Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A birder's history of one of Canada's most famous birding spots Birding at Point Pelee traces Point Pelee's story from the 1870s, to the national park's establishment in 1918, to present day, when as many as 50,000 birders visit the park in May during spring migration. The book portrays the backdrop against which the park was evolving, the scientific discoveries and changes in ornithological methods through the decades -- early specimen-collecting, bird banding, the development of binoculars and telescopes, the growth of nature photography, the shift from birding as science to birding as hobby -- as well as philosophical shifts and debates about amateur versus professional credentials, and the balance to strike between conservation and recreation. Thoroughly researched and lively, the story takes readers from the earliest days, when the birders were few but fervent, to today's international tourism phenomenon.

Book Advances in Coastal Modeling

Download or read book Advances in Coastal Modeling written by V.C. Lakhan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unifies and enhances the accessibility of contemporary scholarly research on advances in coastal modeling. A comprehensive spectrum of innovative models addresses the wide diversity and multifaceted aspects of coastal research on the complex natural processes, dynamics, interactions and responses of the coastal supersystem and its associated subsystems. The twenty-one chapters, contributed by internationally recognized coastal experts from fourteen countries, provide invaluable insights on the recent advances and present state-of-the-art knowledge on coastal models which are essential for not only illuminating the governing coastal process and various characteristics, but also for understanding and predicting the dynamics at work in the coastal system. One of the unique strengths of the book is the impressive and encompassing presentation of current functional and operational coastal models for all those concerned with and interested in the modeling of seas, oceans and coasts. In addition to chapters modeling the dynamic natural processes of waves, currents, circulatory flows and sediment transport there are also chapters that focus on the modeling of beaches, shorelines, tidal basins and shore platforms. The substantial scope of the book is further strengthened with chapters concentrating on the effects of coastal structures on nearshore flows, coastal water quality, coastal pollution, coastal ecological modeling, statistical data modeling, and coupling of coastal models with geographical information systems.

A Nature Guide to Ontario showcases more than six hundred of the best sites for viewing the many forms of plant and animal life found across the province. The book is divided into seven regions, and sites are listed under county, district, or municipality. Entries contain instructions on how to reach sites, descriptions of the major landscape and habitat features, information about typical as well as important or unusual animals and plants to be found at the site, and an address to contact for more information. Introductory chapters give an overview of Ontario's natural history and its rich and diverse plant and animal life. The book also discusses environmental concerns, offers tips on how to get the most out of an outing, and lists the 'top ten' nature sites in Ontario. There are lists of useful addresses and references, a site index, and an extensive glossary. This volume is a project of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists, whose affiliates and individual members have contributed to the book. A Nature Guide to Ontario, an invaluable reference for all who want to experience and enjoy the best of Ontario's natural areas and wildernesses.

Book Recreational Uses of Coastal Areas

Download or read book Recreational Uses of Coastal Areas written by P. Fabbri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human clustering in coastal areas The coastal zone has gained a solid reputation as a place vocated for recreational activities and this is generally related to the presence of the sea. The relationship, however, does not appear univocal or simple: the sea can be perceived as a hostile element by humans and the more general question of whether the presence of the shore is in itself a favourable, repulsive, or irrelevant factor to settlement is a debatable point, at least for pre-industrial societies. Back in the early part of the 19th century, Friedrich Hegel regarded oceans and rivers as unifying elements rather than dividing ones, thus implying a trend towards the concentration of human settlements along them. 'The sea', he wrote, 'stimulates 1 courage and conquest, as well as profit and plunder', although he realized that this did not equally apply to all maritime peoples. In Hegel's view, different approaches to the sea were mainly the results of cultural factors and, in fact, he recognized that some people living in coastal areas perceive the sea as a dangerous and alien place and the shore as aftnis terrae.
