Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-509/ The objectives of this report have been to present an overview of the surface treatment (STM) industry and the legal framework for implementation of the IED directive in the Nordic countries. The project describes currently used Best Available Techniques (BATs) in the STM industry in the Nordic countries. Further the project describes the key environmental aspects of the STM sector relating to the use of raw materials, resource use of energy and water, emissions to surface- and groundwater, the generation of solid and liquid wastes. For the final part of the project, twelve BAT candidates and four new emerging techniques are described. The techniques are focusing on resource use, emissions to water, waste management, circular economy, energy use. Optimisation, closed loop systems, digitalisation and automation are common denominators.

Book BAT and Cleaner Technology in Environmental Permits

Download or read book BAT and Cleaner Technology in Environmental Permits written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The objective of the project has been to generate Easy-to-use tools for Nordic environmental authorities, providing them with guidance on what terms can be used when formulating BAT and CT conditions in the permit and licensing process. The tool can also be used as a guide to industries applying for permits. This report gives overviews of BAT, CT and Easy-to-use tools for the sector surface treatment of metals. The project has looked into common processes and production technologies and their main environmental impacts. Investigations on relevant permit requirements have been carried out in Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The report compiles the common terms used in Nordic permits and summarizes experiences concerning BAT and CT requirements. The BAT and CT requirements identified in the Ease-to-use tools are separated into various themes to ease the user's identification of relevant information. There are two other reports from the project. Part 1 contains a summary of findings, analysis and conclusions of the project, while Part 3 gives results for the sector of Fish processing industry

This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:norden:org:diva-6174 The project proposes and describes techniques, which can be considered as best available techniques (BAT) used on biogas plants in the Nordic countries in order to give inspiration to the sector and authorities. The project describes the size and characteristics of the biogas industry and the regulatory framework in the countries. Further the project describes the potential environmental impact from different types of biogas plants and utilization of the digestate and energy. The plants included in the project have a permitted treatment capacity larger than 30 and less than 100 tonnes of feedstock per day. Ten BAT candidates are discussed in the report. Among those are location of biogas plant in the planning stage, selection of suitable feedstock in co-digestion, handling of air emissions and quality of biogas. Areas of research and development in the biogas sector are also discussed.

Book Surface Application of Paper Chemicals

Download or read book Surface Application of Paper Chemicals written by J. Brander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the exception of a slight hiccup during the height of the recent environmental movement (during the early 1990s), when for a year or two consumers were prepared to pay a price premium for lower quality recycled paper than for the virgin product, the inexorable improvement in the quality demanded of paper products continues. This demand for quality covers not only the aesthetics ofthe product but also its performance. Moreover, it is becoming increasingly the case that papers designed for a particular use must, as it were incidentally, also perform well in alternative applications. An example is that of office and printing papers, which are expected to perform as well in copier machines as in all the various forms of impact and non-impact printers. But even greater demands are made in other product areas, where board designed for dry foods can also be expected to protect moist and fatty materials and be made of 100% recycled fibre. The need to isolate foodstuffs from some of the contaminants that can affect recycled board is a· serious challenge. Thus, papermakers are constantly striving to meet a broadening spectrum of demands on their products; often while accepting declining quality of raw materials. The product design philosophy that has arisen in response to this is increasingly to isolate the bulk of a paper from its uses: to engineer the needed performance characteristics into the paper surfaces while more or less ignoring what happens inside.

Book Nanotoxicology in Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials

Download or read book Nanotoxicology in Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials written by Henriqueta Louro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its advent, nanotechnologies are considered key enabling technologies that take advantage of a wide array of nanomaterials (NMs) for biomedical and industrial applications generating significant societal and economic benefits. However, such innovation increases human exposure to these substances through inhalation, ingestion or dermal contact raising public health concerns. Furthermore, the NMs’ specific physicochemical properties, that confer them unique beneficial characteristics, can also elicit nano-bio interactions leading to toxicity and concerns for public health. In addition, such properties can be affected by the surrounding matrix, particularly when incorporated in complex matrices such as food products, leading to secondary features potentially more relevant than primary characteristics for determining their toxicological outcome. These nano specific issues raise the question of whether the NMs may produce adverse outcomes that are not accounted for when using conventional toxicological approaches to assess their safety. Such uncertainties about the safety of NMs for human health and the environment may hamper a faster and more widespread exploration of their potentials. In response, the NMs definition has evolved, and nanotoxicology has developed towards new and more integrative approach methods to support regulatory and policy actions. This book provides a perspective on recent developments in the synthesis, application, and characterization of NMs and the related nanotechnologies, focusing on nanotoxicology for their accurate safety assessment early in the product development stage. The use of complex in vitro models, including multicellular systems and organoids, and “omics-based” approaches, such as transcriptomics or epigenomics, have greatly contributed to an in-depth understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind some NMs toxicity. Such mechanistic knowledge is equally addressed in this book and has set the basis for a predictive nanotoxicology approach building on adverse outcome pathways. In addition, considering the knowledge provided by the above-mentioned approaches, insights into risk assessment, standardization, and regulation of NMs are also included. Incorporating adequate nanosafety assessment early in the life-cycle of NMs will allow the implementation of the safe and sustainable-by-design paradigm enabling safety to keep pace with innovation.
