Book excerpt: Sports law has been growing rapidly over the last few years, regularly making headlines as well as leading to a developing body of law practised by specialist lawyers. This new work, by leading practitioners in the field, is the first to provide a coherent framework for understanding the law in this area, as well as a deep analysis of its key features. The subject can be split into various areas of practice. For example regulatory rules, which cover what can be described as the constitutional aspect of organised sport (this includes the enforcing of regulatory codes and the disciplinary procedures of the various sport governing organisations). Second, broadcasting and marketing which covers the revenue generated by the commercial exploitation of sports clubs, sporting events and players. This area has grown rapidly following the huge infusion of finance from television and corporate sponsorship into a growing number of sports. A third area is player representation, which focuses on the players and includes a broad range of legal issues including club transfers and player contracts (including the famous Bosman ruling), employment advice, personal injury litigation, disciplinary tribunals, discrimination law and remedies in the courts. The audience is solicitors and barristers, legal advisers to sports organisations and clubs, legal advisers to corporations and media companies, academics teaching sports law, sports administrators and law libraries.

Book excerpt: This report of the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals presents national criminal justice standards and goals for crime reduction and prevention at the State and local levels. The Commission proposes as a goal for America a 50 percent reduction in high-fear crimes by 1983. It further proposes that crime-reduction efforts focus on five crimes: homicide, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; forcible rape, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; aggravated assault, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; robbery, reduced by at least 50 percent by 1983; and burglary, reduced by at least 50 percent by 1983. The Commission proposes four areas for priority action in reducing the five target crimes: juvenile delinquency, delivery of social services, prompt determination of guilt or innocence, and citizen action. There are seven areas where the Commission proposes recommendations. In the area of criminal justice, it proposes broad reforms and improvements at the State and local levels. In focusing on community crime prevention, the Commission emphasizes communitywide crime prevention efforts at the State and local levels. The Commission also proposes that the delivery of police services be greatly improved at the municipal level and that the courts undergo a major restructuring and streamlining of procedures and practices in the processing of criminal cases at the State and local levels. Other proposals are in the broad areas of corrections and criminal code reform and revision. Regarding handguns in American society, the Commission proposes nationwide action at the State level to eliminate the dangers posed by widespread possession of handguns.

Book Kill All the Lawyers

Download or read book Kill All the Lawyers written by Daniel Kornstein and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-thirds of Shakespeare?s plays have trial scenes, and many deal specifically with lawyers, courts, judges, and points of law. Daniel Kornstein, a practicing attorney, looks at the legal issues and aspects of Shakespeare?s plays and finds fascinating parallels with many legal and social questions of the present day. The Elizabethan age was as litigious as our own, and Shakespeare was very familiar with the language and procedures of the courts. Kill All the Lawyers? examines the ways in which Shakespeare used the law for dramatic effect and incorporated the passion for justice into his great tragedies and comedies and considers the modern legal relevance of his work. ø This is a ground-breaking study in the field of literature and the law, ambitious and suggestive of the value of both our literary and our legal inheritance.
