Book excerpt: The line between love and disdain is so thin that crossing it is easy—and potentially devastating… Lucy Woodley is ready for a new challenge. Lately, everything—including her job at a local farm—has started feeling too routine. But then a stubborn, focused, and entirely too handsome hedge fund manager shows up and gives her more of a challenge than she ever could’ve bargained for. Rob Coolidge has no interest in small town living. He’s here to make money and earn a promotion—even if he has to destroy a family farm to do it. Business always comes first. But the more time he spends with the tenacious, loyal, and distractingly lovely Lucy, the less appealing his business becomes… He’s on a mission. She’ll do anything to stop him. The battle for Orcas Island is on. But when all is said and done, will Rob decide that winning Lucy’s heart is the only victory worth celebrating? Or will these polar opposites lose their only shot at happily ever after? Book Sea Levels Land Levels and Tide Gauges

Download or read book Sea Levels Land Levels and Tide Gauges written by K.O. Emery and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in sea level caused by global warming can be disastrous to modern civilization. Therefore, it is important to use accurate and reliable methods to monitor any change. During this century, and, in particular, the last three decades, tide-gauge records have been used to show these changes related to the world's oceans. Aubrey and Emery suggest, however, that tidal gauges should not be used unquestioningly as a benchmark for measuring eustatic sea-level changes. Tectonism, subsidence, ocean current variability, and human activity can, and do, affect the accuracy of these records. Understanding the reasons for changes in land and sea levels is essential for the proper development of coastal regions. The results of this study provide guiding data for scientific, engineering, and policy solutions to coastal flooding. Determining the true causes of relative subsidence, and how to use geological and oceanological controls, will allow us to exist within our natural environment, rather than force nature to conform to our legal and temporary 'remedies.'

  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press

  • ISBN : 0853236933

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the patristic age until the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, computus -- the science of time reckoning and art of calendar construction -- was a matter of intense concern. Bede's The Reckoning of Time (De temporum ratione) was the first comprehensive treatise on this subject and the model and reference for all subsequent teaching discussion and criticism of the Christian calendar. It is a systematic exposition of the Julian solar calendar and the Paschal table of Dionysius Exiguus, with their related formulae for calculating dates. But it is more than a technical handbook. Bede sets calendar lore within a broad scientific framework and a coherent Christian concept of time, and incorporates themes as diverse as the theory of tides and the doctrine of the millennium. This translation of the full text of The Reckoning of Time includes an extensive historical introduction and a chapter-by-chapter commentary. It will interest historians of medieval science, theology, and education, Bede scholars and Anglo-Saxonists, liturgists, and Church historians. It will also serve as an accessible introduction to computus itself. Generations of medieval computists nourished their expertise in Bede's orderly presentation; modern scholars in quest of safe passage through this complex terrain can hope for no better guide.
