Book Experimental and Analytical Studies of a Model Helicopter Rotor in Hover

Download or read book Experimental and Analytical Studies of a Model Helicopter Rotor in Hover written by F. X. Caradonna and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is a benchmark test to aid the development of various rotor performance codes. The study involves simultaneous blade pressure measurements and tip vortex surveys. Measurements were made for a wide range of tip Mach numbers including the transonic flow regime. The measured tip vortex strength and geometry permit effective blade loading predictions when used as input to a prescribed wake lifting surface code. It is also shown that with proper inflow and boundary layer modeling, the supercritical flow regime can be accurately predicted. (Author).

Book The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories

Download or read book The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories written by G.A.M. van Kuik and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first rotor performance predictions were published by Joukowsky exactly 100 years ago. Although a century of research has expanded the knowledge of rotor aerodynamics enormously, and modern computer power and measurement techniques now enable detailed analyses that were previously out of reach, the concepts proposed by Froude, Betz, Joukowsky and Glauert for modelling a rotor in performance calculations are still in use today, albeit with modifications and expansions. This book is the result of the author's curiosity as to whether a return to these models with a combination of mathematics, dedicated computations and wind tunnel experiments could yield more physical insight and answer some of the old questions still waiting to be resolved. Although most of the work included here has been published previously, the book connects the various topics, linking them in a coherent storyline. “The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories” was first published in 2018. This Revised Second Edition (2022) will be of interest to those working in all branches of rotor aerodynamics – wind turbines, propellers, ship screws and helicopter rotors. It has been written for proficient students and researchers, and reading it will demand a good knowledge of inviscid (fluid) mechanics. Jens Nørkær Sørensen, DTU, Technical University of Denmark: “(...) a great piece of work, which in a consistent way highlights many of the items that the author has worked on through the years. All in all, an impressive contribution to the classical work on propellers/wind turbines.” Peter Schaffarczyk, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany: “(...) a really impressive piece of work!” Carlos Simão Ferreira, Technical University Delft: “This is a timely book for a new generation of rotor aerodynamicists from wind turbines to drones and personal air-vehicles. In a time where fast numerical solutions for aerodynamic design are increasingly available, a clear theoretical and fundamental formulation of the rotor-wake problem will help professionals to evaluate the validity of their design problem. ‘The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories’ is a pleasure to read, while the structure, text and figures are just as elegant as the theory presented.” The cover shows ‘The Red Mill’, by Piet Mondriaan, 1911, collection Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Book Model Tilt Rotor Hover Performance and Surface Pressure Measurement

Download or read book Model Tilt Rotor Hover Performance and Surface Pressure Measurement written by Chee Tung and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test of a small scale 3-bladed model rotor, with geometry typical of that used on tilt-rotor aircraft, was conducted in the Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate's anechoic hover chamber. The purpose of this test was to determine the hover performance of the rotor and investigate the pressure distributions on a blade at various collective pitch angles and tip speeds. The measured pressures indicate that the rotor did not stall for high collective pitch angles up to theta sub c = 25 deg. This is clearly a three dimensional effect since two-dimensional theory predicts flow separation at these high angles. The flow near the trailing edge separated above theta sub c = 25 deg which caused a sharp increase in power. (edc).

Book Steady and Periodic Pressure Measurements on a Generic Helicopter Fuselage Model in the Presence of a Rotor

Download or read book Steady and Periodic Pressure Measurements on a Generic Helicopter Fuselage Model in the Presence of a Rotor written by Raymond E. Mineck and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel test of a generic helicopter fuselage model with an independently mounted rotor has been conducted to obtain steady and periodic pressure data on the helicopter body. The model was tested at four advance ratios and three thrust coefficients. The periodic unsteady pressure coefficients are marked by four peaks associated with the passage of the four rotor blades. Blade passage effects are largest on the nose and tail boom of the model. The magnitude of the pulse increases with rotor thrust coefficient. Tabular listings of the unsteady pressure data are included to permit independent analysis. A CDrom containing the steady and unsteady pressure data presented in the report is available from the authors.
