Book 27

    27

    Book Details:
  • Author : Howard Sounes
  • Publisher : Da Capo Press
  • Release : 2013-11-12
  • ISBN : 0306821699
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book 27 written by Howard Sounes and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home in 2011, the press inducted her into what Kurt Cobain's mother named the 27 Club. “Now he's gone and joined that stupid club,” she said in 1994, after being told that her son, the front man of Nirvana, had committed suicide. “I told him not to….” Kurt's mom was referring to the extraordinary roll call of iconic stars who died at the same young age. The Big Six are Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison of the Doors, Kurt Cobain and, now, Amy Winehouse. All were talented. All were dissipated. All were 27. Journalists write about “the curse of the 27 Club” as if there is a supernatural reason for this series of deaths. Others invoke astrology, numerology, and conspiracy theories to explain what has become a modern mystery. In this haunting book, author Howard Sounes conducts the definitive forensic investigation into the lives and deaths of the six most iconic members of the Club, plus another forty-four music industry figures who died at 27, to discover what, apart from coincidence, this phenomenon signifies. In a grimly fascinating journey through the dark side of the music business over six decades, Sounes uncovers a common story of excess, madness, and self-destruction. The fantasies, half-truths, and mythologies that have become associated with Jones, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, and Winehouse are debunked. Instead a clear and compelling narrative emerges, one based on hard facts, that unites these lost souls in both life and death.

Book The Ends Game

Download or read book The Ends Game written by Marco Bertini and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How companies like Dollar Shave Club and Rent the Runway rewrite the rules of commerce by pursuing outcomes rather than products and services. The seventh book in the Management on the Cutting Edge series—for business professionals looking to do deliver excellent customer service while maximizing value and revenue. Would you rather pay for healthcare or for better health? For school or education? For groceries or nutrition? A car or transportation? A theater performance or entertainment? In The Ends Game, Marco Bertini and Oded Koenigsberg describe how some firms are rewriting the rules of commerce: instead of selling the “means” (their products and services), they adopt innovative revenue models to pursue “ends” (actual outcomes). They examine companies such as: • Dollar Shave Club • Rent the Runway • Netflix • Spotify • Michelin • Adobe • Pearson • And many more! They show that paying by the pill, semester, food item, vehicle, or show does not necessarily reflect the value that customers actually derive from their purchases. Revenue models anchored on the ownership of products, they argue, are patently inferior.

Book From My Heart

  • Author : Sue k Green
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-03-13
  • ISBN : 1493116460
  • Pages : 46 pages

Download or read book From My Heart written by Sue k Green and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing becomes part of the healing process. From the Heart shares with you the emotional road traveled by the author as she came to terms with her new role. She writes, I am a wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoys an active lifestlye. I became interested in photography as an attempt to capture those precious moments in time that only another new grandparent could truly understand. That was twenty years ago. Now, as a senior, and caregiver to my husband who is recovering from a stroke he suffered almost a year ago, those precious moments seem so all important to remember. I began to write verse, as a means of expression, after the attacks of 9/11. I have never been one to overtly show my emotions; but as I travel this new emotional roller coaster, I have learned that emotions are just a part of each of us, they need not be justified and it helps when I share. Photography and writing have been my voice of expression. I would urge all to look beyond my words and images and find their own story. Appreciation and Interpretation take root from past experiences, present circumstances, and current frame of mind. If we are to stay well and be successful, it is essential that we learn to accept, understand, and come to terms with our own emotions. I believe that how we react to something is much more important than the event itself. I do hope that my work offers support and comfort to others.
