Download or read book Water Availability and Use Science Program Estimated Use of Water in the United States In 2015 written by Cheryl A. Dieter and published by Geological Survey. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates of water withdrawals enable the depiction of trends in total water use for the Nation among different geographic areas, categories of use, and sources over time. Water-use information is a critical component of water budgets, which are essential to surface- water and groundwater availability studies. This information is also essential to accurately understand how future water demands will be met while maintaining adequate water quality and quantities for human and ecosystem needs across the United States of America. Data is represented in text abstracts and analysis, tables, chart graphics, and photos presented throughout. The estimates contained within this volume focus on water use for eight (8) categories: Public Supply * Irrigation Self-supplied Domestic * Livestock Aquaculture * Industrial Mining * Thermoelectric Power Related products: Other products produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are available here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/us-geological-survey-usgs Check out our Water Management resources collection here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/catalog/water-management

Download or read book Shallow Groundwater Systems written by Peter Dillon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shallow groundwater systems are important as a source of water, for sustenance of stream baseflow, and for wetland and riparian ecosystems. They are also central to waterlogging, and dryland and irrigation salinity problems. Response time to hydrologic change and pollutant loadings is fast among shallow aquifiers, and it is important that hydrogeologists and natural resource managers understand the unsaturated zone processes which links human activity at the soil surface and the underlying groundwater, and vice versa. This volume of papers explores practical aspects of soil and surface water interactions with groundwater, including modelling of flow and contaminant transport in the unsaturated and saturated zones.

Download or read book The Great Lakes Water Wars written by Peter Annin and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.

Download or read book Surface Water Supply of Illinois written by Illinois Internal Improvemen Commission and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surface Water Supply of Illinois: Central and Southern Portions, 1908 1910 The investigations have been concentrated upon streams in the central and southern portion of the State where water supply, prevention of overflow and reclamation of swamp land make the strongest appeal for immediate study of the problems. It is essential that records of stream ow shall be maintained during a period of years sufficient to cover all stages, in order that within reason able limits the entire range of ow from the absolute maximum to the absolute minimum may be determined. The length of such a period manifestly varies for different streams and cannot be absolutely deter mined. Experience has shown that the records should cover from five to ten years, or for some streams twenty years or more, the limit being determined by the relative importance of the stream and the inter dependence of the results and other long-time records on adjacent streams.
