Book Surface Engineering 2001 Fundamentals and Applications

Download or read book Surface Engineering 2001 Fundamentals and Applications written by Wen Jin Meng and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-27 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing a relatively new and interdisciplinary field, this book, first published in 2002, explores the linkages between surface engineering and tribology across engineering fields, from the MEMs industry to the traditional machinery industry, to the transportation industry. While the characteristic size of the respective mechanical systems varies from nano- to tens of meters, overall performance critically depends on the near-surface mechanical, thermal and tribological behavior. Advances in surface engineering technologies enable surfaces with superior wear resistance, friction behavior and corrosion characteristics, without altering the desired bulk mechanical properties. This provides opportunities to engineer next-generation mechanical systems well beyond the current performance envelope. A better understanding of the tribological behavior of engineered surfaces is the key to the future success of many new (e.g. MEMS) and old (e.g. machinery and transportation) industries. Advances on surface engineering materials, technologies and tribology are addressed in the book, as are numerical simulations and modeling related to the same issues.

Book Basics of Surface Technology

Download or read book Basics of Surface Technology written by M. Kamaraj and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on ?Basics of Surface Technology? has been written mainly for the undergraduate students of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Mechanical, Production and Maintenance Engineering in Technical universities. Many structural components and engineering machine parts lose their function and fail due to surface degradation causing shut down of the plant involving monetary loss and man hours. It is very essential to maintain the parts of the structure and machines in proper condition so that continuous production can be ensured. The engineering students should have a thorough knowledge of surface engineering and technology so that they can take preventive measures to stop or minimize the break down of the engineering components. As in many structural and production machineries iron base alloys and nickel base super alloys are used, the metallurgical background of these materials is described in the second chapter. The basics of surface degradation like wear, erosion, corrosion, oxidation, and hot corrosion are explained in the next chapter. Surface treatments to withstand aggressive environments are given in the following chapters dealing with diffusional and non-diffusional processes.Surface coatings based on chemical and electro-chemical depositions, welding and cladding are presented and discussed in detail. Advanced methods of surface treatment by thermal spraying, physical vapour deposition and chemical vapour deposition for high technological applications are explained with suitable illustrations for basic understanding of the process.Testing methods for the quality and soundness of the coated surface and the international standards are given following which the industrial applications of the surface treatment for different requirements are discussed. Finally, for the benefit of undergraduate and postgraduate students, a chapter on questions has been added which will be very useful to have a thorough understanding of the subject and solve any practical problems in surface technology.

Book Advanced Techniques for Surface Engineering

Download or read book Advanced Techniques for Surface Engineering written by W. Gissler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's shortages of resources make the search for wear and corrosion resistant materials one of the most important tasks of the next century. Since the surface of a material is the location where any interaction occurs, it is that there the hardest requirements on the material are imposed: to be wear resistant for tools and bearings; to be corrosion resistant for turbine blades and tubes in the petrochemical industry; to be antireflecting for solar cells; to be decorative for architectural panels and to combine several of these properties in other applications. Surface engineering is the general term that incorporates all the techniques by which a surface modification can be accomplished. These techniques include both coating and modification of the surface by ion implantation and laser beam melting. In recent years a continuously growing number of these techniques were developed to the extent that it became more and more difficult to maintain an overlook and to understand which of these highly differentiated techniques might be applied to resolve a given surface engineering problem. A similar development is also occuring for surface characterization techniques. This volume contains contributions from renowned scientists and engineers to the Eurocourse the aim of which was to inform about the various techniques and to give a comprehensive survey of the latest development on this subject.

This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and understandable text for users and developers of advanced engineered materials, particularly in the area of thin films, and addresses fundamentals of modifying the optical, electrical, photo-electric, triboligical, and corrosion resistance of solid surfaces and adding functionality to solids by engineering their surface, structure, and electronic, magnetic and optical structure. Thin film applications are emphasized. Through the inclusion of multiple clear examples of the technologies, how to use them, and the synthesis processes involved, the reader will gain a deep understanding of the purpose, goals, and methodology of surface engineering and engineered materials. Virtually every advance in thin film, energy, medical, tribological materials technologies has resulted from surface engineering and engineered materials. Surface engineering involves structures and compositions not found naturally in solids and is used to modify the surface properties of solids and involves application of thin film coatings, surface functionalization and activation, and plasma treatment. Engineered materials are the future of thin film technology. Engineered structures such as superlattices, nanolaminates, nanotubes, nanocomposites, smart materials, photonic bandgap materials, metamaterials, molecularly doped polymers and structured materials all have the capacity to expand and increase the functionality of thin films and coatings used in a variety of applications and provide new applications. New advanced deposition processes and hybrid processes are being used and developed to deposit advanced thin film materials and structures not possible with conventional techniques a decade ago. Properties can now be engineered into thin films that achieve performance not possible a decade ago.
