Book excerpt: Fiction. Winner of the 10th Annual Rose Metal Press Short Short Chapbook Contest, judged by Ira Sukrungruang. A concise and compelling novella-in-flash spanning decades from the 1960s to the present, Lex Williford's SUPERMAN ON THE ROOF offers an elegiac coming-of-age tale and a family portrait imbued with tragedy, guilt, grief, and forgiveness. The arguments, injustices, and triumphs of childhood echo into the adult world in unforgettable detail in these short powerful stories. This limited edition chapbook features letterpress covers and specialty endpapers. "SUPERMAN ON THE ROOF did not let me go. There is a red siren of urgency in Williford's every sentence, every word. It is a book that reiterates what Lee K. Abbott once said to me many years ago: 'Everything is the matter in the short story.' Everything is the matter in SUPERMAN ON THE ROOF. In its brevity, its pace, the contained voice of the consistent narrator, in the flashes of story about a family trying hard to find themselves after heartbreak." Ira Sukrungruang"

Superman, Batman, The X-Men, Flash, Spider Man . . . they protect us from evildoers, defend truth and justice, and, occasionally, save our planet from certain doom. Yet, how much do we understand about their powers? In this engaging yet serious work, Lois Gresh and Robert Weinberg attempt to answer that question once and for all. From X-ray vision to psychokinesis, invisibility to lightspeed locomotion, they take a hard, scientific look at the powers possessed by all of our most revered superheroes, and a few of the lesser ones, in an attempt to sort fact from fantasy. In the process, they unearth some shocking truths that will unsettle, alarm, and even terrify all but the most fiendish of supervillains.

Book Chesterton and the Romance of Orthodoxy

Download or read book Chesterton and the Romance of Orthodoxy written by William Oddie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the publication of Orthodoxy in 1908, Wilfrid Ward hailed G. K. Chesterton as a prophetic figure whose thought was to be classed with that Burke, Butler, Coleridge, and John Henry Newman. When Chesterton died in 1936, T. S. Eliot pronounced that 'Chesterton's social and economic ideas were the ideas for his time that were fundamentally Christian and Catholic'. But how did he come by these ideas? Eliot noted that he attached 'significance also to his development, to his beginnings as well as to his ends, and to the movement from one to the other'. It is on that development that this book is focused. Chesterton and the Romance of Orthodoxy is an exploration of G.K. Chesterton's imaginative and spiritual development, from his early childhood in the 1870s to his intellectual maturity in the first decade of the twentieth century. William Oddie draws extensively on Chesterton's unpublished letters and notebooks, his journalism, and his early classic writings, to reveal the writer in his own words. In the first major study of Chesterton to draw on this source material, Oddie charts the progression of Chesterton's ideas from his first story (composed at the age of three and dictated to his aunt Rose) to his apologetic masterpiece Orthodoxy, in which he openly established the intellectual foundations on which the prolific writing of his last three decades would build. Part One explores the years of Chesterton's obscurity; his childhood, his adolescence, his years as a student and a young adult. Part Two examines Chesterton's emergence on to the public stage, his success as one of the leading journalists of his day, and his growing renown as a man of letters. Written to engage all with an interest in Chesterton's life and times, Oddie's accessible style ably conveys the warmth and subtlety of thought that delighted the first readership of the enigmatic GKC.

Book Divine Intervention Why Me

Download or read book Divine Intervention Why Me written by Vincenzo Esposito and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a youth, I attended Catholic schools and churches. At one time, I was an altar boy. I've always been a true believer of the Lord and the saints along with heaven's angels. While in the military, I attended mass most of my time in the air force. I also spent some time at the Mormon church more or less to understand the difference in religions. My wife and I were married in a protestant church. Our children were all Catholics before they changed over to other religions. In my lifetime, I came close to dying, or getting killed, about nine or ten times. I gave credit to my guardian angel each time. When I was assigned to New York University Medical and saw children suffering and or dying of cancer, I prayed to the Lord and asked for the power to save these children. I believe my prayers were answered during the time when I found out I had cancer. I did some heavy research and found a product that helped save my life, and others I shared it with also got positive results. Today, that product is used not as a business, but as my mission. The results were so good that I shared it with many seniors, adults, young people, and children. I spent ten years as a Korean War veteran, twenty-nine years in law enforcement, and fifteen years in between working with youth as their executive director of a 501(c)(3) refusing any salary. The name of the organization was Youth Against Crime, Inc. I have been directed in my life by a greater power who has brought to me a loving family, loving friends, a fantastic and exciting life, and love of country. I wouldn't be where I am today without the trials and tribulations God has bestowed on me.
