Book excerpt: The study of soil erosion by water and the transfer of suspended solids from watersheds to rivers is crucial given the environmental and socio-economic issues with regards to growing human influence and the expected intensification of these processes under climate change. The objective of this thesis is to understand how rainfall variability controls the activation of different sediment source zones and the dynamics of hydro-sedimentary flows in two mesoscale Mediterranean catchments, i.e. the Claduègne (42 km2, subcatchment of the Ardèche) and the Galabre (20 km2 , subcatchment of the Durance) which are members of the OZCAR critical zone research infrastructure.In the first part, the contributions of the erosion zones to sediment fluxes at the outlet of the Claduègne catchment were quantified at high temporal resolution with a low-cost sediment fingerprinting approach. Two sets of tracers (Color and X-ray fluorescence tracers) and three mixing models were compared to assess the sensitivity of estimated source contributions to these methodological choices. Marly-calcareous badlands were identified as the main sediment source. A similar approach carried out on the Galabre catchment area showed that badlands on molasses were the main source. The comparison of tracer sets and mixing models, showed that the methodological choices generated important differences. Thus, we suggest a multi-tracer-multi-model ensemble approach to obtain more robust results. The application of this approach to a large number of sediment samples highlighted the important within and between event variability in the contributions of different sediment sources, raising questions about the hydro-sedimentary processes that cause this variability.We hypothesized that this variability resulted from variable suspended sediment transit time distributions governed by the interplay of (i) catchment characteristics such as the location of different sources and how they are linked to the outlet (referred to as structural sediment connectivity) and (ii) the spatio-temporal characteristics of rain events that activate and impact transfer velocities (i.e. functional connectivity).Thus, in the second part, a distributed numerical model based on the resolution of Saint Venant equations coupled to a multi-source erosion module was used to evaluate the respective roles of structural and functional connectivity. Sensitivity analysis of the discretization and parameterization choices (i.e. threshold of contributing drainage area to identify the river network, values of roughness coefficients on hillslopes and the river) showed that the location of the sediment sources in the watershed was more important than the modeling choices when the parameters were limited to realistic range. A general temporal pattern of source contributions was observed. This was consistent with the results of the fingerprinting approach and the distribution of distances from the sources to the river and the outlet. The same pattern persists for different rainfall durations or intensities but became much more variable when bimodal hyetographs or spatially variable precipitation was applied. In addition, the location of the rainfall with respect to the sources determined the average contributions of the sources and thus differences between rainfall events.The two approaches, sediment fingerprinting and numerical modeling, were found to complement each other and their combined application has a high potential for understanding how interactions between structural and functional connectivity control the dynamics of sediment fluxes in mesoscale catchments.

Book excerpt: Current research on runoff and erosion processes, as well as an increasing demand for sustainable watershed management emphasize the need for an improved understanding of sediment dynamics. This involves the accurate assessment of erosion rates and sediment transfer, yield and origin. A variety of methods exist to capture these processes at the catchment scale. Among these, sediment fingerprinting, a technique to trace back the origin of sediment, has attracted increasing attention by the scientific community in recent years. It is a two-step procedure, based on the fundamental assumptions that potential sources of sediment can be reliably discriminated based on a set of characteristic 'fingerprint' properties, and that a comparison of source and sediment fingerprints allows to quantify the relative contribution of each source. This thesis aims at further assessing the potential of spectroscopy to assist and improve the sediment fingerprinting technique. Specifically, this work focuses on (1) whether potential sediment sources can be reliably identified based on spectral features ('fingerprints'), whether (2) these spectral fingerprints permit the quantification of relative source contribution, and whether (3) in situ derived source information is sufficient for this purpose. Furthermore, sediment fingerprinting using spectral information is applied in a study catchment to (4) identify major sources and observe how relative source contributions change between and within individual flood events. And finally, (5) spectral fingerprinting results are compared and combined with simultaneous sediment flux measurements to study sediment origin, transport and storage behaviour. For the sediment fingerprinting approach, soil samples were collected from potential sediment sources within the Isábena catchment, a meso-scale basin in the central Spanish Pyrenees. Undisturbed samples of the upper soil layer were measured in situ using an ASD spectroradiometer and subsequently sampled for measurements in the laboratory. Suspended sediment was sampled automatically by means of ISCO samplers at the catchment as well as at the five major subcatchment outlets during flood events, and stored fine sediment from the channel bed was collected from 14 cross-sections along the main river. Artificial mixtures of known contributions were produced from source soil samples. Then, all source, sediment and mixture samples were dried and spectrally measured in the laboratory. Subsequently, colour coefficients and physically based features with relation to organic carbon, iron oxide, clay content and carbonate, were calculated from all in situ and laboratory spectra. Spectral parameters passing a number of prerequisite tests were submitted to principal component analyses to study natural clustering of samples, discriminant function analyses to observe source differentiation accuracy, and a mixing model for source contribution assessment. In addition, annual as well as flood event based suspended sediment fluxes from the catchment and its subcatchments were calculated from rainfall, water discharge and suspended sediment concentration measurements using rating curves and Quantile Regression Forests. Results of sediment flux monitoring were interpreted individually with respect to storage behaviour, compared to fingerprinting source ascriptions and combined with fingerprinting to assess their joint explanatory potential. In response to the key questions of this work, (1) three source types (land use) and five spatial sources (subcatchments) could be reliably discriminated based on spectral fingerprints. The artificial mixture experiment revealed that while (2) laboratory parameters permitted source contribution assessment, (3) the use of in situ derived information was insufficient. Apparently, high discrimination accuracy does not necessarily imply good quantification results. When applied to suspended sediment samples of the catchment outlet, the spectral fingerprinting approach was able to (4) quantify the major sediment sources: badlands and the Villacarli subcatchment, respectively, were identified as main contributors, which is consistent with field observations and previous studies. Thereby, source contribution was found to vary both, within and between individual flood events. Also sediment flux was found to vary considerably, annually as well as seasonally and on flood event base. Storage was confirmed to play an important role in the sediment dynamics of the studied catchment, whereas floods with lower total sediment yield tend to deposit and floods with higher yield rather remove material from the channel bed. Finally, a comparison of flux measurements with fingerprinting results highlighted the fact that (5) immediate transport from sources to the catchment outlet cannot be assumed. A combination of the two methods revealed different aspects of sediment dynamics that none of the techniques could have uncovered individually. In summary, spectral properties provide a fast, non-destructive, and cost-efficient means to discriminate and quantify sediment sources, whereas, unfortunately, straight-forward in situ collected source information is insufficient for the approach. Mixture modelling using artificial mixtures permits valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of the method and similar experiments are strongly recommended to be performed in the future. Book excerpt: Abstract: Suspended sediment transport, dominating material export from lowland river systems, is highly variable in space and time. Since suspended sediment transport can have adverse effects on human infrastructure, targeted management is imperative. To achieve this, a thorough understanding of suspended sediment dynamics is needed, but requires long-term monitoring data. Despite studies investigating suspended sediment dynamics on decadal time scales, an assessment of the spatio-temporal variability across adjacent river catchments is still lacking. To fill this gap, we analyse suspended sediment transport at twelve stations along German upland rivers, monitored on a daily basis for 28 to 54 years. All monitoring stations belong to the Rhine (Lahn, Lippe, Main, and Neckar) and Weser river systems (Fulda, Leine, Werra, and Weser) and have contributing areas between 2500 and 22,000 km2. Although located in comparable topo-climatic settings, average sediment yield for the monitoring period varied more than fourfold. Covering the range of 5.9 to 28.7 t km−2 yr−1, we found the highest and lowest suspended sediment yields for the Neckar and Lippe catchments, respectively. Using two different streamflow separation approaches, we estimated the contribution of stormflow discharge to total sediment transport to fall between 73 and 85 % in the Neckar and Lahn rivers while remaining ~15 % lower for the remaining catchments. Investigating the relevance of extreme events, we found the share of total suspended sediment load transported during the ten largest events to vary between ~28 % for the Neckar and ~8 % for the Lippe and Werra catchments. These events were predominantly characterized by clockwise hysteresis loops that hint to in-channel reworking as a significant material source, with the exception of the Neckar stations where anti-clockwise hysteresis patterns prevailed. Here, the hysteresis analysis indicates sediment delivery from more distant sources in the headwater regions, likely related to elevated rainfall intensities and the susceptibility of the escarpment of the Swabian Alb towards landsliding. We conclude that the combined effect of varying rainfall amounts and intensities, the fraction of steeper slopes as well as lithological differences explain the across-catchment variability on multiple time scales that is further modulated by river management practices

Book excerpt: A study of downstream suspended sediment transport dynamics in the West River at Cape Bounty, Melville Island, Nunavut, was undertaken in 2012. The first component of the research quantified the sediment mobilized in the West River during the 2012 season. A nival bed-contact survey was undertaken to identify areas of the river in which stream flow was isolated from the bed, and was combined with a reach-based sediment budget approach to assess sediment entrainment and downstream movement. This analysis revealed the propensity of the West River to store suspended sediment through much of the season. Permafrost disturbances in 2007 inundated the West River with fine sediments, the majority of which are progressing from the headwaters as a sediment slug that is subject to substantial downstream storage. Diurnal and event hysteresis analysis from 2004-2012 demonstrate the change in sediment delivery inter-annually, transitioning from a system characterized by clockwise hysteresis prior to the 2007 disturbances, to counter-clockwise hysteresis post 2007. The latter is reflective of the important contribution of the headwater sediment slug from disturbance to downstream sediment transport and common net sediment storage in the lower reaches of the river. The second project studied the delivery of suspended sediment following late season major rainfall events (MRE) and the control antecedent catchment conditions prior to rainfall exert on the magnitude of stream runoff and suspended sediment transport. Two MREs on July 9 and July 23, totalling 35.4 and 10.6 mm, respectively, resulted in exceptionally low discharge response and sediment mobilization. Analysis of synoptic level pressure patterns and catchment soil moisture revealed low volumetric water content preceding both MREs, a result of sustained exceptional early summer warmth under stable regional high pressure. Compared to similar MREs in 2007-2009, the soil in 2012 did not become saturated, and substantial runoff did not occur. These studies contribute to an understanding of the processes of sediment transport in response to disturbances, rainfall, and antecedent catchment conditions, all of which are becoming important components of the Arctic fluvial systems but have had limited study due to the emphasis on snow melt processes and hydrological fluxes.

Hydrometerological conditions and sediment transport were measured over three seasons in order to characterize suspended sediment transport and grain size characteristics in relation to catchment and channel snowpack. Catchment snow water equivalence was measured at the beginning of the season, and discharge, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and grain size were measured at high temporal resolution through the runoff period to evaluate diurnal-, event- and seasonal-scale discharge-suspended sediment and grain size hysteresis. In addition, two models of a time-integrated suspended sediment trap, modified from Philips et al. (2000), were deployed in both streams to assess the representativeness of the captured sediment. The West stream discharge was dominated by the snowmelt peak in all three seasons. From 54-96% of suspended sediment was transported during this short period, although hysteresis relationships indicate that delivery of sediment and water were not synchronous and interannual relationships suggest disproportionate increases in sediment discharge with increased catchment snowpack. Clockwise and counter-clockwise suspended sediment hysteresis relationships were apparent and associated with lesser and greater snowpack, respectively. Additionally, grain size hysteresis suggested variable sediment sources during the season. Assessment of the time-integrated suspended sediment trap in the East and West streams illustrated that the captured material was not representative of the ambient stream conditions.
