Book Friction Surface Phenomena

Download or read book Friction Surface Phenomena written by G.P. Shpenkov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-04-07 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph summarises results of research in some surface phenomena, observed in mechanical treatment and friction. In particular the book is devoted to urgent problems of the science of friction and wear and provides insight into the mechanism of the phenomena that cause, on the one hand, anomalously low coefficients of friction and wear (the so-called selective transfer) and on the other, dramatic damages of the surface layers during sliding (hydrogen wear of metals). The nature of metal interaction during sliding in selective transfer and hydrogen wear modes is analysed in detail. Furthermore results of studies concerned with certain aspects of phenomena appearing in the process of influencing contacting surfaces and with detecting the relationship between the observed characteristics and behavior of investigated materials in the process of mechanical treatment and friction are presented. The principle followed is to combine varied experimental facts, physical concepts and investigation methods, which at first sight appear to be unrelated, and using this approach to determine general rules. Chapter one provides the reader with a general understanding of fundamental surface phenomena which provide the background to their dynamic interaction in mechanical treatment and under friction. Chapter two deals with the laws governing influence of mechanical effects on the surface. The third chapter presents the fundamentals of the selective transfer theory under friction. Other chapters deal with the possibilities of the Mössbauer electron spectroscopy method, widely used in physics for solving tribology problems, the influence of external electromotive force sources on contact resistance and friction pairs' wear, and hydrogen wear of metals under friction.

Download or read book Nanolubricants written by Jean Michel Martin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technology involved in lubrication by nanoparticles is a rapidly developing scientific area and one that has been watched with interest for the past ten years. Nanolubrication offers a solution to many problems associated with traditional lubricants that contain sulphur and phosphorus; and though for some time the production of nanoparticles was restricted by the technologies available, today synthesis methods have been improved to such a level that it is possible to produce large quantities relatively cheaply and efficiently. Nanolubricants develops a new concept of lubrication, based on these nanoparticles, and along with the authors’ own research it synthesises the information available on the topic of nanolubrication from existing literature and presents it in a concise form. Describes the many advantages and potential applications of nanotechnology in the tribological field. Offers a full review of the state-of-the-art as well as much original research that is yet unpublished. Includes sections on boundary lubrication by colloïdal systems, nanolubricants made of metal dichalcogenides, carbon-based nanolubricants, overbased detergent salts, nanolubricants made of metals and boron-based solid nanolubricants and lubrication additives. Authored by highly regarded experts in the field with contributions from leading international academics. Nanolubricants will appeal to postgraduate students, academics and researchers in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and materials science. It should also be of interest to practising engineers with petroleum companies and mechanical manufacturers.

Book Aqueous Lubrication Natural And Biomimetic Approaches

Download or read book Aqueous Lubrication Natural And Biomimetic Approaches written by Nicholas D Spencer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man lubricates mostly with oil. Nature lubricates exclusively with water. Pure water is a poor lubricant, but the addition of proteins, especially glycoproteins, can modify surfaces to make them far more lubricating at slow speeds. Understanding how nature does this, and the physical structures involved, is not only important for the understanding of diseases such as osteoarthritis, but also essential for the successful application of articulating implants, such as hips and knees, as well as the development of medical devices such as catheters and contact lenses. A host of important applications of water-based lubrication are already in place in the personal care and food industries, and further industrial applications of water-based lubrication could have a significant positive impact on the environment. This book is the first of its kind. It brings together the latest research in biological and biomimetic, water-based lubrication and is authored by the world's experts in the field.
