Download or read book Barefoot in Siargao written by Christina Camingue Buo and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barefoot in Siargao is a collection of stories that the author drew on her memories of idyllic childhood summers and nature adventures in Siargao, the mystical island home of her grandparents. She writes about family life, traditional beliefs, local culture, and folklore-ayok (witches), ghosts, and balls of fire. The book was born out of her love of art, nature, literature, and culture. The book aims to open wonders in nature and deepen the human bond with the natural world. The writer urges readers to be sensitive to culture and environment and protect all creation. Readers learn about the natural heritage of Siargao Island, which is of important conservation value to the Philippines because of its coral habitats, seagrass, mangroves, and wildlife. The book is a loving tribute to Siargao, the touchstone of her family, and a celebration of the strong heritage of faith and love that her parents and grandparents left the family.

Download or read book Battle of Surigao Strait written by Anthony P. Tully and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Tully] paints Admiral Nishimura's high-speed run into history with an entirely fresh palette of detail.” —James D. Hornfischer, New York Times–bestselling author of Neptune’s Inferno Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of US Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the action. In several respects, Tully's narrative differs radically from the received versions and represents an important historical corrective. Also included in the book are a number of previously unpublished photographs and charts that bring a fresh perspective to the battle. “By giving a fuller view of the Japanese side, Tully's work forces a substantial revision of the traditional picture of the battle. Battle of Surigao Strait is not only military history based on scrupulous use of a plethora of new source materials, but is a spanking good read. Highly recommended.” —War in History “Tully has managed to trace the complicated flow of and reason for events on the nights of 24-25 October with a skill and aplomb that forces one to reconsider previously held views.” —Naval History

Download or read book Iranun and Balangingi written by James Francis Warren and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to explore ethnic, cultural and material changes in the transformative history(s) of oceans and seas, commodities and populations, mariners and ships, and raiders and refugees in Southeast Asia, with particular reference to the Sulu-Mindanao region, or the "Sulu Zone". Examining the profound changes that were taking place in the Sulu-Mindanao region and elsewhere at the end of the eighteenth century, this book, the companion volume to The Sulu Zone published in 1981, establishes an ethnohistorical framework for understanding the emerging inter-connected patterns of global commerce, long distance maritime trading and the formation and maintenance of ethnic identity. It also provides a new conceptual framework for understanding the problem of ethnic self-definition and political processes and conflicts in the recent history of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Iranun and Balangingi seeks to probe these themes through an inter-disciplinary approach, using archival sources and literature, as well as period testimony, interviews, diaries, and fieldwork observations from sites primarily located in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
