Book Researching the World of Work

Download or read book Researching the World of Work written by George Strauss and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first on industrial relations research methods, comes at a time when the field of industrial relations is in flux and research strategy has become more complex and varied. Research that once focused on the relationship between labor and management now involves a wider range of issues. This change has raised a number of key questions about how research should be done. The contributors represent four countries and a range of fields, including economics, sociology, psychology, law, history, and industrial relations. They identify distinctive research strategies and suggest approaches that might be appropriate in the future. Among their concerns are the relative value of qualitative and quantitative methods, of using primary and secondary data, and of single versus multimethod techniques.

Book New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment

Download or read book New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment written by Charles J. Whalen and published by Edward Elgar Pub. This book was released on 2008 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Whalen's book identifies avenues leading to the revitalization of industrial relations as an academic discipline. The contributors, a stellar assemblage of the field's leading scholars, demonstrate there is much work to be done: the scope and intellectual content of industrial relations need to be reconsidered; academic and social institutions must be reshaped; and, new conceptual and practical issues demand attention. The authors of the present volume examine a broad range of issues. Some chapters in this book explore the conceptual boundaries and core assumptions of the field; others examine topics including industrial relations law, social capital and industrial relations institutions, changes to the field's academic curricula, the impact of the structure of academic departments on industrial relations scholarship, the state of labor and employment journals, and new approaches to the integration of teaching and community service. There is a wrap-up chapter by MIT's Thomas Kochan that ties all this together and presents additional insights on the revitalization of the field. Industrial relations scholars, labor studies, sociology and business professors as well as many practitioners will find much to recommend in this book.

Book A Decade of Industrial Relations Research 1946 1956 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Decade of Industrial Relations Research 1946 1956 Classic Reprint written by NEIL W. CHAMBERLAIN and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Decade of Industrial Relations Research, 1946-1956 In 1948, in the American Economic Association's Survey of Con temporary Economics, Lloyd Reynolds authored a 33-page chapter summarizing contributions to the state of knowledge in the field of labor economics and, to a lesser extent, industrial relations since the early thirties. It was somehow appropriate that during his term as president of the Industrial Relations Research Association that organization should have initiated a survey of the research con tributions to this field in the postwar decade. Although it was originally intended that this survey should be compressed within a single volume, it soon became apparent that if the numerous subdivisions of the field were to be treated ade quately, two volumes would be needed. This is the first volume. The second will appear at a later date, under' different editorial super vision. The only basis for the selection of the six areas here surveyed is that a considerable amount of research has been done in each. They have not been chosen for review because they are logically related, nor has any effort been made to achieve a symmetry of coverage. Thus Union Government and Union Leadership, our Chapter One, has not been balanced by a comparable chapter on business be cause not so much relevant research has been done on this topic. By the time of the second volume it is possible that a more signi ficant chapter can be written on this aspect of industrial relations.
