Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twilight of the Bwanas is a new look at the colonial period of East Africas history. Many books have been written about specific events or individuals but readers who simply want to know what it was like to have been in East Africa during the colonial era are faced with a confusing choice of source material. The modern tourist or business visitor to East Africa is often puzzled at how things got the way they are and has no idea of the achievements of the men and women who were responsible for its transition from a wilderness to a modern group of states. This book is designed to fill the gap by presenting a light-hearted but none the less serious history of the bwanas and memsahibs of East Africa how they came into being, how they lived and loved, what they ate and drank, and why they left the scene so precipitately. As time goes by, there will be fewer survivors of the colonial era left to tell the tale and the current wave of interest in various aspects of the British Empire will face a lack of eye-witness accounts. While the author is sympathetic to Africas problems, he is gravely concerned about its future and suggests that the road to independence which was trodden so hastily in the 1960s was cynically created by European politicians for selfish reasons. Hitherto unpublished material has been included in the text and though the author has told most of it in his own words, the book has been enlivened by the personal experiences and favourite anecdotes of a wide circle of ex-East Africans. The aim has been to give someone a good read and academic niceties such as footnotes and references have been deliberately avoided. The policy has also been followed of not mentioning living persons unless they happen to be public figures.

Book The Physics of Everyday Things

Download or read book The Physics of Everyday Things written by James Kakalios and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller James Kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles. Most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. What’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? How do we glide through tolls using an E-Z Pass, or find our way to new places using GPS? In The Physics of Everyday Things, James Kakalios takes us on an amazing journey into the subatomic marvels that underlie so much of what we use and take for granted. Breaking down the world of things into a single day, Kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. Each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. Through this “narrative physics,” The Physics of Everyday Things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the Higgs Boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. With his signature clarity and inventiveness, Kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.

Book Seeing Beneath the Soil

Download or read book Seeing Beneath the Soil written by Oliver Anthony Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific soil prospecting methods can give dramatic pictures of buried archaeological sites, and sometimes information on what occurred within them, before any earth has ben removed. Dr Clark, who was one of the earliest to work in this field, has written the first general survey of an increasingly important area of practical archaeology. The emphasis is on the principles and practical application of the well established techniques of resistivity, magnetometry and magnetic susceptibility, with shorter sections on emerging and less common techniques such as ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic methods and phosphate survey. This paperback edition updates and enhances the earlier book, adding new material such as the large-scale evaluation exercises now required as a precondition of planning consent for major developments.
