Book Surveillance of Injuries in a School for Children with Multiple Disabilities

Download or read book Surveillance of Injuries in a School for Children with Multiple Disabilities written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many incidents of injuries in schools, schools usually respond to such injuries after they have occurred. Therefore, assessing the problem of injuries within individual schools may help prevent future injuries. This study described the distribution of injuries among the students and staff at a school for children with developmental disabilities. Injuries in a school were examined using surveillance to determine the extent of the problem. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Injuries to the head and cuts were the most common. Injuries occurred most frequently in the classrooms without equipment being involved. Possible risk factors were determined and analyzed to determine the impact that injuries have on students and staff members in a school for children with developmental disabilities. This list can guide the design of appropriate and feasible changes or interventions to allow for a safer school environment, resulting in reduced amounts of injuries.

Book World Report on Child Injury Prevention

Download or read book World Report on Child Injury Prevention written by M. M. Peden and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. It should be seen as a complement to the UN Secretary-General's study on violence against children released in late 2006 (that report addressed violence-related or intentional injuries). Both reports suggest that child injury and violence prevention programs need to be integrated into child survival and other broad strategies focused on improving the lives of children. Evidence demonstrates the dramatic successes in child injury prevention in countries which have made a concerted effort. These results make a case for increasing investments in human resources and institutional capacities. Implementing proven interventions could save more than a thousand children's lives a day.--p. vii.

This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on preventing potentially disabling conditions from developing into disabilities and on minimizing the effects of such conditions on a person's productivity and quality of life. It describes disability as a social and public health issue and not just a physical condition. The report begins with an executive summary, an introduction which discusses prevention issues in general and defines concepts, and a list of 27 recommendations. Subsequent chapters discuss: (1) the magnitude and dimensions of disability in the United States; (2) a conceptual approach to disability prevention and use of the tools and principles of epidemiology; (3) major areas of disability (developmental disabilities, injury-related disabilities, chronic diseases and aging, and secondary conditions associated with primary disabling conditions); (4) government and private sector programs concerned with disability prevention; and (5) conclusions and recommendations in the areas of a national program for the prevention of disability, surveillance, research, access to care and preventive services, and professional and public education. Appendixes contain a paper by Saad Z. Nagi titled "Disability Concepts Revisited: Implications for Prevention"; a statement of one committee member dissenting from this majority report of the Committee on a National Agenda for the Prevention of Disabilities; a response to the dissenting statement by committee members; and committee biographies. Book The Future of Disability in America

Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.

Book Sports related Injuries Among High School Athletes in the United States and Their Use of Protective Equipment

Download or read book Sports related Injuries Among High School Athletes in the United States and Their Use of Protective Equipment written by Christine Lee Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school sports play an important role in the adoption and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle among millions of adolescents in the United States (US). Despite the numerous health benefits of participating in sports, high school athletes are at risk of sports-related injury as a certain endemic level of injury can be expected among participants of any physical activity. Injury prevention in this population is often overlooked as sports-related injuries are thought to be unavoidable; however, up to one- half of all sports-related injuries among children may be preventable. The morbidity, mortality, and disability caused by high school sports-related injuries can be reduced through the development of effective prevention strategies including the addition and/or improvement of protective equipment. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the use of protective equipment among high school athletes, a primary prevention approach to preventing sports-related injuries, by utilizing data from a national high school injury surveillance system. The three specific aims were to: 1) investigate whether high school football concussion characteristics vary by helmet age/recondition status, manufacturer, and model; 2) estimate the rate of dental injuries among US high school athletes and describe the use of mouthguards in various high school sports; and 3) demonstrate how sports injury surveillance data can be used to inform evidence-based protective equipment policy discussions. This study found that for new and reconditioned football helmets, the most common helmet manufacturers and models on the market appear to provide US high school football players similar protection against concussion. This research also found that wearing a mouthguard in sports where there is potential for contact with another player or contact with playing apparatus may help to prevent or mitigate consequences of dental injuries. This result was found for sports that include contact such as football, field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse as well as for non-contact sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. Finally, this study found that similar to successful efforts in other public health areas, national sports injury surveillance systems can be used to provide the data needed to inform policy change resulting in improved athlete health and safety. Although the risk of injury while participating in sports may never be completely eliminated, the use of protective equipment, a primary prevention approach, is one way to reduce the risk of injury and keep athletes healthy and active. Injury rates among high school athletes need to be reduced to the lowest possible level without discouraging adolescents from participating in this important form of physical activity. This goal can best be accomplished by developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based preventive interventions including the use of protective equipment.
