Download or read book The Archaeology of Sutton Park written by Michael Hodder and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sutton Park is a nationally important historic landscape. Its many visitors are often drawn by the rich ecology that this public open space of about 2,250 acres provides. However, the Park also contains extensive and well-preserved archaeological remains of various periods of the past. The recent exposure of hitherto concealed archaeological features by heathland clearance has emphasised the remarkable extent and survival of these remains. This book reveals the evidence of manmade structures and objects that show how people exploited and managed their environment; amongst other things, the 28km (17 miles) of former boundaries that explain the present-day vegetation patterns; and the impact that the industrial use of water power had on the landscape. This informative and carefully illustrated book reveals the special history of this site to visitors from near and far.
Download or read book The Medieval English Landscape 1000 1540 written by Graeme J. White and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape of medieval England was the product of a multitude of hands. While the power to shape the landscape inevitably lay with the Crown, the nobility and the religious houses, this study also highlights the contribution of the peasantry in the layout of rural settlements and ridge-and-furrow field works, and the funding of parish churches by ordinary townsfolk. The importance of population trends is emphasised as a major factor in shaping the medieval landscape: the rising curve of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries imposing growing pressures on resources, and the devastating impact of the Black Death leading to radical decline in the fourteenth century. Opening with a broad-ranging analysis of political and economic trends in medieval England, the book progresses thematically to assess the impact of farming, rural settlement, towns, the Church, and fortification using many original case studies. The concluding chapter charts the end of the medieval landscape with the dissolution of the monasteries, the replacement of castles by country houses, the ongoing enclosure of fields, and the growth of towns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspirational account profusely illustrated by several diaries and daily logs, a Facebook page of 140 photos, personal letters, and numerous newspaper articles, the Jubilee Jamboree provides a panorama of the activities of the thirty-five thousand Boy Scouts from America and ninety other nations in Sutton Park, England, during the summer of 1957. Specifically, the United States sent 1,700 of their top scouts as representatives to this gathering. The year 1957 was the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the British nobleman Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouting, and the same year as the fiftieth jubilee anniversary of the birth of scouting in 1907. Overall, the narrative portrays the daily activities of the American contingent at the National Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, their Atlantic Ocean crossings aboard the MV Fairsea, then the events and living conditions at the jamboree itself, and finally their two-week tour of Europe.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the conservation of tropical forests has received worldwide publicity whereas effective forest management, particularly for timber extraction, has attracted little attention and gained some notoriety. The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill defined role (Swaine 1996).
