Book The Local Economy Solution

Download or read book The Local Economy Solution written by Michael Shuman and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinventing economic development as if small business mattered In cities and towns across the nation, economic development is at a crossroads. A growing body of evidence has proven that its current cornerstone--incentives to attract and retain large, globally mobile businesses--is a dead end. Even those programs that focus on local business, through buy-local initiatives, for example, depend on ongoing support from government or philanthropy. The entire practice of economic development has become ineffective and unaffordable and is in need of a makeover. The Local Economy Solution suggests an alternative approach in which states and cities nurture a new generation of special kinds of businesses that help local businesses grow. These cutting-edge companies, which Shuman calls "pollinator businesses," are creating jobs and the conditions for future economic growth, and doing so in self-financing ways. Pollinator businesses are especially important to communities that are struggling to lift themselves up in a period of economic austerity, when municipal budgets are being slashed. They also promote locally owned businesses that increase local self-reliance and evince high labor and environmental standards. The book includes nearly two dozen case studies of successful pollinator businesses that are creatively facilitating business and neighborhood improvements, entrepreneurship, local purchasing, local investing, and profitable business partnerships. Examples include Main Street Genome (which provides invaluable data to improve local business performance), Supportland (which is developing a powerful loyalty card for local businesses), and Fledge (a business accelerator that finances itself through royalty payments). It also shows how the right kinds of public policy can encourage the spread of pollinator businesses at virtually no cost.

Book Democracy s Edge

  • Author : Frances Moore Lappe
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2005-10-28
  • ISBN : 0787983357

Download or read book Democracy s Edge written by Frances Moore Lappe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three out of five Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, feel our country is headed in the wrong direction. America is at the edge, a critical place at which we can either renew and revitalize or give in and lose that most precious American ideal--democracy--and along with it the freedom, fairness, and opportunities it assures. Democracy's Edge is a rousing battle cry that we can--and must--act now. From Jefferson to Eisenhower, presidents from both parties have warned us of the danger of letting a closed, narrow group of business and government officials concentrate power over our lives. Yet today, a small and unrepresentative group of people is making vital decisions for all of us. But this crisis is only a symptom, Lappé argues. It's a symptom of thin democracy, something done to us or for us, not by or with us. Such democracy is always at risk of being stolen by private interests or extremist groups, left and right. But there is a solution. The answer, says Lappé, is Living Democracy, a powerful yet often invisible citizens' revolution surging in communities across America. It's not random, disjointed activism but the emergence of a new historical stage of democracy in which Americans realize that democracy isn't something we have but something we do. Either we live it or lose it, says Lappé.

Book Make Teaching Sustainable

Download or read book Make Teaching Sustainable written by Paul Emerich France and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethink your teaching practice with six mindset shifts that will transform how you approach the job, ensuring that you can sustain your energy and effectiveness while empowering and supporting learners. Traditional approaches to the practice of teaching are unsustainable. Too many educators are disengaging, burning out, and leaving the profession in response to stressors both inside and outside of schools. And high teacher turnover has a negative effect on our students. In Make Teaching Sustainable, Paul Emerich France explores six mindset shifts that you can implement to improve your educational environment—while also supporting and empowering the students you lead: * Humanity over industry * Collectivism over individualism * Empowerment over control * Minimalism over maximalism * Process over product * Flexibility over fixedness The goal of sustainable teaching is not simply to have teachers do less work, but also to help focus efforts on effective, efficient, and meaningful practices that make learning richer for students. Guided by recent research and interviews with practitioners in the field, France explores how mindset and practice shifts interact with themes of healing, regeneration, vulnerability, partnership, ritual, and simplicity. He also outlines tangible benefits to sustainable teaching, from a reduction in burnout to an increase in student engagement with learning. Whether you're a teacher, coach, or administrator, Make Teaching Sustainable will inspire you to embark on a practicable, action-oriented path to sustainability, ensuring that you can continue to be nurtured, supported, and effective in the profession that you love.

Book Sustainability for the Nation

Download or read book Sustainability for the Nation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "sustainable society," according to one definition, "is one that can persist over generations; one that is far-seeing enough, flexible enough, and wise enough not to undermine either its physical or its social system of support." As the government sector works hard to ensure sufficient fresh water, food, energy, housing, health, and education for the nation without limiting resources for the future generations, it's clear that there is no sufficient organization to deal with sustainability issues. Each federal agency appears to have a single mandate or a single area of expertise making it difficult to tackle issues such as managing the ecosystem. Key resource domains, which include water, land, energy, and nonrenewable resources, for example, are nearly-completely connected yet different agencies exist to address only one aspect of these domains. The legendary ecologist John Muir wrote in 1911 that "when we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." Thus, in order for the nation to be successful in sustaining its resources, "linkages" will need to be built among federal, state, and local governments; nongovernmental organizations (NGOs); and the private sector. The National Research Council (NRC) was asked by several federal agencies, foundations, and the private sector to provide guidance to the federal government on issues related to sustainability linkages. The NRC assigned the task to as committee with a wide range of expertise in government, academia, and business. The committee held public fact-finding meetings to hear from agencies and stakeholder groups; examined sustainability management examples; conducted extensive literature reviews; and more to address the issue. Sustainability for the Nation: Resource Connection and Governance Linkages is the committee's report on the issue. The report includes insight into high-priority areas for governance linkages, the challenges of managing connected systems, impediments to successful government linkages, and more. The report also features examples of government linkages which include Adaptive Management on the Platte River, Philadelphia's Green Stormwater Infrastructure, and Managing Land Use in the Mojave.

Book The Hidden Connections

Download or read book The Hidden Connections written by Fritjof Capra and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2004-01-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fritjof Capra, bestselling author of The Tao of Physics and The Web of Life, here explores another frontier in the human significance of scientific ideas—applying complexity theory to large-scale social interaction. In the 1980s, complexity theory emerged as a powerful alternative to classic, linear thought. A forerunner of that revolution, Fritjof Capra now continues to expand the scope of that theory by establishing a framework in which we can understand and solve some of the most important issues of our time. Capra posits that in order to sustain life, the principles underlying our social institutions must be consistent with the broader organization of nature. Discussing pertinent contemporary issues ranging from the controversial practices of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to the Human Genome Project, he concludes with an authoritative, often provocative plan for designing ecologically sustainable communities and technologies as alternatives to the current economic globalization.

Book State of the World 2010

Download or read book State of the World 2010 written by Worldwatch Institute and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the environmental and social problems we face today are symptoms of a deeper systemic failing: a dominant cultural paradigm that encourages living in ways that are often directly counter to the realities of a finite planet. This paradigm, typically referred to as 'consumerism,' has already spread to cultures around the world and has led to consumption levels that are vastly unsustainable. If this pattern spreads further there will be little possibility of solving climate change or other environmental problems that are poised to dramatically disrupt human civilization. It will take a sustained, long-term effort to redirect the traditions, social movements and institutions that shape consumer cultures towards becoming cultures of sustainability. These institutions include schools, the media, businesses and governments. Bringing about a cultural shift that makes living sustainably as 'natural' as a consumer lifestyle is today will not only address urgent crises like climate change, it could also tackle other symptoms like extreme income inequity, obesity and social isolation that are not typically seen as environmental problems. State of the World 2010 paints a picture of what this sustainability culture could look like, and how we can - and already are - making the shift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social-Ecological Resilience and Sustainability by Shelley Ross Saxer and Jonathan Rosenbloom is designed to help students understand and address new, changing, and complex economic, environmental, and social systems. This book introduces resilience and sustainability as analytical frameworks and illustrates how these concepts apply in various contexts: water, food, shelter/land use, energy, natural resources, pollution, disaster law, and climate change. The first two chapters (Part I) provide students with a conceptual foundation to explore the interdisciplinary nature of resilience and sustainability and the meanings of, complexities embedded in, and the overlap and differences between these frameworks. Each of the remaining eight chapters (Part II) views resilience and sustainability in a specific law and policy context. Strategically placed throughout Part II, the authors describe eight useful tools — “Strategies to Facilitate Implementation”—to help identify, assess, integrate, or utilize resilience and sustainability as analytical frameworks. Key Features: A two-part approach that first provides students with a conceptual foundation and then allows students to view resilience and sustainability in eight law and policy contexts (described above) Numerous graphics throughout to illustrate concepts, depict events described, and otherwise enliven the content Case studies that examine human decisions that led to unsustainable and non-resilient systems and societies New and innovative ways to explain complex systems and in turn rethink traditional notions of law and policy

Book New Directions for University Museums

Download or read book New Directions for University Museums written by Brad King and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Directions for University Museums is intended to help university museum leaders to help them plan strategically in the context of the issues and needs of the 2020s by examining trends affecting them and directions in response to those forces. It will lay out a series of potential directions for university museums in the 21st century using examples from the field. Although university museums are similar to other museums in their topic areas (art, natural history, archaeology, etc.) they are a unique category that requires special consideration. Today university museums are grappling with new forces that are affecting their future: University museums still have a dual responsibility to campus and community, and they still try to mount exhibitions that are attractive to the communities in which they are embedded. But they are rethinking the nature of service to town and gown in response to larger trends around accessibility. It is no longer enough to try to attract visitors; these museums are becoming much more active and outgoing in their outreach to the broader public. They have unparalleled access to academic firepower, but university museum research is no longer the sole province of academics, intended for publication in scholarly journals. In the 2020s, research is being made much more relevant to existential problems of the world. For example, some are bridging the gap between academic research and teaching and the most pressing social issues of our time, such as climate change, the fight against racism and the interface between humans and technology. University museum research is no longer cloistered, and these institutions are finding ways to better leverage the new knowledge yielded by collections-based research for both the university’s and for public benefit. Student engagement and education is still important, but communication is no longer unidirectional (from faculty and museum staff to students). Now student input and co-curation is now invited as learning becomes a two-way street. Moreover, public science communication has become a much more important role for university museums. These are, in effect, the “new directions” to which the title refers. The main thesis of the book is therefore that university museums are becoming much more outward-facing. They are engaging with the public and with the world at large as never before. In effect, they matter more than ever. This is the overarching “new direction”. Within this general approach, there are a number of questions that the book addresses: What are the expectations of university museums in the 21st century from their key stakeholders – university administrations, faculties and students, and the communities in which they are embedded? How are those expectations changing and how are the museums evolving to meet them? How are university museums navigating the minefields of political polarization, “cancel culture” or heightened activism on campus and in society at large? What is the nature of the relationship between the university’s research and teaching mission and the university museum? What trends can we identify, and how can we help the university museum director navigate those trends? The university-donor relationship: what can we learn from a study of donor expectations and the dynamics of university-donor relationships in contemporary society? How is the relationship between the university museum and the broader external community changing? How is the university museum contributing to (or detracting from) the overall relationship between the university and the community? What role is the university museum playing in terms of public communication of research, especially public science communication? This book is for all those who work in, benefit from or are interested in university museums. In particular, it is hoped that the book will help university museum leaders who are embarking on strategic plans understand the common issues that are currently affecting their peers, and provide some context and guidance to those leaders as they chart their own paths for the future and to advance larger goals. For faculty, it will show how the museum can help improve undergraduate teaching and graduate student training via highlights and illustrations of new ways in which faculty departments are cooperating and partnering with their campus museums, and from a university administration point of view, how the museum can help the university achieve its bigger strategic goals (such as helping increase the percentage of successful faculty grant applications).
