It is known that communication deficits in individuals with autism may persist throughout the lifespan. However, there is a paucity of information in the literature pertaining to the communication needs of adolescents and young adults with autism. To meet the complex needs of these individuals, transition plans and programs must be improved. One way in which transition programs can be improved is by incorporating evidence based assessment and intervention methods designed for this population that target communication skills. Caregivers (n=68) of adolescents and young adults with autism anonymously completed a survey pertaining to outcomes, goals, and communication skills. Outcomes for the young adults were mostly poor and communication skill performance was variable. Results revealed that overall, caregivers perceived some communication skills to be more important than others. Caregivers rated the importance of communication skills differently depending on the social goals of the individual with autism. Results achieved significance for the relationship between developmental language level and the perceived importance of certain communication skills. Findings demonstrate that specific communication skills should be assessed and targeted during transitional planning for individuals with autism.

Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social-communication, and restricted, repetitive and stereotypical patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. There is a paucity of research about the adult population as the vast majority of research into ASD has focused on children and adolescents. As impairments in social-communication are integral to ASD speech-language pathologists (SLP) have a pivotal role to play in the assessment and intervention of adults with ASD in an effort to optimize their independence and productive participation. This study focuses on the communicative profile of adults with ASD who are considered highfunctioning (i.e. those without intellectual disability; HFASD). Impairments in social communication, also known as pragmatics, are defining criteria for ASD. Although specific pragmatic problems have been noted in adults with HFASD, the full extent of their pragmatic difficulty remains undocumented, largely because there are few comprehensive assessment tools. Difficulties with syntax and vocabulary also have been reported, but since findings are mixed, it is not clear whether young adults with HFASD have difficulties in these language domains. In addition, our standardized test instruments may not be sufficiently sensitive to detect subtle difficulties with sophisticated syntax. If so, in conversation, adults with HFASD might exhibit problems in vocabulary and grammar that influence listeners' impressions, but that would not be detected by a standardized test. The objectives of this study were to determine, in comparison to a control group, whether subtle communication impairments of young adults with HFASD would be detected by formal language assessments and/or language sample analysis. The language sample was derived from a simulated employment interview. Performance on the Communication Checklist-Adult (CC-A) and the Nonliteral Language and Pragmatic Judgment subtests from the Communication Assessment of Spoken Language (CASL) was expected to reveal deficits in pragmatic skill, while difficulties in syntax or vocabulary on the Test of Adolescent and Adult Language - 4 (TOAL-4) were not expected. Language sample analysis was expected to reveal subtle differences in language that were not revealed on the conventional assessments. Twenty adults with ASD were compared to 20 controls. Groups did not significantly differ on sex, nonverbal abilities and educational level. A standardized test battery was administered and a simulated job interview with a professional recruitment consultant was conducted to generate a language sample. Transcripts of the language samples were used to generate indices of pragmatics (Pragmatic Rating Scale, PRS), vocabulary (e.g., lexical diversity, lexical sophistication and word errors), and syntax (e.g. mean length of utterance and subordination index). Pragmatics: On the CASL, the average standard score of participants with HFASD was significantly lower than the mean standard score of the controls. Even so, the mean subtest standard scores for the HFASD group were still within normal limits. Scores on the CC-A though, clearly indicated impairment. Results from the language sample, using the PRS also indicated impairment in the HFASD in comparison to the control group. Language sample analysis also revealed that the average length of the interviews was longer for the HFASD group than the controls and included more within- and between- utterance pauses. Syntax and Vocabulary: On the TOAL-4, adults with HFASD had significantly more difficulty with the Sentence Combining subtest than controls although the mean score for the HFASD group was within normal limits. No differences were found on the TOAL-4 for vocabulary, but the language sample revealed that the group with HFASD made a higher proportion of word level errors than controls. For these adults with HFASD, most standard scores on the traditional standardized language tests were within normal limits but language sample analysis and the informant measure identified pragmatic language impairments, social dysfunction, and vocabulary problems. Our findings revealed subtle differences in communicative quality that may have a negative impact on conversational partners. These results may help explain why adults with HFASD sometimes fail to advance beyond a job interview, despite being well-qualified.

Our program staff has been privileged to respond to this commitment by developing and providing the needed services, and to engage in research informed by our clinical experience. Although many of the problems con cerning these developmentally disabled children remain to be solved, substantial progress has been made during this past decade of collabo ration among professionals, parents, and their government representa tives. The TEACCH staff has resolved to mark the effectiveness of this collaboration by holding a series of annual conferences focused on the several major issues confronting these children and their families. The conferences are held in order to bring together the best research knowl edge available to us from throughout the country, and to encourage par ticipation by the different professional disciplines and concerned parents. In addition these annual meetings form the basis for a series of books based on the conference theme. Book excerpt: Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of social communication interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism when delivered via telepractice. Method: Three research databases were searched, yielding four studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria were published journal articles with adolescent or young adult participants with an autism spectrum disorder. The interventions used targeted social communication with an interventionist and needed to be conducted via telehealth for 50% of the intervention. Studies were excluded if participants had significant mental health diagnoses. Studies were also excluded if the intervention used a computer-based intervention or artificials intelligence. Results: PEERS was determined to be an effective intervention when delivered to adolescents via telepractice, as evidenced by two randomized controlled trials. Two other interventions were documented in the literature with positive results, though they did not show consistent generalization of learned social skills across non-treatment contexts, such as increased social outings. Conclusion: Telepractice is a viable method of delivery when teaching social communication. Participants were satisfied with the results of all interventions. Interventions should include a component meant to address generalization deficits.

Book excerpt: This was a mixed methods study designed to examine the perceptions of young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) regarding usage of computer-mediated communication (CMC), with a focus on benefits, challenges, and support needs. People with ASD are often prone to social and communication difficulties, making it difficult for them to maintain relationships, find and retain employment, and be active members of their communities. Deficits in these areas are particularly hard for young adults who may no longer have regular routines or opportunities for socializing because they have transitioned out of school-based activities. CMC is a relatively new form of communication, but research suggests its benefits are nearly the same as face-to-face communication for people in the general population. People with ASD generally have difficulties with the nonverbal part of face-to-face communication (i.e. maintaining eye contact, reading body language, interpreting tone of voice), suggesting that they may benefit from utilizing the Internet to communicate with others. Quantitative and qualitative data obtained from the online survey and interviews indicate overall more perceived benefits than challenges, with suggestions for supports. Book excerpt: Public authorities have a duty to ensure looked after children are not at greater risk of being drawn into the criminal justice system than other children. The relevant authorities must continue to support looked after children and care leavers when they are in, and when they leave, custody. The substantial decrease since 2006/07 in the number of young people entering the criminal justice system for the first time is welcomed but looked after children have not benefited from this shift to the same extent as other children. The Youth Justice Board has done excellent work to halve the youth custodial population over the past decade but continues to spend £246 million a year detaining a small fraction of young offenders. Recommendations include: a statutory threshold to enshrine in legislation the principle that only the most serious and prolific young offenders should be placed in custody; devolving the custody budget to enable local authorities to invest in effective alternatives to custody; and more action to reduce the number of young people who breach the terms of their community sentences and the number of young black men in custody. The aim of improving the basic literacy of offenders, as outlined in the Transforming Youth Custody consultation paper is endorsed, but is it most useful to focus resources on the secure estate, given that the average length of stay is currently 79 days? The greater focus should be on improving transition between custody and the community, and on improving provision in the community and incentivising schools and colleges to take back difficult students.
