Book Mexacarbate and Bacillus Thuringiensis for Control of Pine Butterfly Infestations

Download or read book Mexacarbate and Bacillus Thuringiensis for Control of Pine Butterfly Infestations written by Jerald E. Dewey and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerial application of mexacarbate and Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner was tested against pine butterfly, Neophasia menapia (F. and F.). These were applied to 40-acre plots on the Bitterroot National Forest and adjacent State and private lands during June 1973. Two concentrations of each material were tested; these were 0.15 and 0.30 pound per acre of mexacarbate, and 0.5 and 1.0 pound of B. thuringiensis per acre. Both concentrations of mexacarbate caused pine butterfly population reductions of near 97 percent and B. thuringiensis provided 73 percent reduction at the • 0.5 pound rate and 92 percent at the 1.0 pound rate. Natural decline of late instar larval population precluded an evaluation of differences in degree of defoliation between treated and untreated areas.

Book Biology and Control of the Western Pine Beetle

Download or read book Biology and Control of the Western Pine Beetle written by John Martin Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology and Control of the Western Pine Beetle: A Summary of the First Fifty Years of Research This beetle undoubtedly was a factor in the ecology of ponderosa pine stands long before it became known to science. Pine stands that approached maturity were thinned by beetle epidemics, and new trees grew up to replace those that were killed. But, as long as Indians used the forest only for hunting grounds and the first white men were interested only in trapping and livestock ranching, no one cared what happened to the trees. The beetle was of no economic importance until the advent of the lumber industry. Then, as the realization developed that the supply of virgin pine stumpage was limited and that the beetle was hastening exhaustion of the old stands, the western pine beetle became a problem of great importance. The beetle upset logging programs and short ened the life of sawmill communities because it often became active in the woods before loggers reached the timber. It killed the very trees that the lumberman preferred to cut and mill into high quality lumber. Its work earned it the epithet The Pine Beetle Logging Company. Book Insect Enemies of California Pines and Their Control Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Enemies of California Pines and Their Control Classic Reprint written by F. P. Keen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Enemies of California Pines and Their Control While much of the information contained in this circular has been previously published in a number of miscellaneous government bulletins, state bulletins, entomological journals and textbooks, most of these are either out of print or are not easily obtained by the interested timber owner. In addition, a great deal of new material, including unpublished notes of the author and other forest entomological workers, has been included, in order to bring the information up to date and give the timber owners and foresters the benefit of results obtained in recent investigations and control experiments. The descriptions of the insects and their work are grouped, as far as possible, according to the natural relationships of the insects, while the groups themselves are arranged in order of their importance in the forest. The host lists and keys to the work enable the forester to find any particular insect from the standpoint of the tree and part of the tree affected. Natural-sized photographs have been used wherever possible, as it was felt that these would be of the most assistance to the layman in recognizing the destructive species. In order to do this it was necessary, in nearly every case, to take original photographs. Published pictures or those furnished by other workers have been acknowledged in the text.
