As a Class-I city, located in the most populated state (Uttar Pradesh) of India, Aligarh has gained in importance due to its proximity to the national capital (New Delhi) and Uttar Pradesh’s industrial cities (Kanpur and Ghaziabad). The 2011 census showed that of the total population of the district, 33.1 per cent was urban (872,575 residents). Projections by the Town and Country Planning Department suggest that the city will have some 1.2 million inhabitants and there will be a need for another 64,000 houses. Thus, the city will expand extensively into its urban fringe, which is expected to entail large-scale transformations. The expansion of the city will significantly influence nearby villages in terms of land use and population, both physically and socio-economically.

Book excerpt: This chapter reviews current thinking about environment-development issues in the transitional zones between distinctly urban and unambiguously rural areas, known variously as rural-urban fringes/transition zones, or peri-urban zones/areas or interfaces (PUI). Such concerns reflect the growing real-world limitations of traditional concepts of a simple rural-urban dichotomy. Moreover, recent archaeological research suggests that these phenomena may have ancient antecedents. Present-day fringes/interfaces have become intimately bound up with notions of (more) sustainable urbanization and urban development, with different issues and agendas manifested in different geohistorical zones of urbanization. Following an overview of planning issues in (post)industrial societies, the chapter addresses the complexities of changing peri-urban production and livelihood systems in the context of rapid urbanization in poorer countries, distinctive peri-urban challenges of appropriate and flexible planning and development, and the future prospects for enhanced sustainability in this most challenging category of development-environment interfaces. Possibilities for mutual learning between geohistorical regions are also raised.

Book excerpt: Rural and urban development in sustainable context is a complex process that requires an improvement of the existing situation and a removing of the dysfunctions. Over time, the rural area was not addressed as much as urban area, rural analysis is often fragmentary explained and incomplete argued. The system of values owned by rural area is overshadowed by an economic, social and cultural subordination to the city. The connection that is established is a support for the systems analysis of settlements and is the consequence of the functional differentiation between cities and villages, evidenced by the natural, social and economic aspects representative for each system. Our research highlights the relationship, to the social, economic and cultural level, between the municipality of Piatra Neamţ and Gârcina commune, situated in proximity. The dependence of rural areas to the city is evident due to the very small distance between them, the existing phenomena causing significant changes in both sides. The population is an important indicator of sustainable development, the demographic relationship between urban and rural area consisting in take of labor resources and sources of supply organic food. The demographic, economic, administrative, educational, cultural and sanitary relations will be highlighted based on statistical data, through graphs and maps, their interpretation referring in the same time to the situation of county level. The partnership established between rural and urban areas lead to the development of urban system and a rural preservation, so new concepts of sustainable development is essential in the exploitation of local resources.
