Book Sun Yat Sen Nanyang and the 1911 Revolution

Download or read book Sun Yat Sen Nanyang and the 1911 Revolution written by Lee Lai To and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution and Sun Yat-sen's relations with the Nanyang communities, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and the Chinese Heritage Centre came together to host a two-day bilingual conference on the three-way relationships between Sun Yat-sen, Nanyang and the 1911 Revolution in October 2010 in Singapore. This volume is a collection of papers in English presented at the conference. While there are extensive research and voluminous publications on Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Revolution, it was felt that less had been done on the Southeast Asian connections. Thus this volume tries to chip in some original and at times provocative analysis on not only Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Revolution but also contributions from selected Southeast Asian countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a single day revealed the history and foreshadowed the future of Shanghai. It is November 12, 1941, and the world is at war. In Shanghai, just weeks before Pearl Harbor, thousands celebrate the birthday of China’s founding father, Sun Yat-sen, in a new city center built to challenge European imperialism. Across town, crowds of Shanghai residents from all walks of life attend the funeral of China’s wealthiest woman, the Chinese-French widow of a Baghdadi Jewish businessman whose death was symbolic of the passing of a generation that had seen Shanghai’s rise to global prominence. But it is the racetrack that attracts the largest crowd of all. At the center of the International Settlement, the heart of Western colonization—but also of Chinese progressivism, art, commerce, cosmopolitanism, and celebrity—Champions Day unfolds, drawing tens of thousands of Chinese spectators and Europeans alike to bet on the horses. In a sharp and lively snapshot of the day’s events, James Carter recaptures the complex history of Old Shanghai. Champions Day is a kaleidoscopic portrait of city poised for revolution.

Book A BIOGRAPHY OF SUN YAT SEN

Download or read book A BIOGRAPHY OF SUN YAT SEN written by Zhang Lei and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Biography of Sun Yat-Sen, a record of the renowned historical personage in China, co-authored by Zhang Lei and Zhang Ping and published in 2011 by the People’s Publishing House, was listed as one of the key publications for the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Sun Yat-sen. It has been highly regarded in the major media of the country. The book is composed of two parts, the first of which consists of five chapters that narrate his experience of overseas studies and his leadership in the establishment of the Revive China Society and the Chinese Revolutionary League, the struggle against the Qing Dynasty and Yuan Shikai, the building and protection of the Republican system. The second part of the book provides a detailed description and interpretation of the development of the democratic and revolutionary system of ideology represented by the Three Principles of the People and the Three Great Policies, and of the significance of his theories for the Chinese revolution. Different from other biographies, A Biography of Sun Yat-sen does not dwell on telling the long story about his family or daily life, but is focused on his spirit, i.e. his patriotism and enthusiasm for reform and revolution, and based on it, recounts the development and elevation of this spirit, which is revealed by the whole process of his first advocating the reform of the Qing Government to proposing the (New) Three Principles of the People. The book is an important reference for further study and understanding of Sun Yat-sen and his ideas and revolutionary cause.

Book Prescriptions for Saving China

Download or read book Prescriptions for Saving China written by Yat-sen Sun and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, more than forty selected writings of Sun Yat-sen, the father of the Republic of China, have been collected and translated into English. The writings, which span his entire political career (from 1894 to 1924), are accompanied by explanatory notes and an introduction that discusses the historical context and significance of Sun Yat-sen's thought. Sun Yat-sen is still revered in both the Republic of China on Taiwan and the People's Republic of China. The living legacy of Sun's thought is evident on Taiwan, where since 1949 the Kuomintang (KMT) party has applied his principles to create a modern Chinese society and, in the process, forged an economic and political miracle based on pluralistic marketplaces. On mainland China, Sun is recognized as a leader of early twentieth-century China whose ideas were a catalyst for revolutionary action. The collection begins with Sun's famous letter to Viceroy Li Hung-chang in 1894 (instructing him in how to reform China) and concludes with his farewell address to the graduating class of the Whampoa Military Academy in Canton in 1924, one year before his death (the speech argues that KMT members should submit to party discipline). The lectures, speeches, and essays cover the breadth and span of Sun's vision for a strong modern China and trace the refinements in the cornerstone of his doctrine, the Three Principles of the People. The Three Principles of the People were first conceived in 1906 as the guiding precepts for Sun's revolutionary organization. The Principle of Nationalism addressed the problem of foreign domination and the restoration of national sovereignty; the Principle of Democracy was a plan for empowering the people togovern themselves; and the Principle of the People's Livelihood dealt with economic reforms for free markets that would distribute income equitably. As evidenced in Sun's writings, his expression of these principles significantly changed over the years as he considered Western concepts and contemporary influences and movements, including the socialist revolution in Russia. He tried to fit those new ideas into a framework that did not ignore traditional Chinese ideals and values derived from Confucianism. Sun Yat-sen last enunciated his principles in 1923 in a series of lectures in Canton. The expression of his ideas had an added dimension that dealt with practical applicability, moving from the definition of philosophical and political ends to revised means for achieving those ends. For instance, he modified his Principle of Democracy, insisting that a period of political tutelage, with authoritarian one-party rule, was necessary before China could achieve representative government. This first-rate translation of Sun's important speeches and documents allows Western audiences to savor his unique, idiomatic style and trace the evolution of his ideas as he grappled with the tensions in the path toward China's salvation. It is a measure of Sun's prescience that his ideas are as relevant and resonant today as they were at the beginning of the century.

Book Sun Yat Sen and the Origins of the Chinese Revolution

Download or read book Sun Yat Sen and the Origins of the Chinese Revolution written by Harold Schiffrin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enigmatic personal qualities that marked Sun Yat-sen during his lifetime have encouraged controversy concerning him ever since his death more than a generation ago. Mr. Schiffrin's book deals with the first forty years of Sun's life, and attempts to find the key to this controversial personality. His study is at once biography and history, for it goes beyond Sun to the whole texture of Chinese history of Sun's time. Drawing on diplomatic archives, police reports, personal interviews, contemporary newspapers, and other hitherto unused sources in Chinese, Japanese, and Western languages, the author reveals unsuspected facets of Sun's versatile plotting on three continents, and traces the convolutions of his pragmatic style in unprecedented detail.
