Book RFID for the Supply Chain and Operations Professional

Download or read book RFID for the Supply Chain and Operations Professional written by Pamela Zelbst and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality and effectiveness of decisions made within an organization and its supply chain depend upon the accuracy and timeliness of the information upon which they are based. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that can provide more accurate information in near real time and thus increase the quality and timeliness of decisions based on that information. RFID systems are currently in use in areas such as inventory management, process control, asset tracking and monitoring, and retail point of sale. Organizations which appropriately incorporate RFID into their operations and information management systems have increased their agility, effectiveness, and efficiency resulting in organizational growth and increased profitability. The appropriate utilization of RFID allows organizations to become more agile resulting in their ability to respond to customers more efficiently and effectively. Technology by itself does not result in improvements and RFID is no exception. RFID is not a solution for every problem. However, when coupled with other appropriate technologies to address an appropriate objective, RFID can offer a variety of benefits to businesses. The proper integration into the firm's competitive plans and processes, and the ability to leverage those technologies for competitive advantage results in increased performance for organizations. The intent of this book is to provide a sufficient discussion of RFID to enable readers with no prior knowledge to develop a basic understanding of the technology. The book discusses current applications and specific examples of RFID usage taken from a variety of industries. The appropriate coupling of RFID with other technologies such as GPS, ERP, and robotics is discussed as well as an overview of the RFID implementation process. This book will help readers develop an understanding of the capability of the technology to increase an organization's customer responsiveness.

Book Understanding the Dynamics of the Value Chain

Download or read book Understanding the Dynamics of the Value Chain written by William D. Presutti and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1985 book, Competitive Advantage, Michael Porter introduced the concept of the value chain and described it as “a systematic way of examining all activities a firm performs and how they interact, (necessary) for analyzing the sources of competitive advantage,” and introduced the idea of “linkages,” which was the real breakthrough in management thinking. Thinking of a firm as a series of horizontal and vertical linkages put the spotlight on the silo mentality within which firms operated and how business schools structured curriculum. The silo mentality caused business students unable to see the firm as a holistic entity, an understanding of how all of its parts fit together to develop competitive advantage. Students graduating with a silo mentality perpetuated the silo mentality in business firms. This book draws together existing knowledge to help facilitate the shift of mind necessary to effectively manage the value chain, and introduces a new conception of the value chain, one that has been copyrighted (2006) and provides a new perspective of the value chain commensurate with the demands of the 21st-century global economy.

Book Supply Chain Risk Management

Download or read book Supply Chain Risk Management written by David L. Olson and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the many outcomes resulting from the explosion of international trade is access to lower cost production opportunities through outsourcing. This phenomenon has increased the importance of supply chains, the information technology needed to coordinate them and the need for this relatively complex enterprise to be exceptionally well-managed. There are obviously many cost benefits to be had from maintaining a strong and far-reaching supply chain. However, this opportunity to lower costs entails significant risks, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, political unrest, and economic turbulence. This book will introduce concepts and examples of risk in supply chain management, followed by an identification and discussion of an array of quantitative tools (selection methods, risk simulation modeling, and business scorecard analysis) to help manage these risks. Many books are appearing that address various aspects of supply chain risks. No other book known to the author addresses this set of modeling tools as a means of managing this risk.

Book Supply Chain Information Technology

Download or read book Supply Chain Information Technology written by David L. Olson and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, vertical integration was a way to gain efficiency in supply chains. Today, vertical integration doesn't work as well because specialty organizations have developed to perform specific tasks very efficiently. Efficiency through supply chains is achieved today by linking specialists throughout the vertical business hierarchy. This sort of linkage is possible because of the technology that has developed which facilitates it, making today supply chains both faster and more cost effective. Supply Chain Information Technology surveys the different systems that are used by businesses to achieve these efficiencies. The target market for this book is practitioners in the supply chain management field, one of the fastest growing fields in our economy. The rapid growth in computer technology provides supply chains with valuable tools to better coordinate and control their operations. This book describes how these systems provide supply chains with information system support. The design of these systems and the tasks they perform are demonstrated with the help of analytic techniques and models that are used in the book.

Book Sourcing to Support the Green Initiative

Download or read book Sourcing to Support the Green Initiative written by Lisa Ellram and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “green” or environmental sustainability movement has taken hold throughout the world. Its staying power is confirmed by that fact that environmental emphasis in organizations did not decrease during the recent global recession, but rather increased. However, since most organizations rely heavily on their supply base for providing components, materials, and services that become part of their final products, organizations must revisit their sourcing processes and choices to have a real impact on the environment. This book begins with an introduction to the idea of sustainability and to the concept of what it means to source to support an organization’s green initiatives, and why this is important from a holistic, lifecycle perspective. The initial chapters will also provide a point of view of how green sourcing fits into the organization’s entire portfolio of sustainability initiatives. Examples of industries and associations that lead the way in green sourcing will be presented. In addition, best practices in green sourcing will be discussed. The book also provides a perspective on how organizations can encourage and support their suppliers in pursuing green initiatives, and what types of initiatives provide a good starting point.

Book Insightful Quality

Download or read book Insightful Quality written by Victor E. Sower and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous improvement is essential but not sufficient to assure an organizations continued success. In order to be a market leader or indeed even to survive in many cases, resources must be devoted to longer-term strategic quality activities to address radical--possibly paradigm-shifting-- improvements that might affect the organization and its competitive position. These radical improvements might result from R&D efforts within the organization (proactive) that propel the organization and its products and services to the cutting edge of the markets in which they operate. Or these radical improvements might be developed by competitors or even by organizations in other industries (reactive) which, if ignored, might threaten the long-term survival of the organization if they are not recognized and reacted to in an appropriate way. This book is about how to think differently about quality and by doing so increase the creativity, innovation, and agility of an organization and its employees as well as the awareness of new developments in the marketplace and their possible impact on the organization and its markets. Quality must be addressed in strategic as well as operational terms in order for organizations to compete effectively over the long term. Strategic quality management requires insightful leadership. This book is about attaining the insight required to increase organizational creativity, innovation, and agility to create new paradigms, and survive paradigm shifts that originate outside the organization. Each chapter contains short cases illustrations about real organizations that illustrate the main points of that chapter. This book does not describe a detailed process that ostensibly leads to insight. Rather this book takes the position that what works for one organization might not work as effectively for another. It challenges leaders and managers to adopt a new way of thinking and presents thought-provoking ideas about how organizations can begin the process of charting their own paths to insight--and lasting success.

Book Ecosystem Aware Global Supply Chain Management

Download or read book Ecosystem Aware Global Supply Chain Management written by N. Viswanadham and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, several textbooks, research papers, and best practice cases have been published on supply chain management. However, globalization has created dispersed supply chains which are vulnerable and dependent on entities and factors that are exogenous to the supply chain. Resource scarcity, environmental regulations, government policies, political unrest, economic instability, and natural disasters are a few examples of how non-supply chain factors influence the way supply chains are managed. These exogenous factors are not just risk sources but can also be venues for innovation and growth. This book presents the notion of supply chain ecosystem to holistically model all the factors that interact with the supply chain and influence the flow of goods, information, and finance. Through a number of real-life case studies, the authors use the ecosystem framework to study the governance, risk, innovation, and performance issues in supply chain management, and also to redesign the management techniques for global supply chains. In doing so, this book makes a unique contribution to the theory and practice of supply chain networks.

Book Mapping Workflows and Managing Knowledge

Download or read book Mapping Workflows and Managing Knowledge written by John L. Kmetz and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book that does what the title says, and is different from most business process mapping information in three key ways. First, it lets you capture all the knowledge that goes into a workflow in any kind of organization, including the most difficult kind of all, the tacit knowledge people bring to the job and carry in their heads. Second, it is simple, powerful, flexible, and easy to learn. Finally, this book does not require installing, learning, and applying a complicated program (sometimes requiring reorganization to support the software rather than the software supporting the organization). It was developed by the author in a 15-year-long program of studying, analyzing, and improving avionics maintenance processes for the U.S. Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force, and then applied to organizations of all kinds over more than two decades. It has been taught and applied by the author and others in many short courses. In short—this book works.
