Book Surface Modification of Nanoparticles and Nanotubes by Plasma Polymerization and Properties Characterization

Download or read book Surface Modification of Nanoparticles and Nanotubes by Plasma Polymerization and Properties Characterization written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanomaterials have many special properties including a high surface energy and a high specific surface area. Those properties also cause the agglomeration of the nanomaterials. A useful strategy is to use surface modification to change the nanoparticles surface properties to minimize the agglomeration problem and meet other applications of functional materials. In the last two decades, much more research has been devoted to the surface modification of nanomaterials. Plasma polymerization is the one of the main methods of surface modification of particles and has many benefits. However few publications investigate on the surface modification of nanoparticles by this method. In this thesis, two studies are done. In the first part (this part is finished under the guidance of Dr. William van Ooij and in his lab), a pyrrole-coated nano ZnO powder was prepared by plasma polymerization. The surface properties, microhardness and sinteriblity of pyrrole coated ZnO nanoparticles treated by plasma polymerization under different temperatures are studied. Those studies showed that at a suitable treatment temperature and time, the coated nanopaticles increase the surface microhardness and the modified nanoparticles change their surface properties from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Higher pressure and higher treatment temperature during pellet compaction give higher mechanical properties. The polymer coating improves the sinteribility at low temperature. To achieve good mechanical properties, the polymer-coated nanoparticles need to be treated in a faster sintering and lower temperature environment. In the second part, the Carbon Nanofibers (CNF) are coated using two plasma power conditions. The relationship between the mechanical properties, mainly tensile strength and Young's Modulus, and the dispersion time using ultrasonication and the carbon nanofiber concentration are studied. The coating is also characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), and Infrared Spectroscopy (IR). The results showed that plasma treated carbon nanofiber cast in a polymer matrix had better tensile strength and Young's modulus comparing to the untreated carbon nanofiber if ultarsonication at relative shorter time. For the current experiment condition, 100w plasma power coated CNF cast in a polymer has better mechanical properties than that of 10w plasma power.

Book Plasma Surface Modification of Polymers

Download or read book Plasma Surface Modification of Polymers written by Kash L Mittal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of invited papers (previously published in special issues of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology) written by internationally recognized researchers actively working in the field of plasma surface modification. It provides a current, comprehensive overview of the plasma treatment of polymers. In contrast to plasma polymerization, plasma surface modification reactions do not cause thin-film deposition, and can therefore only modify the surface properties of organic substrates. Plasma surface modifications are fast, efficient methods for improving the adhesion properties and other surface characteristics of a variety of polymeric materials. The focus of this volume is on adhesion phenomena, surface properties and the surface characterization of plasma-treated materials. This book opens with a critical review of the plasma surface modification of polymers for improved adhesion. The remainder of the papers are divided into two sections, one dealing with the characterization of plasma-treated surfaces and the second concerned with various practical applications of plasma-treated surfaces

Book excerpt: Herein, the various polymer properties and the underlying mechanism for the functionalization and surface modification of polymer nanoparticles have been discussed. There are numerous polymer particles designed and developed for various applications. The synthesis and characterization of different types of polymers followed by the engineering of nanoparticles and capsules depend on various factors. There are too many polymerization methods approached for the development of nanoparticles with desired surface properties. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP), emulsion polymerization (EP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and free radical micro initiation are the significant approaches for the polymerization reactions. The polymer nanoparticle functionalization and modification of their surfaces based on requirements is an essential task. The solvent concentration, pH, temperature, and sonication have played a vital role to tune the morphology of polymer nanoparticles and capsules. Different characterizations such as FTIR, NMR (1H and 13C), HRMS, and MALDI-TOF are used for preliminary structural and confirmations. Further, SEM, FE-SEM, TEM, AFM, BET, XRD, Raman, EDAX, TGA-DSC, DLS, and zeta potential were used for morphological and thermal properties.

Book Plasma based Synthesis and Modification of Nanomaterials

Download or read book Plasma based Synthesis and Modification of Nanomaterials written by Pawel Pohl and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, entitled “Plasma-Based Synthesis and Modification of Nanomaterials” is a collection of nine original research articles devoted to the application of different atmospheric pressure (APPs) and low-pressure (LPPs) plasmas for the synthesis or modification of various nanomaterials (NMs) of exceptional properties. These articles also show the structural and morphological characterization of the synthesized NMs and their further interesting and unique applications in different areas of science and technology. The readers interested in the capabilities of plasma-based treatments will quickly be convinced that APPs and LPPs enable one to efficiently synthesize or modify differentiated NMs using a minimal number of operations. Indeed, the presented procedures are eco-friendly and usually involve single-step processes, thus considerably lowering labor investment and costs. As a result, the production of new NMs and their functionalization is more straightforward and can be carried out on a much larger scale compared to other methods and procedures involving complex chemical treatments and processes. The size and morphology, as well as the structural and optical properties of the resulting NMs are tunable and tailorable. In addition to the desirable and reproducible physical dimensions, crystallinity, functionality, and spectral properties of the resultant NMs, the NMs fabricated and/or modified with the aid of APPs are commonly ready-to-use prior to their specific applications, without any initial pre-treatments.

Book Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials

Download or read book Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials written by Miran Mozetič and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.

Book Deposition of Extremely Thin Functional Films on Nanoparticle nanotube Surfaces by a Plasma Treatment

Download or read book Deposition of Extremely Thin Functional Films on Nanoparticle nanotube Surfaces by a Plasma Treatment written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increasing need and great interest in both the fundamental science and the cutting-edge technology to modify the surfaces of nanoparticles. Such a surface modification must be done at the nanoscale in terms of structure, composition, and uniformity. The great challenge therefore lies critically on the deposition of a film on the order of a few nanometers on the surfaces of the nanoparticles. In this thesis, the uniform deposition of ultrathin polymer films of 2-10 nm on the surfaces of nanoparticles and nanotubes by plasma polymerization was demonstrated. The deposited film can also be tailored to different compositions. High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM), Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and other tests were used to confirm the polymer coating on the nanoparticle surfaces. Other tests, such as Contact Angle and ion exchange, were used to test the surface properties of the modified nanoparticles.
