Book Atomic Force Microscopy Based Eddy Current Imaging and Characterization of Composite and Nanocomposite Materials Preprint

Download or read book Atomic Force Microscopy Based Eddy Current Imaging and Characterization of Composite and Nanocomposite Materials Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) based eddy current imaging technique has been used to characterize carbon fiber reinforced composites and carbon nanofibers nanocomposite. The surface topography and eddy current images of the same region of the sample acquired at the same time are presented. While the contrast in AFM images is due to surface topography variations, the contrast in the eddy current images is due to the local variation in the electrical conductivity of the sample. The results show that the combined techniques of AFM and eddy current imaging can be used effectively to investigate the distribution, dispersion of the carbon fibers in the polymer matrix and the fiber matrix interphase. An enhanced contrast at the interface between the fiber and the matrix has been observed in the eddy current images. The implications of the improved contrast in eddy current images and its application to investigation of fiber-matrix interface/interphase in carbon fiber polymer matrix composites is discussed.

Book excerpt: Carbon Fibers presents an up-to-date review of the progress pertaining to the formation of carbon fibers from rayon, acrylic, and pitch precursors. The book emphasizes the preparation, characterization, and properties of commercial materials. It also considers the compressive properties of carbon fibers, the lack of correlation between surface characterization and fiber-matrix interactions, and the discrepancy between surface composition as determined by XPS and the reaction of surface groups with chemical reagents. Other topics discussed include:

Book Atomic Force Microscopy Scanning Tunneling Microscopy 2

Download or read book Atomic Force Microscopy Scanning Tunneling Microscopy 2 written by Samuel H. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the compilation of papers presented at the second Atomic Force Microscopy/Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (AFM/STM) Symposium, held June 7 to 9, 1994, in Natick, Massachusetts, at Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center, now part ofU.S. Army Soldier Systems Command. As with the 1993 symposium, the 1994 symposium provided a forum where scientists with a common interest in AFM, STM, and other probe microscopies could interact with one another, exchange ideas and explore the possibilities for future collaborations and working relationships. In addition to the scheduled talks and poster sessions, there was an equipment exhibit featuring the newest state-of-the-art AFM/STM microscopes, other probe microscopes, imaging hardware and software, as well as the latest microscope-related and sample preparation accessories. These were all very favorably received by the meeting's attendees. Following opening remarks by Natick's Commander, Colonel Morris E. Price, Jr., and the Technical Director, Dr. Robert W. Lewis, the symposium began with the Keynote Address given by Dr. Michael F. Crommie from Boston University. The agenda was divided into four major sessions. The papers (and posters) presented at the symposium represented a broad spectrum of topics in atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and other probe microscopies.

Book Carbon Fibers

Book excerpt: The updated and expanded second edition of this book explores the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fibers and their composites, their manufacture and processing, and their current and emerging applications. Over 10 chapters, the book describes manufacturing methods, surface treatment, composite interfaces, and microstructure-property relationships with underlying fundamental physical and mechanical principles. It discusses the application of carbon materials in delivering improved performance across a diverse range of fields including sports, wind energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, defence, and the aerospace, automotive and semiconductor industries. This new edition introduces chapters related to the manufacturing of carbon/carbon composites (C/C composites), antioxidation characteristics of C/C composites, and their applications. Furthermore, it addresses the effect of graphene and carbon nanotubes on the physical and chemical properties of carbon fibers. A final chapter looks at the emerging and future prospects for carbon fiber technology.

Book Surface Studies of Carbon Fibers Related to Their Use in Carbon Carbon Composites

Download or read book Surface Studies of Carbon Fibers Related to Their Use in Carbon Carbon Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surface chemistry and topography of carbon fiber surfaces have been probed using a variety of surface analytical tools in order to understand the processes that effect the oxidation of carbon-carbon composites. Core and Valence Band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and other techniques were used to monitor the surface chemistry and topography of carbon fibers, with and without oxidation protective coatings. A special high vacuum apparatus was built to study surface oxidation at elevated temperatures in a chamber directly attached to a surface spectrometer. The valence band XPS spectra were interpreted by calculations that modelled the fiber surface and interfacial chemistry. The results of the project provide a better understanding of the inter facial chemistry associated with carbon fiber surface oxidation and protection. Protective films for the outer surface of the composite, and coupling agents that improve the oxidation resistance of the carbon fiber-carbon matrix interface are reported. jg p.1.

Book Surface Characterization of Carbon Fiber Polymer Composites and Aluminum Alloys After Laser Interference Structuring

Download or read book Surface Characterization of Carbon Fiber Polymer Composites and Aluminum Alloys After Laser Interference Structuring written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the increasing use of Carbon Fiber-reinforced Polymer matrix Composites (CFPC) and aluminum alloys as lightweight materials in the automotive and aerospace industries demands enhanced surface preparation and control of surface morphology prior to joining. In this study, surfaces of both composite and aluminum were prepared for joining using an Nd:YAG laser in a two-beam interference setup, enabling the (a) structuring of the AL 5182 surface, (b) removal of the resin layer on top of carbon fibers, and (c) structuring of the carbon fibers. CFPC specimens of T700S carbon fiber, Prepreg - T83 epoxy, 5 ply thick, 0/90o plaques were used. The effect of laser fluence, scanning speed, and number of shots-per-spot was investigated on the removal rate of the resin without an excessive damage of the fibers. Optical micrographs, 3D imaging, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging were used to study the effect of the laser processing on surface morphology.
