Book excerpt: As the Nation's principle conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has basic responsibilities for water, fish, wildlife, mineral, land, park, and recreational resources. Interior, America's 'Department of Natural Resources, ' works to assure the wisest choice in managing all of our resources so that each will make it's fully contribution to a better United States -- now and in the future. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is part of the United States Department of the Interior. Its responsibilities encompass 272 million acres of public lands and administration and management of approximately 300 million acres of mineral rights. It also maintains the legal status for 331 million acres of reservations created from public lands, such as the national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national forests ... To manage these resources, the Bureau must be able to accurately identify and locate the increasingly valuable areas of land with which it has been entrusted. BLM's Cadastral Survey Program is responsible for the creation, restoration, marking and defining the boundaries of these lands. Cadastral Survey is also responsible for the official boundary surveys for all federal agencies who together manage over 700 million acres of land.

Book excerpt: In 1790, America was in enormous debt, having depleted what little money and supplies the country had during its victorious fight for independence. Before the nation's greatest asset, the land west of the Ohio River, could be sold it had to be measured out and mapped. And before that could be done, a uniform set of measurements had to be chosen for the new republic out of the morass of roughly 100,000 different units that were in use in daily life. Measuring America tells the fascinating story of how we ultimately gained the American Customary System—the last traditional system in the world—and how one man's surveying chain indelibly imprinted its dimensions on the land, on cities, and on our culture from coast to coast.

Book Surveys and Surveyors of the Public Domain 1785 1975

Download or read book Surveys and Surveyors of the Public Domain 1785 1975 written by Lola Cazier and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cadastral surveys are performed to create, mark, and define, or to retrace the boundaries between abutting land owners, and, more particularly, between land of the Federal Government and private owners or local governments. As referred to here, cadastral surveys were performed only by the General Land Office during its existence and by the Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management is the only agency that is currently authorized to determine the boundaries of the public lands of the United States. Proper understanding of the basis for performance of cadastral surveys includes an understanding of the history of the public land surveys. An understanding of that history requires some consideration of the people who performed these surveys and of the people whose land was affected by them. These chapters were written to be used as an aid in training cadastral surveyors in the application of surveying principles. The learner is expected to gain from the factual material on survey laws and their formation, as well as from a study of the people who performed the surveys. Many of the men who had an important role in the history of cadastral surveying are still living, but only those who have retired are included in the present document."--Foreword.

Book Practical Boundary Surveying

Download or read book Practical Boundary Surveying written by Paul Gay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This complete guide to boundary surveying provides landowners, land surveyors and students with the necessary foundation to understand boundary surveying techniques and the common legal issues that govern boundary establishment. Far from a simple engineering function, boundary establishment is often a difficult and delicate matter, with real monetary and legal ramifications if not accomplished accurately. This book helps readers to understand why such challenges exist and what remedies may be available. Using only simple and logically explained mathematics, the principles and practice of boundary surveying are demystified for those without prior experience and the focused coverage of pivotal issues such as easements and setting lot corners will aid even licensed practitioners in untangling thorny cases. Practical advice on using both basic and advanced instruments is included, alongside clear explanations of legal regulations that will impact any surveyor’s work. For those who desire a more in-depth treatment of the mathematical aspects of boundary surveying, the Appendix includes the underlying theory and many examples of typical calculations performed by boundary surveyors.
