Book Sunscreen Photobiology Molecular Cellular and Physiological Aspects

Download or read book Sunscreen Photobiology Molecular Cellular and Physiological Aspects written by Francis P. Gasparro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunscreens are universally recommended by dermatologists not only to prevent the immediate effects of overexposure to sunlight but also to prevent skin cancer. While the former goal is immediately evident, the latter remains an unproven hypothesis and is a topic of some controversy. Recent epidemiological studies suggesting a correlation between increased use of sunscreens over the past two decades and the rise in skin cancer have led to the question whether sunscreens applied to skin may be undergoing photoreactions, the effects of which are elaborated many years later. By addressing the key questions, this book advances the field of sunscreen photobiology and provides the reader with an unbiased perspective on this important field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not always the case that the subject of a scientific book and its relevance to everyday li fe are so timely. Photobiology and its si ster subject Radiobiology are now a must for understanding the environment we live in and the impact light, ultraviolet light, and radiation have on all aspects of our life. Photobiology is a true interdisciplinary field. Photobiology research plays a direct role in diverse fields, and a glance at the topics of the symposia covered in this book by over 100 articles shows the breadth and depth of knowledge acquired in fundamental research and its impact on the major issues and applied problems the world is facing. Half a century of photobiology research brought about an understanding of the importance of light to life, both as a necessary source of energy and growth as weIl as its possible dangers. Research in photochemistry and photobiology led to the discoveries of ceIlular repair mechanisms of UV induced damages to DNA and this led to understanding of the effects of hazardous environmental chemieals and mutagenecity , and to the development of genetic engineering. This topic was given due emphasis in several symposia and chapters in this book.

Download or read book Life Under the Sun written by Peter A. Ensminger and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which fungus is as sensitive to light as the human eye? What are the myths and facts about the ozone hole, tanning, skin cancer, and sunscreens? What is the effect of light on butterfly copulation? This entertaining collection of essays explores how various organisms -- including archaebacteria, slime molds, fungi, plants, insects, and humans -- sense and respond to sunlight. The essays in Peter A. Ensminger's book cover vision, photosynthesis, and phototropism, as well as such unusual topics as the reason why light causes beer to develop a "skunky" odor. He introducec us to the kinds of eyes that have evolved in different animals, including those in a species of shrimp that is ostensibly eyeless; gives us a better appreciation of color vision; explains how plowing fields at night may be used to control weeds; and tells about variegate porphyria, a metabolic disease that makes people very sensitive to sunlight and may have afflicted King George III of England. These engaging essays present a complicated yet fascinating subject in an accessible way. The book will be treasured by anyone interested in the wonders of biology.

Book Percutaneous Absorption of UV Filters Contained in Sunscreen Cosmetic Products

Download or read book Percutaneous Absorption of UV Filters Contained in Sunscreen Cosmetic Products written by Zacarías León González and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zacarías León's thesis describes the development and validation of analytical methods to estimate the processes set in motion by percutaneous absorption of UV filters in sunscreen cosmetic products. León describes these methods in both in vitro and non-invasive in vivo methodologies. Currently dermatologists recommend the use of sunscreen products not only under conditions of extreme exposure to the sun but also in daily situations. However the chemical compounds in these products contain may lead to undesired processes and cause induced toxicity, estrogenic effects and endocrine activity. León establishes methods to investigate these effects and provides valuable information on the undesired side effects associated with the use of UV filters found in sunscreen products. The work in this thesis has led to a number of publications in renowned analytical chemistry journals.

Book excerpt: Molecular Photobiology: Inactivation and Recovery describes the deleterious photochemical reactions occurring in biological systems. This book is composed of 10 chapters that specifically tackle light interactions in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum resulting to damaged proteins and nucleic acids in living systems. This book deals first with the kinds of photochemical reactions that can occur and the possible effects of photochemistry on molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. The succeeding chapters highlight the principle of recovery mechanisms, wherein evidence shows that cells can repair their damaged genetic material, and thus recover from the otherwise inactivating effects of light. The remaining chapters are devoted to the comparison and contrast of some biological effects of ionizing radiation and those of ultraviolet radiation. This book is of value to molecular photobiologists, photochemists, biochemists, and radiation scientists and researchers.

Book excerpt: "Sun Protection in Man" looks at the beneficial and harmful effects of solar radiation. The physiological consequences of sun exposure have been systematically studied starting at the end of the nineteenth century and we now have accumulated knowledge about how Caucasian and Asian skins reacts to solar radiation. The chemical effects of solar ultraviolet radiation have been analyzed with particular emphasis during the second half of the twentieth century. Research on micro-organisms has allowed us to understand the mechanisms of UV-induced mutagenesis and photosensitization. Studies with laboratory rodents have opened the path to the understanding of UV-induced immune-depression, carcinogenesis, photo-damage and photo-aging. The results of these studies have enabled other scientists to investigate the same phenomena in human organs such as the skin and the eye. UV radiation damages hair, as well. The present knowledge in these fields is summarized in some of the chapters of this monograph.Mass phenomenon in Europe with the generalization of summer vacations which were a consequence of social reforms introducing the concept of "paid vacations". This created a need for protection and opened a market for sunscreens. This monograph is concerned with sun protection as a whole and is not just "another book on sunscreens". Nonetheless, in these days of general concern, it is important to learn about the efficiency of sunscreens. Several authors discuss how to reduce the number of impinging photons and explain why sunscreens seem to offer less protection than expected. Guidelines are given on how to use sunscreens in everyday life, which are expressed rigorously though clearly, for access to the common reader. Our knowledge on the relationship between sun and humans is at the early stages of development. Industrial and commercial activities are concerned by the development of this knowledge, and rules have been and will be promulgated to guarantee efficacy and safety of sun-products. It is hoped that this monograph will be of interest to the scholar, the layman and the legislator.

Book Impacts of Organic and Inorganic Sunscreen Active Ingredients on the Photobiology of Sea Anemone Anthopleura Elegantissima

Download or read book Impacts of Organic and Inorganic Sunscreen Active Ingredients on the Photobiology of Sea Anemone Anthopleura Elegantissima written by Alana Rosen and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunscreen products contain chemicals such as oxybenzone or minerals such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO), which are a threat to marine biota and especially to coral reefs. Mineral sunscreens are being marketed as "reef-safe"; however, their impacts on marine organisms are not well understood. The aim of my thesis was to evaluate the effects of oxybenzone, TiO2, and ZnO on photophysiological properties of sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima. This invertebrate belongs to the phylum Cnidaria and is a close relative to reef-building corals. Anemones were exposed to three environmentally relevant concentrations of oxybenzone, TiO2, and ZnO (nominally, 0.01 microgram/L, 0.1 microgram/L, and 1 microgram/L) for 21 days, followed by seven days of recovery in the absence of sunscreen ingredients. Throughout this 28-day period, measurements of fluorescence intensity and photosynthetic efficiency were taken as proxies for anemone photophysiology. The sunscreen ingredients did not seem to affect either parameter over the course of the experiment. However, analyses of seawater samples using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed prominent mismatches in the concentrations of TiO2 and ZnO compared to the target values, including much higher concentrations in the controls than in treatment samples. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis failed to detect oxybenzone. Overall, the unexpectedly high TiO2 and ZnO concentrations measured in the experimental aquarium coupled with oxybenzone analysis issues prevented reaching conclusions about their potential toxicity on anemone photophysiology. These factors must be considered for future studies aiming to assess potential toxic effects of sunscreen compounds on marine life.

Book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews

Download or read book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews written by Kendric Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stone carving from the 14th century B.C. records that the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten (born Amenhoteph IV) and his wife, Nefertiti, recognized the importance of sunlight to life. In fact, Akhenaten initiated a monotheistic religion, with Aton, the sun, as God. One of his daughters be came the wife of King Tut Ankamon, the spelling of whose name indicates a return to the old religion and an eclipse of interest in photobiology among the pharaohs. A renewal of interest in photobiology in modern times was climaxed in 1928 by the establishment of an international organization for photobiology under the title Comite International de la Lumiere (C.I.L.). Its present title, Comite International de Photobiologie (C.I.P.), was adopted at a meeting in Paris in 1951. The first of a series of international congresses on photobiology was held in 1954 and probably represents the beginning of modern day photobiology. Medical men were prominent in the activities of the old C.I.L., for the importance of natural sunlight in human health and disease was obvious though not well understood. The bringing together of physicians with physicists, chemists, and biologists from the pure and applied branches of their subjects was the aim of the older C.I.L. and continues to the present day through the C.I.P.

Book excerpt: The adverse effects of sunlight on the skin are well known, but only now is the scientific basis and rationale for treatment being evaluated. With the current level of interest from the general public and dermatologists in suntanning, sunburn and skin cancer, there is a great need for an authoritative, comprehensive review of the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of photodamage. There are only a handful of reputable clinical investigators who could put together an important volume and of this group, Dr. Gilchrest is probably the leading worker. She has collected all the latest information on photobiology, the effect of light on skin structure and function, clinical problems, prevention in adults and children, and medical and surgical treatment

Download or read book Research in Photobiology written by A. Castellani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every four years the photobio1ogists of the world get together in an International Congress. They discuss and learn not only re search details and findings in their own, often narrow, fields but educate one another broadly in the many biological systems that interact with light. It is this latter purpose that is exemplified by these proceedings - the Symposium papers and Workshop summaries of the VIIth International Congress on Photobiology held in Rome, August 29 - September 3, 1976. Photobiology is one of the few true interdisciplinary fields. It has an air of excitement about it. A glance at the table of contents indicates clearly that photobiology and its practitioners (individuals whose primary interests are in medicine, plant sci ences, animal sciences, molecular properties, and energy conversion) interact with the entire and diverse world of living creatures. We supply not only the basic research background to help evaluate many present-day environmental problems but are also evaluating and pointing the way toward solutions to a number of these problems.
