Download or read book Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage How to Strengthen the Capabilities of the Nation Preventing Severe Cascading Impacts on Critical Sectors Like written by U. S. Military and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contents: Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage: How to Strengthen the Capabilities of the Nation * 2019 U.S. Intelligence Community Worldwide Threat Assessment. The nation has steadily improved its ability to respond to major disasters and the power outages that often result. But increasing threats-whether severe natural disasters, cyber-physical attacks, electromagnetic events, or some combination-present new challenges for protecting the national power grid and recovering quickly from a catastrophic power outage. The President's National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC) was tasked to examine the nation's ability to respond to and recover from a catastrophic power outage of a magnitude beyond modern experience, exceeding prior events in severity, scale, duration, and consequence. Simply put, how can the nation best prepare for and recover from a catastrophic power outage, regardless of the cause?Executive Summary * Introduction: What the Nation Faces * Recommendations and Supporting Findings * Moving Forward: A Call to Action * Appendix A: Acknowledgements * Appendix B: Study Methodology * Appendix C: Definitions to Frame the Study * Appendix D: Government Authorities, Processes, and Roles * Appendix E: Sector Interdependencies * Appendix F: Individual and Community Preparedness Efforts * Appendix G: Lessons Learned from 2017 Disasters * Appendix H: ReferencesAfter interviews with dozens of senior leaders and experts and an extensive review of studies and statutes, we found that existing national plans, response resources, and coordination strategies would be outmatched by a catastrophic power outage. This profound risk requires a new national focus. Significant public and private action is needed to prepare for and recover from a catastrophic outage that could leave large parts of the nation without power for weeks or months, and cause service failures in other sectors- including water and wastewater, communications, transportation, healthcare, and financial services-that are critical to public health and safety and our national and economic security. The United States should respond to this problem in two overarching ways: 1) design a national approach to prepare for, respond to, and recover from catastrophic power outages that provides the federal guidance, resources, and incentives needed to take action across all levels of government and industry and down to communities and individuals; and 2) improve our understanding of how cascading failures across critical infrastructure will affect restoration and survival. There are a number of ongoing initiatives in both the public and private sector that are in line with our recommendations. We urge the continued advancement of these initiatives in conjunction with our recommendations.

Book Integrated Water Resource Management

Download or read book Integrated Water Resource Management written by Neil S. Grigg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the enormous global challenge of providing balanced and sustainable solutions to urgent water problems. The author explores our dependence on access to safe water and other water-related services and how driving forces of the human and natural worlds are degrading this access. The greatest challenges involve conflicts between people and interest groups across all countries, as well as the economic and political difficulties in finding solutions through infrastructure development. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to Integrated Water Resources Management or IWRM, which provides a set of tools for policy development, planning and organization, assessment, systems analysis, finance, and regulation. The author suggests that IWRM is challenging because of the human element, but that no other process can reconcile the conflicting agendas involved with water management. The broad range of topics covered here, as well as 25 case summaries, will be of interest to scientists, engineers, practitioners, and advanced level students interested in the integrated management of water as a resource.

Book Grid Down Water Survival Guide

Download or read book Grid Down Water Survival Guide written by Morgan Carpenter and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power grid collapses, and with it, all source of running water cease working. In the blink of an eye, you can no longer access clean drinking water out of your kitchen or bathroom faucets. Now what do you do? How do you stay hydrated? How do you get water for showering, cooking food, and watering your gardens and crops? Most individuals are simply unprepared and unaware of the potential consequences of an EMP attack or solar flare occurring over the United States, or any other kind of a major disaster (such as a cyberattack ) that causes the power grid to collapse. I want you to imagine a world where the power grid is no longer operational and electronic devices have ceased to work. Perhaps the most critical convenience of modern life that would be severely impacted in this scenario is running water. I say most critical, because we all know that our bodies can only survive for a maximum of three days without water...and sometimes even less. Water is life, and without it, we cannot survive no matter how well prepared we are otherwise. That's why your disaster preparedness plan must be prepared for a world without running water, and that's exactly what I want to focus on in this book. There are three big priorities you need to have when it comes to your water preparedness plans for an off-grid disaster scenario. First, you need to have a strong stockpile of water that you can turn to for when the water from your sinks stops running. Second, you need a way to resupply yourself with more water via water harvesting systems that you can set up at home. This is because it doesn't matter how much water you have stockpiled, eventually you might run out before the running water returns, . And thirdly, you need to have the systems in place to purify all new water you collect and harvest to ensure that it is absolutely safe to drink. That's because drinking water that's not purified can sometimes be more dangerous than drinking no water at all. It's these priorities, among some secondary ones, that I'll be covering at length in this book. I've spent most of my adult life dedicated to self-sufficiency and preparedness for extreme crises, and my family and I have spent the last eleven years specifically doing everything we can to ensure that we are ready for any extreme grid down disaster that comes our way. While we're fortunate to live on an off-grid homestead where we are totally reliant on our own water systems, most people are living on-grid and are totally dependent on the water that comes out of their faucets. If this is you, and if you want to become more self-sufficient and prepared when it comes to water, then I would encourage you to read on. I can tell you from firsthand experience that making sure you have stored plenty of water safely and set up the systems to replenish your water source is one of the most important aspects of disaster preparedness...and also one of the most difficult. That's because there is so much that can go wrong, from your stockpile of water getting contaminated to your rainwater harvesting system failing and other things that can imperil your water preparedness plans. I'm here to tell you exactly what you need to do so you can avoid making some of the mistakes that I made and to ensure that you and your family have a strong water stockpile and a reliable means of replenishing and purifying that stockpile.
