Book excerpt: Los Angeles-based photographer Susan Burnstine's (born 1966) Absence of Beingis a haunting, intensely personal and yet extremely universal exploration of the subconscious world, which began with her highly praised first monograph, Within Shadows. Burnstine captures images that purge her dreams. Finding no existing camera that could create what her mind envisioned, she began to experiment with building her own and molding her own lenses until she arrived at the prototype for the handmade cameras she continues to use. The results are instantly recognizable black-and-white images, which have been described as 21st-century impressionism. Burnstine does not use any of the post-production tools available in today's digital environment. All of the effects one sees in a Burnstine photograph are created in the camera at the time of exposure of the negative.

Book Fleeting Reflections

Download or read book Fleeting Reflections written by Mike Curry and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sense of energy at Canary Wharf is palpable; it's not a place that is often associated with quiet contemplation. Yet pausing for a moment reveals real beauty and softness alongside the corporate architecture. The patterns and colors can be mesmerizing like a kaleidoscope as they change with the light and weather. With so much activity all around, capturing these colorful images requires a focus that isn't immediately obvious to passersby. Curry can spend hours at a time examining one body of water, and the more he watches the more he sees. The images in this book are inspired by his childhood fascinations with kaleidoscopes and Spirograph and being captivated by the endless variation of colors and shapes. The photos may seem like they have been manipulated or created in Photoshop but they appear in this book as they did in nature, as beautiful fleeting reflections.

Book excerpt: Things We Remember, Maura Sullivan's first monograph, invites viewers into the mysterious, elegant, and compelling world that the New York City-based photographer creates. By composing and integrating her subjects into atmospheric locations suffused with natural light, Sullivan's analog black and white photographs seem to recall a lost time, a summoning from the past, a look beyond the surface, a revelation of the inner world. Each of the 70 eloquently sequenced and richly reproduced duotone plates in this volume tells its own story, conjuring deeply embedded memories and lost dreams. Yet as a collection, a larger, almost cinematic or literary narrative unfolds, leaving room for each viewer to reflect upon the work in their own way. In the end, Things We Remember is a captivating testament to Sullivan's photographic artistry that further reveals itself with each repeated viewing, offering a spellbinding window into her extraordinary and poetic world.

Book Andy Warhol Liz

Download or read book Andy Warhol Liz written by and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Warhol’s iconic portraits of Elizabeth Taylor are images that have lost none of their explosive power in the decades that separate the present from the moment of their making. Frequently hailed as the greatest movie star of all time, Elizabeth Taylor was a friend of Andy Warhol in the 1970s and 1980s. The personification of charisma, whose highly public life was charged with drama, tragedy, and romance, this iconic muse was a perfect vehicle for Warhol’s vivid silk-screen portraiture derived from press clippings, publicity shots, and film stills. Warhol made over fifty portraits of Taylor in all her incarnations—from the ethereally beautiful child actress in National Velvet to the commanding, voluptuous screen goddess of Cleopatra. Andy Warhol: Liz sheds light on the relationship between Warhol and one of his most notorious muses.

Book Ellsworth Kelly

Download or read book Ellsworth Kelly written by Ellsworth Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings of Ellsworth Kelly (born 1923) are famous for their hard edges, minimalist abstraction and above all, their bright, vibrant colors. Less known are the black-and-white drawings, collages and paintings that preceded or accompanied many of them, despite the fact that they make up roughly 20 percent of his total output. Ellsworth Kelly: Black & White and the exhibition it accompanies bring together the artist's color-free work for the first time, and offer a fresh take on his long career, emphasizing his use of shape, contrast, texture and his incorporation of such everyday objects as a broken windowpane, a handrail shadow or the leaf of a plant into his abstraction. This catalogue makes clear that the scale of contrast between black and white was key to Kelly's artistic self-discovery and subsequent development, and is crucial to any proper understanding of his oeuvre.

Book The Rest Between Two Notes

Download or read book The Rest Between Two Notes written by and published by Unicorn. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By integrating her contemporary photography with historical periods and various settings from around the world, Forman creates a world of illusion; upon closer inspection, what appears ordinary suggests an underlying tension and an aura of mystery. Expressed in the diffused colors of twilight and chiaroscruro, her images blur the boundaries between photography, late Renaissance painting, and film noir.Forman's photo-paintings explore those liminal and in-between moments - of coming and leaving, innocence and confidence, shadow and light, night and day, absence and connection, loss and longing, and not quite the past and not yet the future. Portals, both real and metaphorical, frequent her layered, complex and often dark dreamlike images. Her work is recognized for imbuing each image with strong, harmonious compositions and for her explosive use of color, light and shadow. As a cinematographer writes a narrative with movement and sound, Forman writes with still images, where the images have no power except through their position and relationship. It is these relationships that elicit emotions of desire, vulnerability, and a desperate longing for connection.Between Two Notes will feature over 100 images, insterspersed with comments from a diverse group of admirers.
