Book excerpt: The research work is divided into two focus areas namely: cellular networks and vehicular networks. The first part of the research work is in cellular networks. Cellular network design and operation must incorporate disaster response and repair scenarios. Requirements for high reliability and low latency often fail to incorporate network survivability for mission-critical services. This work defines a practical modeling approach using a Markov chain Matrix Exponential (ME) model. This model is scalable for larger networks, calculates the restoration and network availability times, consists of asymptotic approximations to estimate network availability, and determines the optimal number of repair crews required. This ME model shows how survivable networks can be designed based on controlling numbers of crews, times taken for individual repair stages in the repair process, and the balance between fast and slow repairs. In the second part, different aspects of vehicular networks have been analyzed for emergency vehicle purposes. Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) have been an important part of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Due to the highly dynamic nature of the network, it can support some safety-critical applications such as providing network capabilities to emergency vehicles, avoiding crashes involving emergency vehicles, etc. In this part of the research work, a simulation approach has been discussed to evaluate an ambulance transit using VANET capabilities. The simulation is performed using ns3/SUMO/TraCI software tools and four different scenarios are formulated. These scenarios differ by the nature of the network being implemented and additional functionalities like re-evaluating the route added to the ambulance or other cars on the road network. Performance metrics like delay, packet drop ratio, the average speed of the ambulance, average vehicle density, ambulance message interval time are evaluated, and the results are presented. Developing a reliable network for vehicle-to-vehicle communication is a crucial part of network deployment. In this third part of the research work, we discuss a layered approach towards the reliability of VANETs. This work will consider different layers of the dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) protocol stack and discuss key reliability indicators in each layer. This layered approach towards computing reliability results in more practical probability calculations. We also discuss different techniques to increase the reliability of VANETs. A functional reliability (FR) calculation is also presented to implement the multi-layered reliability context.

Book excerpt: Vehicular networks (VANETs) have distinctive structures that distinguish them in comparison to general mobile ad hoc networks. In this thesis we identify the relevant special structures that do exist, and show how they can be exploited to design a MAC layer that provides better performance than a MAC layer designed without taking such structures into account. Particular important examples of the structures in VANETs are: (i) Periodic broadcast is the common transmission pattern due to the requirements of vehicular safety applications; (ii) GPS is available on nodes; (iii) Node mobility is constrained along one-dimensional roadways, and traffic can only move in one of the two directions of each roadway; and (iv) Traffic moving on one lane in one direction of a road has group mobility. These structures offer unique exploitable opportunities for building specific protocols tailored to VANETs which perform better than other general purpose protocols designed for structureless networks. We will show that, at the MAC layer, these structures can be thoroughly exploited to design a protocol based on dynamic TDMA that is well suited for VANETs. We present the Dynamic Channel Partition and Reservation (DCPR) Protocol, which is a specific VANET MAC protocol designed for operating a dynamic TDMA mechanism in a way robust to vehicular mobility, by dynamically partitioning the set of TDMA channels for the use of vehicles according to their different velocities. DCPR also enhances the basic dynamic TDMA mechanism with features for proper operation in a wireless environment with fading. We evaluate DCPR with simulations via ns-2 and VanetMobiSim, using the Intelligent Driver Model with Lane Changing. Our simulation results show that DCPR achieves packet loss rates which are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those obtained by IEEE 802.11p at various vehicle densities and in different vehicular traffic environments. Moreover, DCPR increases goodput by a factor as high as nine in a wireless environment with fading compared to a basic dynamic TDMA protocol. With regard to variations in vehicular traffic, DCPR maintains stable performance across all levels of traffic asymmetry in a highway scenario. Based on the systematic exploitation of group mobility, we are led to suggest an overarching design based on the Velocity Differentiated Dynamic Channel Partition (VDDCP) Mechanism. In the scenarios we have evaluated, DCPR equipped with the VDDCP mechanism performs as well as the original DCPR, and further evaluation is required to determine if there are other scenarios of vehicular traffic geometries and intensities in which the VDDCP mechanism delivers significantly better performance. To summarize, DCPR shows the possibility of building a MAC layer for VANETs that provides high packet delivery rate, supporting the development of vehicular safety applications that demand reliability.

Book excerpt: Enabling communication among vehicles can facilitate the deployment of safety applications that can improve driving safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities. Assessing the reliability of these safety applications is essential to evaluating VANETs' contributions to improved safety and driving conditions. In this context, I maintain that reliability metrics that express the requirements of safety applications in terms of network performance are much more suitable than standalone network-level metrics, as the latter do not indicate whether the requirements of safety applications can be met. This work considers awareness as an intermediate layer between the application and the network layers, for identifying the different levels of reliability achievable by the different safety applications. Through a comprehensive simulation study, this work analyzes the level of awareness that networks can offer under various scenarios and a wide range of influencing parameters, including transmission power, message generation rate, vehicular density, message size, as well as radio propagation and fading effects. Insights are provided on how network performance metrics address application requirements and contribute to enhancing the reliability of safety applications. Finally, communication parameters necessary to offering high levels of reliability are determined for three representative safety-application requirements.

In addition, the desire to use networks already in existence has created motivation for using cellular networks for vehicular applications. LTE-Advanced is one of the most promising access technologies in the wireless field, providing high data rate, low latency, and a large coverage area. Thus, LTE/LTE-A can be potential access technologies for supporting vehicular applications. Vehicular safety applications are based on broadcasting messages to neighboring vehicles. The vehicle location precision is crucial for safety applications. Thus, the freshness of the information (i.e. vehicle location) at the neighboring vehicles is very important. As LTE is an infrastructure-based network, all transmissions should pass through it. When the load of the network is high compared to the available resources, large delays may occur. The focus of this thesis is to propose solutions to make LTE suitable for vehicular safety applications. The first solution is to adapt the vehicular safety application to be suitable in LTE network. For this purpose, we propose an adaptation of the safety message generation rate. This adaptation uses a queueing model to compute the freshness of the information of vehicles at the destination, based on their message generation rates. It then adjusts the generation periods to provide a similar accuracy for all vehicles. The second approach is to modify the LTE and make it suitable for these kinds of applications. Thus, we proposed a scheduler for LTE which is suitable for vehicular safety applications. It considers the speed and location of the vehicles to allocate the resources to them for the transmission of safety messages. We also studied the message dissemination in the downlink, and proposed an efficient way to deliver the safety messages to the neighboring vehicles. Finally, we propose a scheme that uses both LTE-D2D and LTE-cellular communication for the transmission of safety messages. The centralized location information is used for Device-to-Device (D2D) pair discovery and resource allocation. The proposed scheme provides resource efficiency by enabling the reuse of the resources by vehicles. We also study the effect of the awareness range and period of updating location information at the server on resource usage and accuracy of D2D pair detection.

The optimization of system performance has become critically important both in terms of practical utility and commercial viability, and presents a rich area for research. In the editors' previous work on traditional wired networks, we have observed that designing low cost, survivable telecommunication networks involves extremely complicated processes. Commercial products available to help with this task typically have been based on simulation and/or proprietary heuristics. As demonstrated in this book, however, mathematical programming deserves a prominent place in the designer's toolkit. Convenient modeling languages and powerful optimization solvers have greatly facilitated the implementation of mathematical programming theory into the practice of commercial network design. These points are equally relevant and applicable in today’s world of wireless network technology and design. But there are new issues as well: many wireless network design decisions, such as routing and facility/element location, must be dealt with in innovative ways that are unique and distinct from wired (fiber optic) networks.
