Book Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park Washington Classic Reprint

Download or read book Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park Washington Classic Reprint written by Dwight R. Crandell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surficial Geology of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington Much of the ground surface around Mount Rainier vol cano is directly underlain by loose geologic deposits that veneer the hard rock formations. Examples of these deposits are sand and gravel bars along the rivers, ridges of loose rock debris beside the glaciers, and sloping aprons of rock fragments beneath almost every cliff. Even though they are generally thin and inconspicuous when compared with the rock formations, these surficial deposits are clues to geologic events that have profoundly influenced the shape of the park's landscape. Thus, from the character and extent of glacial deposits one can judge the age and size of former glaciers that carved the cirques and deep canyons of the park; from the mudflows which streamed down nearly every valley one can infer the age and size of huge landslides of the past that helped determine Mount Rainier's present shape; and from the pumice deposits some of the volcano's recent eruptive activity can be reconstructed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geologic Story of Mount Rainier: A Look at the Geologic Past of One of America's Most Scenic Volcanoes The rocks of the Cascade Range provide a record of earth history that started nearly 60 million years ago. Even then, as today, waves pounded on beaches and rivers ran to the sea, molding and distributing material that formed some of the rocks we now see in the park. Department of Interior, Office of National Parks Buildings Reservations, The Master Plan, Mount Rainier National Park 1933. (master Plans) Overleaf: Proposed Hotel Development, Mount Rainier National Park, April 3, 1950. In the late 19405 and early 1950s the public demanded that the National Park Service (nps) develop a winter use policy that would make the Paradise area of Mount Rainier a ski resort. Skiers wanted all-year road access, overnight accommodations, and a chair lift or an aerial tram at Paradise. The proposed hotel would have had 250 guest rooms, employee quarters and offices, a museum, lecture hall, warming rooms and ski shops. The dining room and cafeteria would have seated 475. The nps did not want to turn Mt. Rainier into a ski resort and rejected the hotel proposal. Other regional ski areas emerged over the next decade and public demand for a ski resort at Paradise decreased. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mount Rainier and Its Glaciers As for the plea that these glaciers lie in a scarcely opened, out-of the-way region, a forbidding wilderness as compared with maturely civilized Switzerland, it no longer has the force it once possessed. Rainier's ice fields can now be reached from Seattle or Tacoma, the two principal cities of western Washington, In a comfortable day's journeying, either by rail or by automobile. The cooling sight of crevassed glaciers and the exhilarating flower-scented air of alpine meadows need no longer be exclusive pleasures, to be gained only by a trip abroad.
