Book The Pleasure of a Surplus Income

Download or read book The Pleasure of a Surplus Income written by Christine von Oertzen and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in Association with the German Historical Institute, Washington, D.C. At a time when part-time jobs are ubiquitous, it is easy to forget that they are a relatively new phenomenon. This book explores the reasons behind the introduction of this specific form of work in West Germany and shows how it took root, in both norm and law, in factories, government authorities, and offices as well as within families and the lives of individual women. The author covers the period from the early 1950s, a time of optimism during the first postwar economic upswing, to 1969, the culmination of the legislative institutionalization of part-time work.

Book What Should Surplus Germany Do

Download or read book What Should Surplus Germany Do written by Jacob Kirkegaard and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Germany's large current account surpluses have been criticized as a major cause of slower economic growth in the euro area periphery, especially Greece, Spain, and Italy. Critics repeatedly call on Germany to boost domestic demand and allow wages to rise. This Policy Brief argues that Germany should indeed act to reduce its current account surplus, but not for the reasons that critics give. Rather the German government should recognize that its large surpluses expose German savers to potential financial losses, bailout costs, and opportunity costs associated with low (negative) domestic real interest rates. Instead of accelerating wage growth in excess of productivity, Germany should increase public investments in the domestic economy and raise its ceiling on public indebtedness."--Introduction.

Book Trade Surplus in Germany

Download or read book Trade Surplus in Germany written by Jens Hillebrand and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 1,0, University of Auckland (Business School), course: Global Business Environment, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This report analyses the impact of the real exchange rate two years beforehand and the GDP on Germany's trade surplus between the second quarter 1993 and the first quarter 2007. It is found that both factors had significant impact on Germany's trade surplus during the analysed period. Use of a piecewise linear regression technique, moreover, identifies changes in the development of Germany's trade surplus over time. A temporary downward shift in the consistent growth trend of Germany's trade surplus between the first quarter 1998 and the fourth quarter 2002 is seen to be due to changes in Germany's fiscal and monetary policy during the introduction phase of the Euro.

  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book The Surplus Woman written by Catherine L. Dollard and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first German women’s movement embraced the belief in a demographic surplus of unwed women, known as the Frauenüberschuß, as a central leitmotif in the campaign for reform. Proponents of the female surplus held that the advances of industry and urbanization had upset traditional marriage patterns and left too many bourgeois women without a husband. This book explores the ways in which the realms of literature, sexology, demography, socialism, and female activism addressed the perceived plight of unwed women. Case studies of reformers, including Lily Braun, Ruth Bré, Elisabeth Gnauck-Kühne, Helene Lange, Alice Salomon, Helene Stöcker, and Clara Zetkin, demonstrate the expansive influence of the discourse surrounding a female surfeit. By combining the approaches of cultural, social, and gender history, The Surplus Woman provides the first sustained analysis of the ways in which imperial Germans conceptualized anxiety about female marital status as both a product and a reflection of changing times.

Book excerpt: This article privileges a financial sector explanation for the persistent German trade surpluses of the past 15 years. More specifically, it explains the disruptive consequences of a long-running stagnation in domestic investment in the face of rising German savings, particularly at corporate and government levels. It also offers a political explanation of how German elites have understood (and often misunderstood) the trade surplus, and it links major distributional choices in Germany's domestic political economy to the disruptive international trade and investment flows. The result is what one might call a “political narrative of unbalanced growth.” The argument has implications for the increasingly tense German-American Transatlantic economic relationship.

Book Reflections on Progress

Download or read book Reflections on Progress written by Kemal Dervis and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, more than ever, the world needs growth-oriented and socially inclusive policymaking. Is the world giving up on the promise of ever-greater prosperity for all, on functioning democratic institutions, and on long-term peace? Is the special set of circumstances that led to the recent rapid growth in emerging markets unlikely to be present in the future? Will the second decade of the twenty first century end with “secular stagnation”? Does the rise of authoritarianism, populism, and fanatic nihilism—all experienced over the last few years—threaten to unravel what has been built painstakingly since the catastrophe of World War II? Kemal Dervis addresses these and similar questions in this thought-provoking series of essays written for Project Syndicate from 2011 to 2015. The essays are organized in three sections: global economic interdependence, inequality and the political economy of reform, and the specific challenge of Europe. The common theme is the need for growth-oriented and socially inclusive policymaking in an interdependent world. These kinds of policies offer the potential for another wave of unprecedented human progress aided by breathtaking new technologies. However, a huge and destabilizing disruption is possible if policymaking is not globally cooperative and is not focused on inclusion and greater equity. These essays synthesize the experience and analysis of a scholar and policymaker with national, regional, and international experience at the highest levels. Dervis exhibits a passion for combining strongly held values with political feasibility.
