Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Lake Sheridan Dam NDS ID Number PA 744 DER ID Number 66 45 Susquehanna River Basin Lake Sheridan Outlet Wyoming County Phase I Inspection Report written by KIMBALL (L ROBERT) AND ASSOCIATES EBENSBURG PA. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Sheridan Dam is a rubble masonary and concrete gravity dam. The dam is 89 feet long and 9 feet high. The intercore of the dam consists of the original rubble masonry construction. The concrete portion of the dam was added during the 1966 modifications. The dam consists of an overflow and a non-overflow section. The overflow section of the dam serves as the normal spillway for the reservoir. The crest length of the spillway is 40 feet. A reservoir drain valve is located on the upstream end of the right non-overflow section. In general, the dam appears to be in good condition. The spillway design flood for this dam is the 1/2 PMF to PMF. The spillway design flood was selected as the PMF (probable maximum flood) based on the downstream potential for loss of life and property damage. The spillway is capable of controlling only 2% of the PMF. Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed inadequate. Since Lake Sheridan Dam's non-overflow section consists of a concrete section over rubble masonry, the non-overflow section should be capable of safely controlling a partial overflow. However, the amount of overtopping that can be safely controlled is unknown. In this case the amount of overtopping is directly related to the structural stability of the dam. No visible seepage or other obvious deficiencies affecting the stability of the dam were noted during the inspection.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book The Geologic Story of the Uinta Mountains

Download or read book The Geologic Story of the Uinta Mountains written by Wallace Hansen and published by Falcon Guides. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other than the Brooks Range in Alaska, the Uintas are the most prominent east/west range in the United States. They also contain the highest mountains in Utah, many of which exceed 13,000 feet, including Kings Peak at 13,528 feet -- the highest point in Utah. There are well over 1,000 natural lakes and over 400 miles of streams in this 100-mile long range in northeastern Utah. While the intended scope of this book is fairly broad, the author presents the geologic story of the Uinta Mountains with a clarity and wit that gives this book a unique and popular appeal.
