Book excerpt: "This study presents data from a survey of 80 academic library directors, deans and other high-level officials about their library policies on materials storage. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how many and what kinds of libraries are seeking additional storage space? What solutions have they been using and plan to use? How many use off-campus storage? Or develop cooperative warehousing with other colleges? Or share space on campus with other departments? In general, how satisfied are librarians with their current storage situation?"--Publisher's web site.

Book excerpt: "The 57-page study presents data from a survey of 96 North American academic library directors, deans and university librarians about their current practices and plans for the print book collection. The study looks at the relative intentions to build the print book vs. the eBook collection, pinpointing the types of college and individuals most likely to build up one or the other, both or neither. Also, the report gives detailed data on the percentage of purchases sourced from Amazon, YBP, and Coutts. The study also presents detailed data on the percentage of overall sales accounted by discretionary books sales, and the percentage accounted for by standing orders. In an open ended question, survey participants discuss how they expect their print book purchasing policies to change over the next few years. In addition, the report relates mean, median, minimum and maximum levels of spending for the institutions sampled, with data for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years"--Publisher's website.

Book A Collaborative Approach to Collection Storage

Download or read book A Collaborative Approach to Collection Storage written by Willis E. Bridegam and published by Washington, D.C. : Council on Library and Information Resources. This book was released on 2001 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report offers a case study in the advantages and disadvantages of depository libraries, their economics, and the practical and political issues associated with their creation. As director of the library at Amherst College, the author played a key role in establishing the initial off-site storage facility, as well as in broadening its service to the Five Colleges, Inc. (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst). As libraries change in response to budgetary constraints as well as developments in information technology, the Five College Library Depository model suggests new possibilities for collection management and ways for libraries to reframe their service missions. The questions facing all academic libraries--to what extent can they provide access to materials that they do not own, and which materials must they preserve for future generations--are examined in this report. Contents include: alternatives to open-shelf storage of library materials; continuing net growth of paper collections; off-site storage considerations; establishment of the Amherst College Library Depository; the proposal for a Five-College Library Depository; anticipated implementation and operation; Five-College Collection Management Committee; academic department reactions to the proposed depository; and a national trend toward academic depository libraries.
