Book The South Surrey Plan

Book excerpt: "In 1966 an Official Community Plan was approved by the Provincial Government for the District of Surrey. As a broad outline of the future desired by Surrey residents, the Official Community Plan provides a context for the development of the Municipality. However, since the Official Community Plan is a very broad and general document, it recognized the need for detailed planning and development guidelines for specific areas. The second step, therefore, was a programme aimed at the preparation of Plans for the five Towns as defined in the Official Community Plan. The South Surrey Plan is one of this second series."--Page iii.

Book Climate Governance and Urban Planning

Download or read book Climate Governance and Urban Planning written by Deborah Heinen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban planning as a discipline is deeply integral to implementing a low-carbon future. This book fosters an understanding for how the rules-in-use that govern urban planning influence the ability to implement low-carbon development patterns. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of the climate governance and urban planning literatures, the book provides a context to understand plan implementation challenges and obstacles in metropolitan areas. As metropolitan regions across the globe seek to reduce emissions from transportation, many levels of governments have developed ambitious climate action plans that make land use and transportation recommendations in order to reduce vehicle miles traveled. Many have recommended low-carbon development patterns which are characterized by intensified and diversified uses around rapid transit stations. However, the implementation of these recommendations is done within the context of different "rules-in-use" unique to the planning systems in each metropolitan region. The book examines the rules-in-use in three metropolitan regions of similar demographic size: the Metro Vancouver, Puget Sound, and the Stuttgart regions. By examining the implementation of low-carbon development patterns, the book focuses on growth management related questions about how to coordinate transit investments with land use decisions in metropolitan regions. The book finds that state legislation that deals with metropolitan planning and regional growth strategies can greatly aid in creating accountability among actors as well as provide a road map to navigate conflicts when implementing low-carbon development patterns. By focusing on the rules-in-use, the book is of interest to policy-makers, planners, advocates, and researchers who wish to assess and improve the odds of implementing low-carbon development patterns in a metropolitan region.

Book The Life of North American Suburbs

Download or read book The Life of North American Suburbs written by Jan Nijman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles and explains the role of suburbs in North American cities since the mid-twentieth century. Examining fifteen case studies from New York to Vancouver, Atlanta to Chicago, Montreal to Phoenix, The Life of North American Suburbs traces the insightful connection between the evolution of suburbs and the cultural dynamics of modern society. Suburbs are uniquely significant spaces: their creation and evolution reflect the shifting demographics, race relations, modes of production, cultural fabric, and class structures of society at large. The case studies investigate the place of suburbs within their wider metropolitan constellations: the crucial role they play in the cultural, economic, political, and spatial organization of the city. Together, the chapters paint a compelling portrait of North American cities and their dynamic suburban landscapes.

Book Race Racialization and Antiracism in Canada and Beyond

Download or read book Race Racialization and Antiracism in Canada and Beyond written by Genevieve Fuji Johnson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-06-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume brings together scholars and activists to examine expressions of racism in contemporary policy areas, including education, labour, immigration, media, and urban planning. While anti-racist struggles during the twentieth century were largely pitched against overt forms of racism (e.g., pogroms, genocide, segregation, apartheid, and 'ethnic cleansing'), it has become increasingly apparent that there are other, less visible, forms of racism. These subtler incarnations are of special interest to the contributors. The intent of Race, Racialization, and Antiracism in Canada and Beyond is to probe systemic forms of racism, as well as to suggest strategies for addressing them. The collection is organized by themes pertinent to political and social expressions of racism in Canada and the wider world, such as the state and its mediation of race, education and the perpetuation of racist marginalization, and the role of the media. The contributors argue that, in order to effectively combat racism, various methodological approaches are required, approaches that are reflective of the diversity of the world we seek to understand.
