Download or read book Moments in Time written by Jim Davidson and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcards provide a much richer source of imagery than most of us ever imagined. An extraordinary range has been printed in Australia, particularly in the golden period between 1900 and the First World War. After an introduction to set the scene, Moments in Time covers postcards of just about everything - war and peace, disasters and celebrations, holidays and home life, sports and theatre, rural and city living, love for 'The Dear Old Country' and pride in Australia - to name a few. Postcards were a major form of communication for a century. Although few people send them now, old postcards have an immediacy about them that is striking. They become projectiles for the past, particularly when augmented by a message that gives a glimpse of another life, another time.

Book excerpt: In Gideon Haigh's latest book, one of cricket's finest writers turns his subject Inside Out, examining those aspects of cricket that distinguish it from other games, from the centenary of Sir Donald Bradman and the cult of the baggy green cap to the threat and promise of the Twenty20 revolution. This is cricket not only as it is played, but as it is seen, run, commercialised, codified, promoted, politicised and also written about by others, with a detailed introduction to the distinguished literary traditions of which Gideon Haigh now forms part.
Download or read book Just a Man Called Phonse written by Des Tobin and published by Killaghy Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Phonse Tobin was anything but ordinary. Born in 1905, he followed on behind soldiers as they marched to the wharves to depart for WW1. He earned pocket money by trapping rats and collecting the South Melbourne Council's rat bounty, and almost 'haunted' the Collins Street movie and live theatres. After leaving school in 1919 he worked as a storeman, salesman, soldier and fireman. In 1934 Phonse and his brothers Leo, Tom and Kevin started what has become Australia's most successful family-owned funeral service company. A natural entertainer, Phonse possessed a fine singing voice and produced many amateur theatrical productions in the 1930s. He was a good all-round sportsman and a successful professional footrunner. He was a long-serving member of the North Melbourne Football Club committee and was the club’s president from 1955 to 1957. He was a life member of both the NMFC and the VFL (now AFL). Phonse married Vera Crough in 1935. They had four children and their direct descendants number 38. Phonse was one of those rare characters who could meet, communicate and be at ease with people of all classes and walks of life - from prize fighters to prime ministers, from 'mug' punters to wealthy publicans or bookmakers, from Knights of the Southern Cross to knights of the realm, from everyday parish priests to 'princes' of the church, and from grave diggers to governors. Like everyone else, he had his failings. But these failings – such as they were – were more than offset by his strength of character, generous spirit, creative flair, kindness to people in need, and his love for and undying support of his family.

Download or read book Great Disasters in Australian History written by Jonathan King and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From cyclones to sinking ships, from mine explosions to train crashes, faulty planes and bridge collapses, from the shooting in Port Arthur to the Bali bombing, from floods in the north to bushfires in the south, Australia has not been immune to the fickle finger of fate...No one expects cataclysmic events, but when disaster strikes, life changes in an instant: priorities shift, and often, life is reduced to blood, bone and memory...Historian Jonathan King has meticulously recounted the anatomy of twenty-three Australian disasters, showing us the events and conditions that conspired to their happening. More importantly, he draws out the stories of those Australians whose lives were irrevocably changed, and myriad stories of heroism and bravery...Many of the disasters in this book were caused by human error or negligence. Dreadful as they are, most have led to constructive outcomes, such as tighter gun controls in Australia in the aftermath of the Port Arthur shooting; stricter regulations for air, sea and rail transportation; and safer conditions for all workers...Humane and moving, Great Disasters in Australian History brings forth the everyday dimensions of a disaster to allow us to understand and empathise with the victims and survivors. The book is a small step to helping us remember how much things have changed - and how much we must remain vigilant so that we are not condemned to repeat past mistakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of how Britain’s railway disasters, horrific though they may be, change the network for the better through the crucial lessons that are learned. It starts with fatalities on early mining tramways before the dawn of the steam age and takes the story up to the present day. While many of Britain’s worst tragedies are covered in depth, such as Quintinshill in 1915 and Harrow & Wealdstone in 1952, the book also looks at others that had resounding consequences for safety.
