Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This surficial map is based on aerial photographs and satellite images interpretations, as well as on field work observations. The plateau forms a heteregenous map pattern, with patches of cold-based sediments (regolith, and regolith mixed with till) cross-cut by till deposited during glacial readvances, and glacial lakes sediments. The regolith is a pre-glacial or interglacial landscape feature. The northeastern rugged land was eroded by warm-based glaciers flowing toward the northeast, and is dominantly covered by till and bedrock outcrops. The eastern coast was dissected by valley and fiord glaciers. The Frobisher Bay moraine was formed from 9 to 8 14C ka, and the deglaciation of Chidliak Bay is dated at 8.6 14C ka. Proglacial lakes were dammed by important moraines. The observed marine limits range from 60 m asl to 85 m asl.

Glaciers cover about half of the map area, including unique floating ice shelves along the north coast, which have largely broken up in the last few decades but many fiord and valley glaciers still contact the sea. Sedimentary rock outcrops form the dominant surficial unit, including large areas of frost shattered rubble mantling broad summits and slopes. Glacial debris is also widespread normally forming a thin discontinuous veneer of till or as isolated erratic boulders. In the past, as now, the main source of run-off and sediment is supplied by glacial meltwater. Consequently most of the unconsolidated sediment lies within formerly glaciated valleys and coastlines where there are complex associations of moraines, glaciofluvial andglaciomarine deposits related to the advance and retreat of valley glaciers and ice caps, coupled with falling sea levels caused by postglacial crustal uplift.

The purpose of converting legacy map data to a common science language and common legend is to enable and facilitate the efficient digital compilation, interpretation, management and dissemination of geologic map information in a structured and consistent manner. This provides an effective knowledge management tool designed around a geo-database which can expand following the type of information to appear on new surficial geology maps.
