Book Legal frameworks enabling sustainable land use investment in Mozambique Current strengths and opportunities for improvement

Download or read book Legal frameworks enabling sustainable land use investment in Mozambique Current strengths and opportunities for improvement written by Eduardo Chiziane and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) assessed the legal frameworks that govern land-use activities and investments in Mozambique. Mozambique’s legal framework for environmental management is well developed, and recent legal reforms have strengthened key public interest safeguards. Similarly, the country has established a comprehensive framework for investment through the Investment Law and Investment Promotion Centre (CPI), and enshrined in the Land Law the right to the use and benefit of land (DUAT). The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process places public consultation at the heart of effective environmental management. It extends participation to a broad spectrum of stakeholders at an early stage, allowing, in theory, substantial influence over the design and implementation of the EIA process. The National Council for Sustainable Development (CONDES) and the Ministry for Environmental Coordination (MICOA) have not managed, however, to influence high level government policy decisions and push convincingly for a sustainable development agenda.

Book excerpt: Participatory Planning for Climate Compatible Development in Maputo, Mozambique is a practitioners’ handbook that builds upon the experience of a pilot project that was awarded the United Nations ‘Lighthouse Activity’ Award. Building upon a long scholarly tradition of participatory planning, this dual-language (English/Portuguese) book addresses crucial questions about the relevance of citizen participation in planning for climate compatible development and argues that citizens have knowledge and access to resources that enable them to develop a sustainable vision for their community. In order to do so, the author proposes a Participatory Action Planning methodology to organise communities, and also advances mechanisms for institutional development through partnerships.

Download or read book Smart Energy in Mozambique written by Jan-Niclas Gesenhues and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries around the world are undergoing a paradigm shift in energy supply from centralised, fossil-fuelled supply systems to a decentralised, intelligently networked and climate-friendly form of energy supply. Countries in the Global South are playing a key role in this development. There, innovative, decentralised supply systems are already being used intensively in order to connect more people to a reliable and modern system of power supply. Using Mozambique as an example, this study shows how a smartly networked energy supply system grows from the bottom up. It focuses particularly on possible supply strategies and technologies as well as on the political and economic drivers of and barriers to smart power supply. This is the basis for strategies designed to achieve important global development goals—especially in the areas of energy, the climate, health and poverty reduction.

Book Integrating Environmental Issues Into a Strategy for Sustainable Agricultural Development

Download or read book Integrating Environmental Issues Into a Strategy for Sustainable Agricultural Development written by Alemneh Dejene and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Mozambique, in conjunction with the World Bank and other donor agencies, is preparing a strategy for agricultural development in Mozambique. For this strategy to promote sustainable development, it must take into consideration the environmental implications of the proposed courses of action. The strategy should identify vital environmental risks associated with the development of natural resources and suggest alternative ways to reduce these risks and to ensure sustainability. This paper identifies the most important factors affecting the environment in Mozambique as they relate to agricultural and rural development. The paper also discusses developments in other economic and social spheres which have an impact on the development of the agricultural sector as well as the potential risks they may pose to the environment.

Book Territorial Development and Water Energy Food Nexus in the Global South

Download or read book Territorial Development and Water Energy Food Nexus in the Global South written by Laura Montedoro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the results from the Politecnico di Milan’s award-winning “Boa_Ma_Nhã, Maputo!” research-by-design project, which studied various transdisciplinary approaches to development in the context of the Global South. The challenges of urbanization are well known, but that only goes so far in aiding implementation. From local considerations like water access and housing rights to global issues like climate change, territorial development demands solutions that address the needs of the specific population while keeping such goals as sustainability and inclusion in mind. By focusing on a number of towns within the Maputo Province of Mozambique, and thus addressing many of the issues endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa, the research, structurally presented so as to aid those who may require introduction to the issue, makes a clear case in favor of always keeping the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus in mind when formulating development strategies for improving people’s lives, as well as the wisdom of marrying academic findings with the insights accrued by local NGOs and institutions, thereby expanding the potential idea bank beyond the Eurocentric status quo that has tended to dominate the field.

Book Innovative Models for Sustainable Development in Emerging African Countries

Download or read book Innovative Models for Sustainable Development in Emerging African Countries written by Niccolò Aste and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores key issues and presents recent case studies in areas of importance for the transition to a circular model of development in emerging African countries that will minimize resource consumption and waste production. The topics covered include the development of sustainable housing models, energy and environmental issues in building design and technical systems, recycling for a sustainable future, models for humanitarian emergencies, and low-cost and web-based digital tools with applications in architecture and archaeology. The aim is to contribute to a necessary paradigm shift with respect to urban planning and usage of territories, moving from a linear urban metabolism based on the “take, make, dispose” approach to a circular metabolism. Such a change requires a focus on the relationship between the architectural, urban, and physical aspects of new developments, climate, and energy demand, as well as the identification and integration of strategies and infrastructures to achieve a high level of efficiency and self-sufficiency. The book will appeal to all with an interest in sustainable development in the African context.

Book Mozambique Country Water Resources Assistance Strategy

Download or read book Mozambique Country Water Resources Assistance Strategy written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozambique's continuous efforts to sustain economic growth and reduce poverty face a number of constraints including its economic and political history, and its geography and climatic conditions. It is widely accepted that future economic growth of the country will continue to rely on its natural resources base and, specifically, on sustainable use of land and water resources. Mozambique has plentiful land and water resources that provide great potential for the production of a variety of crops, livestock development and industrial growth. However, high climate variability resulting in frequent recurrent droughts and floods, limited water resources availability in the most developed southern part of the country, high dependency on international water resources and very limited water management infrastructure result in the economy being highly vulnerable to water shocks and water being a constraint on growth and poverty reduction. The development of Mozambique Country Water Resources Assistance Strategy (CWRAS) was complementary to the Bank Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) process supporting its approach and priorities. It is consistent with the country's development priorities as defined in Second Poverty Reduction Support Strategy (PARPA II) and the sector priorities identified in the national water resources management strategy. The CWRAS' recommendations build upon the Bank's specific strengths vis-a-vis other development donors and, at the same time, are expected to guide the engagement of development partners and promote donor coordination and cooperation in the Mozambique's water resources sector. The main objective of this CWRAS is to assist the Government of Mozambique in prioritizing water resources interventions based on an analysis of Mozambique's changing socio-economic circumstances, and the areas of possible Bank engagement over the next 3-5 years.
