaper articles, and interviews with protagonists, the book explores how the question of animal sacrifice is dealt with through administrative, legislative, and judicial practice. It outlines how, although animal sacrifice has over the ages been contested by various religious reform movements, the practice has remained widespread at all levels of society, especially in certain regions. It reveals that far from merely being a religious and ritual question, animal sacrifice has become a focus of broader public debate, and it discusses how the controversies highlight the contrast between ‘traditional’ and ‘reformist’ understandings of Hinduism; the conflict between the core legal and moral principles of religious freedom and social progress; and the growing concern with environmental issues and animal rights. This book was released on 2006 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mutual enrichment and tolerance between Christianity and Hinduism should be an important theme in any discussion of interreligious co-existence, because of the influence of both religions in the present day world. But is there a meeting point between Christian absolutism and Hindu universalism? Can pluralism be a solution? If the claim of one religion does not contradict the claim of the other, why should a mutual recognition, tolerance and coexistence be impossible? Why cannot the followers of different religions live together as brothers and sisters of one single loving Father? These and many other similar questions are dealt with in this book."

This book was released on 1970 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, this is Volume 2 of the nine volume series constituting 'The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda'. In these volumes we have not only a gospel to the world at large, but also, to its own children, the Charter of the Hindu faith. For the first time in history, Hinduism itself forms here the subject of generalization of a Hindu mind of the highest order. What Hinduism had needed was the organizing and consolidating of its own idea, a rock where she could lie at anchor, and an authoritative utterance in which she might recognise herself. What the world had needed was a faith that had no fear of truth. Both are found in the words and writings of Swami Vivekananda. It is the latest gospel of a modern Prophet of religion and spirituality to the mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Wolfson History Prize–winning author of The Man on Devil’s Island, the definitive biography of Vivekananda, the Indian monk who shaped the intellectual and spiritual history of both East and West. Few thinkers have had so enduring an impact on both Eastern and Western life as Swami Vivekananda, the Indian monk who inspired the likes of Freud, Gandhi, and Tagore. Blending science, religion, and politics, Vivekananda introduced Westerners to yoga and the universalist school of Hinduism called Vedanta. His teachings fostered a more tolerant form of mainstream spirituality in Europe and North America and forever changed the Western relationship to meditation and spirituality. Guru to the World traces Vivekananda’s transformation from son of a Calcutta-based attorney into saffron-robed ascetic. At the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, he fascinated audiences with teachings from Hinduism, Western esoteric spirituality, physics, and the sciences of the mind, in the process advocating a more inclusive conception of religion and expounding the evils of colonialism. Vivekananda won many disciples, most prominently the Irish activist Margaret Noble, who disseminated his ideas in the face of much disdain for the wisdom of a “subject race.” At home, he challenged the notion that religion was antithetical to nationalist goals, arguing that Hinduism was intimately connected with Indian identity. Ruth Harris offers an arresting biography, showing how Vivekananda’s thought spawned a global anticolonial movement and became a touchstone of Hindu nationalist politics a century after his death. The iconic monk emerges as a counterargument to Orientalist critiques, which interpret East-West interactions as primarily instances of Western borrowing. As Vivekananda demonstrates, we must not underestimate Eastern agency in the global circulation of ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1893, Swami Vivekananda travelled to Chicago to attend the Parliament of World Religions. There, amidst representatives of the various religions of the world, Vivekananda-who grew up in an affluent Bengali household in Calcutta, studied to be a lawyer, only to give it up to become a wandering monk-spoke of Universal Religion-'a religion which will have no place for persecution or intolerance in its polity, which will recognize the divinity in every man and woman, and whose whole scope, whose whole force, will be created in aiding humanity to realize its own true divine nature'. Although a devout Hindu, he had always been someone who felt a deep sense of belonging to the plural heritage of the Indian sub-continent. Through his learnings and travels he sought to galvanize society on the basis of love. Comprising three insightful essays, Vivekananda and Our Times situates the Swami in today's world. Rajni Bakshi's endeavour-which began a century after the Chicago address, when the country was reeling from the shock of the Ramjanmabhoomi campaign and the consequent demolition of the Babri Masjid-attempts to seek a space for reflection and shows us, through Vivekananda's ideologies, the need to reconcile with the 'other' in a 'shared quest for freedom from fear'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. I: View From the Center In the lectures contained in this volume Swami Vivekananda lays the logical foundation for a dynamic and inclusive universal religion. He argues the necessity of total freedom while providing a coherent metaphysics and psychology of the mind, upon which much of contemporary transpersonal psychology appears to have been built. The model provided in this first volume feeds into all the explanations contained in the remainder of the series. For Swami Vivekananda, the religions of the world are all prototypes of transcendental Reality, various doors through which our feelings and wills can open out into the Infinite, and the Infinite can in turn, express itself. This grand view of spirituality is what Swami Vivekananda has reawakened for our modern world.
